Most parents are concerned about which type of child care is best for their children. In the past, mothers usually stayed at home to raise their children, so they did not need to decide who nurtured the children. However, today’s circumstances have changed. The ratio of stay-at-home mothers has been decreasing steadily. According to statistics, 61% of mothers with children under age three were employed in 2012, whereas only 34% of them worked in 1975 (Statistics Brain). Because of financial problems, some of them might work, or they might want to work in order to build their careers since traditional gender roles have changed. Regardless of why they work, working mothers who want to keep working have to return to their work in three months after giving birth. According to the Family and Medical Leave Act signed by Clinton in 1993, employees are allowed to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a newborn baby or sick relative (Child Care). Therefore, they either have to find substitutes who can care for their babies or take them to some child-care providers such as day care centers or home-based child-care providers. In percentage terms, while only 27% of infants and toddlers are raised by their mothers or fathers, 22% are cared for by relatives, 22% are in day care centers, 17% are in home-based child care providers, and 7% are with babysitters or nannies (“Fast Facts”). If a father or a mother cannot help but work altogether, they have no choice except for these alternatives. However, it has decreased recently because more regulated providers have turned into unregulated and, the decreased number recorded 11,383 in 2006. (MacLaggan) One problem is that the quality of the unregulated home-based day care is as poor as, and sometimes worse than that of day care centers in regard to children’s safety and development (“Child Care”). Another problem is that some providers who care for a few children in their homes do not even know that they are running businesses illegally but think that they are just babysitting (MacLaggan). As a result, deaths in unregulated home-based day care have been increasing steadily. While ten children died in unregulated child care in 2005, eighteen children died in 2007 and more than half of the deaths were due to abuse or neglect (MacLaggan).
There is a problem in Texas impacting children’s futures; many childcare centers and homes are not providing children with quality care. In an article about cost and quality in Texas childcare, child development experts Susan Eitel and Joyce Nuner quote a study stating “that [nationally] only 10% of infants and toddlers are in high quality [childcare] programs” (34). The term ratio describes the number of children one caregiver is watching. This number is one of the major factors in the quality of a childcare program. Organizations such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children know as NAEYC release recommendations regarding ratios and accredit programs based on their compliance. Childcare centers and homes must comply with certain minimum standards enforced by Texas regarding ratios; however, these standards often set the bar lower than recommendations made by these early childhood experts. The current standards in Texas do not ensure that all young children receive quality care; for this reason, the Texas Department of Family Protective Services should strengthen the minimum standards regarding ratios to better regulate the quality of care children receive.
The childcare industry has variables including childcare by a family member, a traditional caregiver or a day care center. It depends on a family’s situation as to which one benefits them most. The two types of childcare to be discussed are the traditional caregiver and a day care center. Parents must decide whether they want a one-on-one or a group setting for the care of their children.

In the United States, a third of mothers return to work within three months of childbirth compared to only five percent in other industrialized nations such as Germany, Sweden, and the UK (Berger, Hill, and Waldfogel 29). The rapid return of mothers to the workforce sparked interest in the effects the return has on the child’s behavior and health. The experiments measure the child’s health and development by the amount of time the mother breastfeeds, the immunizations the child receives, their score on a vocabulary test, behavioral problems, and the amount of doctor’s visits (Berger, Hill, and Waldfogel 36). Mothers who returned to work within twelve weeks were less likely to breastfeed their child, provide as many doctor’s visits and immunizations, and there were more noticeable behavioral problems at age four (Berger, Hill, and Waldfogel 39-42). A normal day for a daycare facility is to have many classrooms full of students like a typical public school; however, they are younger children and are being supervised by an adult. That adult is responsible for, on average, four to ten students at any given time, ages ranging from zero to six. During that time, a lot can happen. These busy workers have many responsibilities throughout the day. The most important one is safety. Because these children are so young, they are also adventurous therefore need a lot of attention. Daycare workers have to spend much time supervising these children while performing other tasks throughout the day. Not only do children need to be supervised to be safe, but they also need to have a safe, clean and presentable environment that the daycare workers of the facility are to maintain. One way to keep things clean is to sanitize, in which is a big task of these workers. There are many different areas to consider when preparing for and having a newborn. Whether the pregnancy was planned or unplanned or the couple is married or not, a newborn baby brings new responsibilities. Having a baby also forces people to make adjustments both financially and within the family. Parents also express concerns and expectations when having a newborn comma especially when it is their first; including what roles each parent and family member should play, how much confidence they have in their parenting skills, and how much financial strain would be placed on the family once the newborn has arrived. The newest issue in today’s society is the fact that many women are delaying childbirth and having more children in their later years of life.

This paper will discuss three types of non-parental child care including center-based care, in-home care, and family day care. With all said and done, I think day-care is not a bad place for a child to be after all, as long as no one takes advantage of the situation. This means that the people supervising the children in day-care centers should not take advantage of their parents’ absence to mistreat them, and neither should the parents use day-care as an excuse not to spend quality time with their young ones.
Summer vacation and the resulting school schedule require parents to schedule their jobs around their children’s vacation. In fact, many parents (traditionally mothers) are forced to find lower paying, flexible part-time jobs to be available to care for their children during the summer. As a result, mothers are forced to occupy less satisfying positions to assure the care and safety of their children. Parents who do not have flexible work schedules, must spend an inordinate amount of money on childcare during the summer.
