At first, the study of nursing theories may seem like a daunting task, however understanding its appropriation and function makes them applicable to daily practice. Advanced practice nurses have strived for decades to distinguish nursing as a profession. With the creation of the metaparadigm, or the global focus of nursing, advanced practice nurses created not only a focus statement for all of nursing but also a definition in which to procure theories that drive all current nursing practices (McEwen and Wills, 2014). One theory that has withstood the test of time is the Betty Neuman Systems Model. Originating in the 1970’s, the Systems Model is so adaptable, that it can be applied to a variety of nursing fields in addition to different …show more content…
Neuman’s Systems model is comprehensive and dynamic which makes it ideal for both in and out patient settings. In the high stress and high acuity environment of the Intensive Care Unit, ICU, applying such a model can help retain a holistic focus on patients and understanding both actual and perceived stressors in an attempt to regain wellness. Although considered a large deviation from baseline wellness the role of the ICU nurse is to assist patients as far as possible towards wellness, transitioning to lower levels of care with goal of returning home. Author Paul Fulbrook (1991) used the Systems Model to create a unit philosophy that reflected a holistic view and also created a standardized worksheet, to help nurses create a personalized care plan based on each metaparadigm concept in addition to Neuman’s variables, lines of defense and resistance and actual or perceived stressors. (Figures 2-4) The adaptation of the Systems Model in the Portsmouth ICU, helped nurses develop an individualized plan of care and improved total care of both patient and …show more content…
As of 2012, more than half of all American adults have one or more chronic health conditions such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes and stroke. (CDC,2015) . With costs for managing these preventable diseases totaling near $300 billion per year (CDC,2015) using prevention as intervention is unmistakably a more fiscal and proactive approach. One manner of helping Americans become more centered on self care and wellness is the role of the “Nurse Health Coach” which was conceptualized using Neuman’s Systems Model in addition to several other theorists. According to the INCA, the Nurse Health Coach is a holistic community based health and wellness nurse who works with clients to prevent chronic diseases through education and behavior modifications. The flexibility of the nursing profession places nurses in a prime position to move from the passive educator, “doer-fixer” role to that of a coach that works together with the system to create specific, achievable client centered goals that can be built upon in the future. Coaching will undoubtedly provide leadership opportunities for nurses to transform healthcare.
Conclusion: The Neuman Systems model is a flexible, easily understood and applicable to practice to meet to goals of a variety of clients. Whether or not, there is awareness, every practicing nurse holds a set of values, beliefs and knowledge that guides their care and is in

Johnson’s Behavioral System Model is a model of nursing care that supports the development of efficient and effective behavioral functioning in the patient to prevent illness. The patient is recognized as a behavioral system composed of seven behavioral subsystems including affiliative, dependency, ingestive, eliminative, sexual, aggressive, and achievement. The purposeful requirements for these subsystems include protection from noxious influences, provision for a nurturing environment, and stimulation for growth. When any subsystem is imbalanced, it is the nurse’s role to help the patient return to a state of equilibrium.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. The ANA “has long been instrumental in the development of three foundational documents for professional nursing; its code of ethics, its scope and standards of practice, ands statement of social policy.” (ANA, 2010, p. 87) The ANA defined nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” and used to create the scope and standards of nursing practice. (ANA, 2010, p. 1) These “outline the steps that nurses must take to meet client healthcare needs.” () The nursing process, for example, is one of the things I use daily. Other examples include communicating and collaborating with my patient, their families, and my peers, and being a lifelong learner. I continually research new diagnoses, medications, and treatments for my patients. As a nurse of ...
Healthcare is a continuous emerging industry across the world. With our ever changing life styles and the increased levels of pollution across the world more and more people are suffering from various health issues. Nursing is an extremely diverse profession and among the highest educated with several levels ranging from a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to a registered nurse (RN) on up to a Doctorate in Nursing. Diane Viens (2003) states that ‘The NP is a critical member of the workforce to assume the leadership roles within practice, education, research, health systems, and health policy’.
There are many models available including Roper Logan Tierney (RLT) (1996).The RLT model, which my portfolio is based, offers a framework for nurses to be able to ensure that individuality is taken into account when undertaking nursing care. In order to ensure that all aspects of an individual's life are integrated into an effective plan of care, Roper at al (1996) uses a problem solving approach and the nursing process in conjunction with their model for nursing.
Many communities, regions, and states are working together to create the culture of health by redefining the meaning of getting heathy and staying healthy. These communities, regions and states are addressing the social, physical, economic environment that people live in. The Americans can overcome the multitude of disparities and creates equalities with the help that directs resources, research, compassion and community involvements (Maughan, 2014). Health disparities are not just a health issue, it is a combination of financial issues, racial issues, education issues and others. Nursing leaders can address these health disparities differently. For example,
To make good nursing decisions, nurses require an internal roadmap with knowledge of nursing theories. Nursing theories, models, and frameworks play a significant role in nursing, and they are created to focus on meeting the client’s needs for nursing care. According to McEwen and Wills (2014), conceptual models and theories could create mechanisms, guide nurses to communicate better, and provide a “systematic means of collecting data to describe, explain, and predict” about nursing and its practice (p. 25). Most of the theories have some common concepts; others may differ from one theory to other. This paper will evaluate two nursing theorists’ main theories include Sister Callista Roy’s
The assigned case study revolves around the life and various changes that are occurring to Mrs. Smith. The goal is to plan an Advanced Practice Nursing care for her that is personalized and specific to her circumstances, stressors, strengths, support systems and goals. It is based on the assessment of her physiological, social, emotional systems. In order to accomplish the goals and objectives, the General Systems Theory will be utilized to assist and guide the APRN in assessing and recognizing the problems present in the various aspects of her life and formulating interventions that will assist, guide, and direct her towards resolutions, health, wellness, acceptance and overall positive actuality.

