Chad Johnson was an amazing football player and athlete who had a lot going for him. After highschool he stopped athletics and he used a lot more electronics than he used to. After awhile he developed health problems and he started to have a lot more academic issues and troubles. Many people wondered why he seemed to just fall off. Scientist and health groups have done many tests and observations on how too much screen time can affect your body and your health.Limiting screen time gives you more time to read and improve your reading skills and it keeps you from having multiple health issues.
To start, limiting screen time gives you more time to read and improve on those skills. To explain, James McNair reports that, “silent reading will
surely help because they can go over words they do know, and learn as they go”. This really helps because some classwork that is assigned may be harder for lower level learners and the information may have a lot of words that they do not understand. When I was younger I used to hate reading and I was very bad at it so my parents started making me read books and my reading skills have improved and I don’t hate it as much In addition, limiting screen time also keeps you from having health issues of all kinds. In fact, the latest CDC study found that teenagers’ weight did correlate with their screen time: Only 20 percent of obese kids were limiting TV and computers to two hours per days -- versus 31 percent of their normal weight peers. Getting too much screen time can lead to high blood pressure and cholesterol, sleep loss and problems at school. A football and Basketball player on my team got hurt in a game and when he came back to school from watching tv and eating all the time he had gained 30 pounds and he could not run and jump as well as he could before he got hurt. Granted, it is important for kids to be connected with people and not isolated in their rooms, it prevents face to face relationships that are needed to keep you from being a couch potato. Alleviating screen time creates an environment where kids have choices other than just TV and computers. This will also instill an incessant demeanor for more worldly desires for time to come. To summarize, deducting screen time helps you have a more healthy lifestyle and you may find more time to read and also ameliorate your English skills.
Relating back to my thesis, it seems like the use of electronic devices is something that is a definitely a growing issue. And while Carr does not have all the evidence in the world to prove his point, he does have enough to back up what he is saying. Carr is able to use a relatable topic to help draw discussion on something that may be an issue in the future. Also, another strong point in this article, is the fact that almost everyone can relate to having a shortened attention span when reading for long periods of time. It is also evident that the strong points outweigh the weak in this article. Nicholas Carr has many strong points in his article. He successfully proves that what he has to say is worthy of his readers time, and that maybe we should all take caution to how much time we spend on the
Reading is on the decline and our reading skills are declining right along with the amount of reading we do. This is happening right across the board through both genders, all age groups and education levels, people are busy and they just do not have time to read books that they are not required to read for school or work. There are serious consequences to this neglect of reading that will continue to worsen if ignored. We need to take notice of what is happening to our culture and stop this situation from continuing, we must act to correct these issues that we are faced with. These things are discussed in the essay “Staying Awake’’ by Ursula K. Le Guin who uses the NEA essays “To Read or Not to Read’’ and “Reading at Risk’’ to support her argument that there is a decline in the amount of time that we are spending on reading and our ability to understand what it is that we are reading.
First of all, using electronics causes people to get distracted. According to Nicholas Carr, in the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” from The New York Times Upfront, “When we use our computers and our cell phones all the time, we’re always distracted.”This sentence stated by Nicholas Carr contributes to my claim of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week.” For instance, when students are at home using their electronics they get distracted from doing their homework. This is a way technology is affecting many students. This article by Nicholas Carr supports my argument of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because many students do get distracted while using electronics causing them not to do their work.
Very few studies have been done to address the issue of how media affects reading habits affects college aged students. However the few that have been done seem to contradict each other tremendously. Some studies proved that excessive television watching can lead to lower reading levels, while another study said television watching did not affect the way a person reads. This seems to say that either ther...
Television, or screen time, has become a large part of today's society. Whether it's by way of smart-phones, a television, a computer, or a tablet, screen time has negative effects on the cognitive ability of children and adolescents. It has even been proven that it can lead to Alzheimer's disease when a person, in the age range of 20-60 years old, views an hour more than the recommended amount of screen time a day (Sigman 14). In children, the amount of screen time viewed has a relationship with the likelihood of developing a deficit in his attention span; the longer a child views screen time, the more likely he is to be diagnosed with an attention disorder. Screen time, or television, can cause attention disorders and other problem with cognitive abilities in children and adolescents that effect the education they can comprehend.
