Student Support Teams (SST)
The Student Support Team (SST) is an interdisciplinary group of professionals and parents who attempt to address the needs of students who are having academic and or behavioral difficulties at school. SSTs are mandated by the Georgia Department of Education as a result of a legal decision Ollie Marshall case, 1984. The ruling address concerns that minority students were being disproportionately referred to and placed in special education programs. As a result, the SST model involves viewing students from a holistic perspective. It is also based on the premise that “two heads are better than one” when developing plans for students who are having difficulty in school.
The selection of the School Support Team (SST) is the responsibility of the school. Members who make up the student support teams vary from school to school. Three is the minimum number of SST participants as defined by Georgia Board Rule 160-4-2-.32. These may include an administrator, counselor, regular education teacher, special education teacher, school social worker, parent, ESOL teac...
Graziano’s article over the handling of his son’s disability in the classroom also involves issues that relate to teachers detecting signs of mental illness in the classrooms, how teachers identify a behavioral troubled child, and training school counselors on the Section 504 policy that are all happening in the world today. Realizing these issues can help parents with giving their child the best out of their education and can also help teachers understand the importance of their relationship with students. Everyone should have the opportunity for a brighter future and having a learning disability should not be the end of the road for any student.
Student support teams develop and implement indluvailed plans for the students that are in need of tier 3 interventions. Students that many need tier 3 interventions is put into place when that child is struggling with their tier 2 supports. The school team determines whether the child needs to up their intervention to tier 3 or not. The school team hsa to review a progression monitoring data sheet before determining who is struggling and needs a referral to the tier 3 interventions. A tier ⅔ systems team comes into place when the child is in need of changing interventions. The ⅔ systems team helps create a student support team based of the child's needs. The student support team includes a content expert, someone who is familiar with the school system, individuals who are familiar with the students, and a member of the tier ⅔ systems team. The member of the ⅔ systems team is the main communication spokesman between the teams. Allowing this member to communicate for both teams allows the ⅔ systems team to listen or provided feedback and concerns, to secure tools or opportunities for
It is required that the student be placed in the setting most like that of typical peers in which they can succeed when provided with needed supports and services (Friend, 2014). In other words, children with disabilities are to be educated with children who are not disabled to the maximum extent appropriate. Removal may only occur when education in regular classes, with the use of supplementary aids and services, cannot be achieved satisfactorily (Yell, 2006).
I attended a support group at 204 S Beverly Drive 116 Beverly Hills, CA 90212. The support group takes place every Tuesday from 6PM-8PM. If a team member cannot make it on Tuesday they can also attend on Saturday from 9AM-11AM. I attended a domestic violence class. The counselor name is Dr. Gordon, his License Marriage and Family Therapist. Dr. Gordon provides the following support group domestic abuse, domestic violence, emotional disturbance, Grief, Internet Addiction, and narcissistic personality and online anger courses and self-esteem. Once you enter the office there is coaches and it feels very comfortable. The instructor was sitting on his desk going over roll call and charging the fee. Once he finished roll call and charging he
Selecting and training effective support providers. Support providers are experienced teachers who recognized the importance of helping beginners identify and understand their teaching strengths. Minimum requirement for support providers should be teachers who are successful in their own classrooms and articulate about their practice. However, since working with beginning teachers is different from working with students, a good support provider should be temperamentally suited to collegial work with other
A longstanding national issue that continues to concern the public is the disproportionate representation of children from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds in special education. The fact is that the proportion of minority students in the population of school-age children has risen dramatically to over 35%, which is increasing the diversity of students in many public schools throughout the nation. This makes the phenomenon of disproportionality especially troubling. With a growing population of minority children comprising a greater percentage of public school students, we must be responsive to the growing needs of an increasingly diverse society. The overrepresentation of minority students in special education has been posed as an issue for more than 3 decades, but it is worth asking whether the efforts of legislative actions, educational reforms and legal challenges have really made improvements to this issue. More importantly, disproportionality should be examined as a correlation to underlying conditions that can pose a great effect upon not only the quality of a child’s education, but also ______.

