They are machines, nothing else. All throughout Human’s history, we have been fighting each other physically, artistically, and mentally. Those traits mark the difference in our cultures, thus creating various individual groups. Within a group, there are also varies individual people. Human being are an amazing creature, generally we are not fully mature until past the years 20. Yet many groups in the world mature as young as 14 years old. Often in this world, the olds are praised of their wrinkle and age. Those traits mark their success in life and hardship. Whereas in The Brave New World, many of these trait that mark us as human are destroyed. The work of Shakespeare burned, arts work destroyed, and the last generation killed. When the controllers declared they created stability, in truth they created machines.

People all around agree that technology is changing how we think, but is it changing us for the better? Clive Thompson definitely thinks so and this book is his collection of why that is. As an avid fiction reader I wasn’t sure this book would captivate me, but the 352 pages seemingly flew past me. The book is a whirlwind of interesting ideas, captivating people, and fascinating thoughts on how technology is changing how we work and think.
Wells’ The Island of Doctor Moreau examines the dynamic relationship between Moreau and the creatures which he has produced through experimentation. Initially, Moreau’s authoritarian rule over the creatures is established through a biblical motif when the monsters repeatedly recite “Learn the Law. His is the hand that makes. His is the hand that heals”. In contrasts to the animals’ acceptance of authority, Shakespeare’s Caliban repeatedly confronts Prospero, demonstrated through the historical allusion to the lethal Red Plague when Caliban snarls “The red plague rid you (Prospero) / For learning my language” following his realisation that he has been exploited by Prospero emphasising the influence of discovery in promoting the challenging of authority. However, the confronting, physical discovery of Moreau bleeding questioning his supposed immortality catalyses a shift in the existing power structures accentuated using synecdoche when the Leopard-man symbolically “with eyes aflame and curling lips, leapt towards his tormentor (Dr Moreau)”. Furthermore, discovery may prompt a change in an individual’s mannerisms such as the creatures who adopt increased authority and transform to the point the island resembles a new world revealed through Wells’ denouement where “at night the air was hideous with their calls and howling” substantiating the supremacy of the animals through the temporal setting. Whether it be through illnesses, facing the elements, or suppressing one’s natural tendencies and desires, man has always suffered greatly from challenging the ways of nature. Man himself is a natural creature; however, due to his own pride, he has been turned against nature, and towards the industrial habits of convention. In the three short stories “The Birth-Mark,” “The Yellow Wallpaper,” and “The Open Boat,” the reader sees this theme of man’s failure to control nature, as well as the risks he takes in order to do so.
John Marcher, the protagonist of “The Beast in the Jungle”, is about a narcissistic upper-class man who believes his life is to be defined by some unforetold event. He focuses only on himself and as a result, he neglects everything and everyone in his life. Marcher meets May Bartram, a woman who knows his secret, and instead of pursuing a romantic relationship with her, or even a genuine friendship, he uses her for his own benefit. The fact that the children have more affection towards the machines means that the relationship between them and other human beings is not strong enough therefore they distance themselves from the rest of the world.
We live in a time where technology is at the center of our society. We use technology on a daily basis, for the simplest tasks, or to aid us in our jobs, and don’t give a second thought to whether these tools are actually helping us. Writers such as Kevin Kelly and Clive Thompson argue that the use of technology actually helps us humans; whiles writers such as Nicholas Carr argue that technology affects people’s abilities to learn information negatively.

The last decade of the twentieth century in America saw a rise in programs for human’s “self betterment.” A popular form of betterment is that of the inner animal. Interest in Native American animal mysticism, vision quests, and totem animals have increased dramatically in the past few years. No forms of media have been spared; Calvin Klein’s supermodels come on during sitcom commercials to tell viewers they need to be a beast, or to get in touch with their animal within. In the last decade of the nineteenth century, however, animalism was viewed not as a method of self-improvement but as the reprehensible side of humanity that lingered beneath the surface, waiting for an opportune time to come out and play. In Frank Norris’ novel McTeague, humans are no better than the beasts they claim to control. They cage and torment defenseless creatures, but cage and torment themselves far, far, worse. McTeague, Trina, Zerkow, and Marcus are animals in thin human’s clothing, walking the forests of McTeague, waiting for the opportunity to shed their skin and tear each other apart, while the real animals of the world continue leading lives far superior to their human counterparts.
Humans and animals have always coexisted together for as long as man could remember and exist. They would hunt each other for survival, sometimes man would come out as the victor, and sometimes it was the animal. Mankind would feast on them like they would feast on us. With time, this relationship would change. The animals would become our companions as well as being our food. They would become our hunting tools, such as in tracking prey. They would later be used as our means of transport and also as labor tools, such as when humans would need help working on their farmland. Let’s not forget that they also provide us with entertainment, such as in a zoo or as a circus attraction. Although only some cultures still consider some animals as sacred, most of us look down on them, consider them inferior to us. There was however a time when we worshipped them more and even admired them. We will explore this worship and admiration of animals in this essay as we compare and contrast the depictions of animals in the Upper Paleolithic period in cave arts and in Ancient Egypt in order to identify the presence of a shift, if there was one, in our reverence of animals in between both periods.
In The Machine Stops, E.M. Forster projects life years from now where people live underground with extreme technological advances. Also, people live separated in little rooms where they find a variety of buttons they can press in order to perform any task they desire. They do not communicate with people face to face as often as we do now. Without a doubt, their society is very different from ours. All of the inhabitants are used to living along with the Machine and it is hard for them to imagine life without everything the Machine is able to facilitate. People are so caught up with technology that they find it absurd to spend time in nature. Because of the dependence people have towards the Machine, they have somewhat lost their humanity and become a machine themselves. The characters Vashti and Kuno perfectly represent how inhumane or humane a person could potentially be in such an environment.
For years, authors and philosophers have satirized the “perfect” society to incite change. In Brave New World, Aldous Huxley describes a so-called utopian society in which everyone is happy. This society is a “controlled environment where technology has essentially [expunged] suffering” (“Brave New World”). A member of this society never needs to be inconvenienced by emotion, “And if anything should go wrong, there's soma” (Huxley 220). Citizens spend their lives sleeping with as many people as they please, taking soma to dull any unpleasant thoughts that arise, and happily working in the jobs they were conditioned to want. They are genetically altered and conditioned to be averse to socially destructive things, like nature and families. They are trained to enjoy things that are socially beneficial: “'That is the secret of happiness and virtue – liking what you've got to do. All conditioning aims at that: making people like their inescapable social destiny'” (Huxley 16). Citizens operate more like machinery, and less like humans. Humanity is defined as “the quality of being human” (“Humanity”). To some, humanity refers to the aspects that define a human: love, compassion and emotions. Huxley satirizes humanity by dehumanizing the citizens in the Brave New World society.
In his essay “The Ancient Comic Tradition”, Bernard Knox states that “Slave and free were not so much separate classes as separate worlds: Aristotle could go so far as to claim that they were separate natures” (131). While the concept that slave and free are separate worlds is defensible given the vast differences in lifestyle between the two, the idea that they are separate natures is not a logical extension of this fact, but rather a separate idea altogether. Fundamental nature has nothing to do with one’s political or social situation, but rather one’s innate capabilities, motivations, and morality. Our task, then, is to determine the degree of similarity (or lack thereof) in the innate capabilities, motivations, and morality of the masters and slaves in this play.