Richtel gives examples on how the distractions affect students in the long run. “Researchers looked at how the use of these media affected the boys’ brainwave patterns while sleeping and their ability to remember their homework in the subsequent days. They found that playing video games led to markedly lower sleep quality than watching TV, and also led to a “significant decline” in the boys’ ability to remember vocabulary words.” Richtel is including the dangers and effects on technological distractions to students. He is using this to argue that not all technology is good for
As we continue to gaze at a computer screen, our attention span is lost, affecting our cognition. Billout supports this claim as he explains "the variations extend across many regions of the brain, including those that govern such essential cognitive functions as memory and the interpretation of visual and auditory stimuli". He also states that "[t]he more [humans] use the Web, the more they have to fight to stay focused on long pieces of writing". However, it is important that we understand that reading "is not an instinctive skill for human beings. It is not etched into our genes the way speech is" (Billout). This means we as humans have to spend additional time encoding and understanding information we acquire after reading. However, in Sennett's essay, he argues that the time we are allowed to sit back, and process information online allows humans to, "become better at strategic thinking, since, by stepping back, [humans] are able to reason why a failure occurred". Many see this time being wasted time due to drift of concentration when reading. It can also be said that our abilities to convert knowledge conveyed in writing has been framed by "the technologies we use in learning and practicing the craft of reading", as a result to its effects on the
The growing issue of technology and the effect taking on everyday life is bad . The technology in today's society is corrupting the minds of teenagers. In the prot “ Screen Time Rots your Brain”, by: Kathryn Hulick states,¨Psychiatrist Victoria L. Dunckley of Los Angeles has seen many children with symptoms such as sensory overload (overwhelmed by too much information) or a hyper aroused nervous system (a stress response that keeps the body awake and alert). She came up with the name "electronic screen syndrome" to describe these symptoms.¨, the brain receiving too much time in front of a computer screen or phone causing loss of sleep or addiction to the device.
In the article 10 Benefits of Reading, the author Lana Winter-Hebert of Lifehack.org explained why reading is a mental exercise and can improve your mental ability. My reading habits are fairly frequent. I read a lot of magazines and online articles, but I never miss out on a good novel. The atmosphere of a bookstore or library is so comfortable and that drives me to read more, too. I am currently reading two books; The Name of This Book is Secret and If I Should Die Before I Wake. Considering I am constantly reading as recreation or school-wise, I think I read enough.
All of that verbal influence helped incredibly towards being able to talk and understand relatively fast. Whereas reading on my own, supplied no verbal interaction or stimulus. It was all mono and mundane. Most Kids these days have a lot of influences from reading such as bedtime stories from mom or dad, or other family relatives reading to them on occasion. When I was a kid we had game night. If I could be outside interacting with the neighbors, friends, or our dog, this was my preference. Once again this was my stimulus that fueled me with the desire to learn. When it came for the random bedtime story, I fell asleep. Even now when I read, I get bored, and fall
According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for, on average, about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not yet realized how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems. First and foremost, health problems due to the increase in technology usage is becoming a bigger issue than one might think.
Managing time, nutritious and stress all play a part in living a healthy lifestyle. Living a healthy lifestyle is managing all stages of your life. My proposed lifestyle changes are time management, nutrition and stress management.
Reading print books not only improves speech but also helps gets a grasp of what reading books is all about. The TopTenReviews stated,” you 're never going to get that comforting smell of paper or the weight of a good book in your hands when reading an eBook” (1). Getting a brand new book, is ecstatic as the smell of paper or the turning of pages is part of tradition. Reading with a book is convenient because it does not have any battery power to operate. According to TopTenReviews, “Most of the time you have a good battery life but, there will be times when you forget to charge it” (2). Traveling with books helps when doing reading, it will be beneficial if the tablet dies. Reading with print books helps escape from technology that will be distracting towards the
Wise (2014), discusses that within the twenty first century in which the efficient completion of tasks is essential, speed reading is extremely advantageous. Not only does speed reading allow for the quicker acquisition of knowledge, it has shown to influence the brains functionality. Thus, one displays enhanced memory abilities, a higher level of attention and focus as well as a heightened problem solving ability (Wise, 2014). Despite the advantages of an increased reading speed, there is a large and significant disadvantage (Bell, 2001). The danger of developing a rapid reading rate, is that one’s level of comprehension is severely compromised. Therefore, a speed reader would not acquire an adequate amount of information when reading swiftly. It is possible that this disadvantage will have a detrimental effect on the precise completion of various academic and recreational tasks (Bell,
Nowadays, many people think reading is not necessary, since there are so many sources of information and types of entertainment, such as TV, cinema and the Internet. I believe they are wrong because reading is very beneficial in many ways.