The best way to look at nursing theories is like the foundational block. Nursing theories are important set the tone of how a nurse will practice. A nurse will use intuition, practice, past expertise and events, and couple with learned theories to work every day in order to give the best patient care. it is all the more important to appreciate what first advanced nursing beyond mechanisms of practice to becoming a knowledge-based force in healthcare: That force is nursing theory and the theoretical thinking and research that generate theory. The complexity and depth of nursing are reflected in its structure of knowledge, which includes discipline-specific components such as philosophies, theories, and research and practice methodologies”( Reed, 2006). Patient care is a wide topic, but a key role in a patient’s care is the patient themselves, an educated patient is vital to their well being and higher level of care.

The theory has generated various studies from different disciplines such as developing frameworks for nurse resilience (Turner & Kaylor, 2015), complex adaptive systems (Florczak, Poradzisz, & Hampson, 2012), quantitative research on Neuman’s lines of defense and resistance (Gigliotti, 2012), medieval metaphor in simulation debriefing (McClure & Gigliotti, 2012), and developing assessment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting through NSM (Bourdeanu & Dee, 2013). There are a lot of current studies today that continually use NSM into developing new middle-range theories to guide education, research and practice which suggest a growth and change within disciplines. In addition, the value of Neuman’s theory is most applicable in a world that is ever-hanging. Because the world is in constant evolution, various ways of assessing primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention to risk factors are significant to nursing practice. NSM will advance a global agenda for wellness that prevent further complications and increase client satisfaction (Lowry, Beckman, Gehrling & Fawcett, 2007, p. 227). Helping clients achieve an optimal stability with NSM-guided nursing practice is also accomplished by fostering global and national collaboration among various disciplines. Furthermore, it is predicted that by 2050, an increase in wide dichotomy in interpersonal connection will exist. Because of this, nurses guided by NSM are keys to
Betty Neuman was inspired by many different theorists to develop a system's model in 1970 that serves as a teaching tool for graduate students. It is one of the most frequently used models for nursing research. This conceptual model focuses attention on the response of the client system to stressors in the environment. According to Butts & Rich ( 2012) as cited in Fawcett (2005), Neuman's Systems Model is pragmatic and can be used as guide for nursing education and practice, it can be translated to other cultures, and it has the potential to facilitate resolution of universal nursing concerns. Like other models of nursing, the major concepts are person, health, nursing and the environment but Neuman uses a systems approach to explain how these
The Neuman Systems Model provides a systematic approach to nursing research and practice that allows for empirical research and data collection. This model has been used to develop several middle range theories; it also encourages evidence-based practice and outcomes (Ume-Nwagbo, DeWan, & Lowry, 2006). Neuman (2007, p. 112) states, “Theory-based care activities will scientifically validate a science of nursing, helping close the gap between practice and education.” Continued research is needed to support and refine the concepts that produce theory-based nursing interventions in nursing practice. The Neuman Systems Model Research Institute is committed to encouraging research that is focused on obtaining new nursing knowledge based on the Neuman Systems Model and derived middle-range theories (Neuman & Fawcett,