The Gaskin Settlement Agreement is an agreement between a group of families and advocacy organizations who filed a class action lawsuit against the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) on behalf of a group of children with disabilities in 1994. This agreement does not change a student’s placement, program, or IEP in any manner. Only the IEP team has the authority to make modifications that will impact a student’s IEP. The main goal of this settlement is to make sure that IEP teams will determine if the goals in a student’s IEP may be implemented in a general education setting with supplementary aids and services prior to considering an environment that is more restrictive in nature. The elements of this case were designed to help increase the capacity of school districts to provide related services, SDI that is appropriate, supplementary aids and services, and supports to students who have disabilities that are placed in general education classrooms. The PDE lists many important elements of the Settlement Agreement to be aware of...
As a student, practice is crucial to learn group therapy techniques. In order to achieve these practices, I attended 2 support groups of the same topic. Observation and attendance constructs an idea of how group therapy works. Attending this group was important because of the profoundness of its meaning and experiences I have witnessed.
...concerns, and many others, delineated in the CEC Special Education Professional Practice Standards and the Georgia Code of Ethics for Educators, are echoed in the Professional Dispositions and Behaviors Rubric of the State University of West Georgia for Advanced Programs in Special education. These three instruments provide a framework to which candidates in preparation programs, teachers, and administrators can return for problem resolution, and professional growth and development. Not only does this framework house the concerns of collaboration, professionalism and the belief that all can learn, it also safeguards the integrity of the field of education, and ensures students will be able to receive an education in an environment that makes every effort to “respect the culture, dignity, and basic human rights of individuals with exceptionalities” (CEC-SEPPS 1.7).
IST’s consist of school based professional supports with the purpose of exploring additional interventions or assistance (support teacher and student). The different school professionals on the IST vary depending on the area of concern of the student (i.e. oral language, behaviour, social skills, attention, etc..).
Social influence/peer groups were one of the dominant themes in my observations, survey, and literature. Social influence looks at how individual thoughts, actions and feelings are influenced by social groups (Aronson, 2010).The desire to be accepted and liked by others can lead to dangerous behavior. College life can be an overwhelming experience for first time college students and or transfer students as they struggle to manage class time and social activities in an attempt to fit-in in the new environment that they may not be used to. Students can experience too much anxiety and drop out of college or fall behind classes. Working at the Cambell Student Union information Center, I observed a great deal of students falling into this trap of social influence and peer pressure. A female student tripped as she was going up the stairs to Spot Coffee but did not fall. What appears to be a group of guys who are not popular (guys who are not very well known), were seating where popular students normally seat. The group of guys started laughing at the girl and stopped. One guy kept laughing, but it was obvious he was forcing the laughter as to purposely attract attention. He started making jokes about the girl and carrying on the laughter so he would appear to be funny. Another example, which portrays peer influence, involves parties over the weekend. Multiple students stated they were falling behind in classes on the grounds of their friends wanted to go out the night before and they did not want to seem/appear “lame” so they tagged along. The influence of a group is intensified by the person’s desire to be an accepted member of the peer group. To achieve this desire he tries to conform in everyday to the patterns approved by the grou...
Imagine you're playing in a volleyball match. The setter sets up the ball for you and you come in, and slam the ball to the floor. In many ways, peer tutoring is like volleyball. The tutee is the hitter, and the tutor is the setter. In this situation, they are peers that the coach, or teacher, put together to score the point, or get the A+. See, the tutor is always trying to make the tutee better. Most peer tutoring programs have had positive results. Many studies prove them to be cost effective and academically beneficial. However, some might argue it to be a waste of time and not at all effective compared to a teacher. Valley Center schools should create a peer tutoring program because it will help students build communication skills, lead students to a better future career, and expand students' general knowledge.
Children suffering emotional and behavioral disorders are in need of effective interventions and strategies that will provide them relief in stressful situations and help them self-regulate their behavior. Effective interventions for this population could result in reduced distractions (both personally and within the classroom) and enable them to increase their learning time, thereby optimizing their educational careers. An intervention of yoga and related relaxation techniques may provide students a natural and holistic approach to accomplishing these goals.
Collaborative learning is a situation where two or more people attempt to learn something together. Dillenbourg, P. (1999). Lev Semenovich Vygotsky, (born in 1986), introduced his theory that, human development—child development as well as the development of all human kind—is the result of interactions between people and their social environments. What this states is that the development of a “higher education” is the product of comparing and contrasting ideas of others ultimately to conclude a solution to a problem as a whole or group. Everyone’s input in a collaborative situation will play a role in final solution.
