The Bride of Frankenstein
A horror film is a film dominated by elements of horror. This film
genre underestimates a number of sub-genres and repeated themes, such
as slashed themes, vampire. Horror films are designed to frighten and
panic that cause dread and alarm within our hearts, and to invoke our
hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying and shocking endings at the
same time entertaining us with excitement and therapeutic experience.
Most horror films are designed to show the dark side of life, the
forbidden and strange events that take place within the society and
our lives. Moreover they deal with our most primal nature and its
fears: our nightmares. Some horror films exhibit a substantial amount
of cross-over with other genres, particularly science fiction when the
monster or creature is related to a corruption of technology, or when
Earth is threatened by aliens.
Horror films are familiar with their own styles and their own special
effects, such as the gothic style which set in spooky old mansions,
castles, or fogy and dark shadowy areas. We can relate horror movies
to German expressionists which were the silent films in black and
white. The German expressionists film were highly stylized type of
film with different styles of oblique camera angels, distorted bodies
and shape that matched the incongruous settings that gave the gothic
effects.
The film The Bride of Frankenstein which was directed by the
Englishhorror masters James Whale in 1935, the film was one of the
best and most successful sequels ever made within the horror genre.

In conclusion the film itself can easily be identified as a classic
horror film. This is because of the use of oblique camera angels and
the use of dark lightening and shadows within the film. The film also
contains violence and science fiction which most horror movies relate
to as the monster or creature is the cause this force or experiment.
The ending of the film is very interesting it is not a typical
Hollywood ending as the bride refuses to get with the monster. This
leads him to commit suicide and kills himself and the bride with his
and her creator. However there are other elements of other genres as
Henry and Elizabeth finally are reunited together; this showed the
other side of the film as it contained romance.
Scary films were popular during this time period because the people watching were extremely scared from the images in the films. "When people are down, they're almost eager to focus on something worse than what they're going through themselves," Edgar Allan Poe asserted, "they walk out and think, 'Maybe I'm out of work. But at least I'm not being killed by Frankenstein’” (Beckerman). At the time of the Great Depression, audiences were experiencing great economic hardship, forcing change in social attitudes toward race, gender, and sexuality. In most novel and movies monsters are known to be evil, committing numerous crimes against humanity and are normally the ones that we don’t sympathize with. However, this novel carefully shows the reader that monsters can be good creatures, with a decent heart and act based on the actions of others. The novel shows how the monster should be pitied, rather than criticised. Mary Shelley's “Frankenstein” manages to create sympathy for the creature through speech, actions and mistreatment the creature suffers.
Young Frankenstein has important visual effects that bring to this film a well-rounded sense of both frivolity and campy thrill. Satirically embodying the older films, Young Frankenstein includes overly dramatic scene transitions such as iris outs, wipes, and “fading to black”, like all classic Hollywood horror films. In classic Hollywood horror, there are lightening flashes, villagers carrying torches and monsters moving in slow motion. The black and white filming technique of Young Frankenstein is one of the most essential elements to creating the film's vintage horror mise-en-scene, providing an air of authenticity to connecting this film to the earlier Frankenstein movies. James Whale and the many adapters/screenwriters involved in both films leeched onto the inhumanity of the monster and the terror he could create. Victor Frankenstein, a character in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, decided that he wanted to bring life into this world; a life that would eventually go on to killing the creator himself. The Creature can be seen as either innocent or guilty. The popular opinion of the Creature seems to be that he is guilty considering how he has burned down a house, set up Justine for murder and murdered three others. However, after taking a close look at the text, it can be seen that Frankenstein’s creature is not guilty. He was brought into this world with a child-like innocence, never progressed past the emotional state of a child and was rejected throughout his whole life causing him to do the things he did.
Compare and Contrast the episodes of the creation of the monster and the creation of the second monster in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein Mary Shelley finished her first edition of 'Frankenstein' in 1816, when she was nineteen years old. Since then her "monster" has become so popular in the twenty-first century that he appears in films, advertisements, comics and even computer games. So how is it that as such a young age she was able to write such a gripping novel, which has become more famous than any other work of 'Romantic' literature, and indeed, her own? It could have been a result of an intellectually stimulating childhood due to having free access to her fathers extensive library and literary connections; or it could have been a result of her being emotionally undernourished as a child. Whichever way, she has succeeded in writing a novel that 'speaks to the mysterious fears of our nature and awaken thrilling horror' (p.8 - author's introduction), as she wanted; and she has included many personal ideas about politics and familial relations as well as moral, philosophical and scientific ideas on the creation and 'elixir of life' (p.42).
The most recent film which reflects the novel, was directed by Kenneth Branagh in 1994, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The character remains one of most recognized icons in horror fiction today. Written almost 200 years ago about a man obsessed with creating artificial life continues to be a topic in the 21st century. Such as today’s controversy in stem cell research or human cloning which reflects the basic theme of Mary Shelley’s novel.
Many people consider The Bride of Frankenstein to be better than the original Frankenstein. This is because the sequel to Frankenstein had a musical score whereas the original Frankenstein never had one. The fact that the original lacked background music and the sequel had a wonderful music score is the biggest difference between the two movies when it came to sound. In The Bride of Frankenstein, music was used as a way of hinting things to the audience. Music would become faster and louder right before something big was about to happen and it would slow down and sound sweet in parts that were supposed to show the good, gentle side of the monster. The music also filled space in between scenes and made the film flow better.
This is an ironic and unfortunate example of a film that would have really been considered a lot better than it is if it were not for the book upon which it is based. It is clear that the film is strong and that it is well made, but when compared to Shelley's novel, it's really a pretty sad mess. The film by itself is more than able to captivate and impress, but to someone who knows the original story, it is a weak attempt to bring the story of Frankenstein and his monster to the big screen.

If a human like creation could potentially become a monster, anyone is capable of becoming a monster. In Frankenstein, 1818, Shelley is not afraid to reveal the “deterioration of [this] world”(Vore, Domenic, Kwan, Reidy 1). It’s easier for the audience to see the audience to recognize the monster as another creature, rather than a human being. If the monster were to be human, as described by Shelley in her novel, it would not appeal to the audience – causing them to sympathize or fear humanity. Therefore in the production of Frankenstein, 1931, in order to captivate his audience, Whale had to create a monster, vaguely resembling Shelley’s creation.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley became widely known as one of the best horror novels of her time and the basis for films that branched out of Shelley’s novel. Frankenstein was heavily inspired by the Industrial Revolution and the Romanticism. Therefore, Frankenstein’s monster appears to be Shelley’s representation of the Industrial Revolution and the society’s fears and anxieties regarding the rapid growth of science and technology.
Frankenstien Many punishments for crimes are often given to innocent people. In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, there are several instances in which the punishment is given to an innocent person. Justine, a maid at the Frankenstein residence, was killed for a crime she did not commit. Felix, a character the Monster encounters, was exiled from his country, for helping an innocent man escape from jail. Lastly, Victor himself was jailed for a murder, which he did not commit.
Evil features in both ‘Dracula’ and ‘Frankenstein’ but the personification of this evil is different in both novels. A feeling of menace and doom pervades ‘Dracula’ because of his supernatural powers. One feels that he has control of the evil and he has the power to manipulate the environment and people for his own ends. ‘Frankenstein’ centres on the creation of a monster made from parts of dead bodies and the fear created by the monster due to circumstance and the ignorance of society. Also, one feels a certain amount of apprehension that the monster is deserted by his creator and loses control without his support and guidance.
