The Oxford English Dictionary’s defines “benign” in several ways. One definition is, “of a kind disposition, gracious, kindly” and another is “exhibiting or manifesting kindly feeling in look, gesture, or action; bland, gentle, mild.” These two definitions give the impression that if something is benign it is harmless at worst and maybe benevolent at best. With these definitions in mind, I think this word is appropriate for what Rothstein is trying to counter; specifically, the idea that the government’s policies which resulted in income suppression were not actually harmful. “Benign explanations” are explanations that are harmless, or that give the benefit of the doubt in order to be gracious and kind. Two paragraphs before this sentence about “benign explanations”, Rothstein tells readers that when researchers were looking at the differences in home assessment values, “the researchers could not find a nonracial explanation for the difference.” Benign explanations then would seem to be explanations that explain away or gloss over the racial discrimination aspect of why homes were assessed differently consistently across the country. The Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of “benign” is an active definition; if something is benign (according to this definition) then …show more content…
The OED also defines benign in relation to medical terminology, saying that when talking about diseases “benign” means “of a mild type, not malignant.” In the medical world, “benign” is often used when talking about tumors. Tumors are “permanent circumscribed morbid swelling, consisting in a new growth of tissue, without inflammation” and can be malignant (dangerous) or benign
of factors contributed rather than an overriding cause. As a result, it is fair to
Peculiar means odd, strange or unusual. So how could benefits be peculiar? It’s how we as people make it to be, as Roxane Gay emphasizes in her article “Peculiar Benefits,” published in 2012. Roxane Gay argues how we must move past the dispute as to why we must recognize privilege to get past societal problems and to not allow its meaning to continue to become diluted. Gay builds a strong argument mainly through audience adaptation, language and her choice of rhetoric was effective enough to affect my perception on her point of view.
ABSTRACT: In the latest edition of Principles of Biomedical Ethics, Tom Beauchamp and James Childress provide an expanded discussion of the ethical theory underlying their treatment of issues in medical ethics. Balancing judgements remain central to their method, as does the contention that such judgements are more than intuitive. This theory is developed precisely in response to the common skepticism directed at "principlism" in medical ethics. Such skepticism includes the claim that moral reasoning comes to a dead halt when confronted by competing conflicts between moral norms in a given pluralistic situation. In this paper, I use examples from the text to show that despite the authors’s arguments to the contrary, balancing judgements are the product of unreasoned intuitions. Given the necessity of some such judgements in any principle-based system, my argument highlights the degree to which principled ethical reasoning rests upon an arational core.
William Raspberry grew up in a segregated town located in Mississippi. After moving away, he became a well-known man who wrote about issues such as rap music and crime for The Washington Post. His last piece, published in 2008 after Obama was elected president, is called “The Handicap of Definition” and focuses on how narrowly defined the word “black” is compared to “white.”
Before reading the different articles on the “American Dream”, I did not know anything about the American Dream. But now I have a better understanding of it. We are living the American Dream. The American Dream is the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. None of this applies to us because nothing is equal in America. The reasons why I believe that we are not living the American Dream in the 1960s is because we are still living with “Discrimination” according to the Mike Brown case. “Indifference” has a lot to do with the way the society is today. Finally, “Economic Indifference” is also evidence that we are not living
...er, it is declining. Since the 1960’s, there have been progress towards racial housing segregation. However, the problem of racial discrimination remains an important factor in determining current examples of social and economic inequality. Despite everything, it is suggests that unfairness does continue to affect the portion of current opportunities. Even though there are laws and agencies that supposed to prohibit this type of matter, it still exist and hidden away from federal and state minds. The article supports the reality that minorities are unfairly treated based on
...ustified. It is a fact that our state is controlled by officials that represent the people and since people are mere mortals, it may be possible for the state to unintentionally discriminate social groups due to flawed judgments. Plausible scenarios today may be unintended discrimination due to national security issues. One may then argue that eventually, the state may have to give affirmative action to the mistreated social groups and the people may indirectly share some blame for electing officials that made the flawed judgments.
According to “Medical News Today” cancer is a disease that is caused by an over growth of anomalous cells on one or more lungs. Cells often go up the air pipes which can cause difficulty to breath. Due to the over production of cells the tissue cells often begin to over produce; which results in tumors. There are two types of tumors: malignant and benign. Malignant tumors are the more dangerous of the two due to its invasive nature; which makes it cancerous. While benign is not invasive in other words non-cancerous. This is why cancer spreads to multiple areas and can be sometimes very difficult to fight. Cancer cells are abnormal not only because of their evasive nature, but also because of its irregular life cycle. Rather than expire like a regular cell, they continuously grow and duplicate which causes the disease to spread. This makes cell abnormal in shape and other qualities; known as a sickle cell. Due to the large growth and reproduction rate of the cells this makes the spreading of the cancer more rapid. Each cancer has specific symptom, for lung cancer the sympto...
Cancer. A word that many people know as a reality. There are many different types of cancer that affect various amounts of people. One especially dangerous cancer is neuroblastoma. “Neuroblastoma . . . accounts for about 6% of all cancers in children . . . The average age at the time of diagnosis is about 1 to 2 years” ("What Are the Key Statistics about Neuroblastoma?"). Neuroblastoma is a devastating cancer found mostly in young children that is hard to terminate but learning the symptoms and most effective treatments can help with diagnosis and cure for an affected child.

A study by Mahira Yunus and Zeba Ahmed on solid thyroid nodules used the following criteria for ultrasound images to conclude that the lesion was malignant: complex lesions, presence of calcium deposits, irregular margins, and heterogeneity. The presence of even one of these features flagged the lesion as malignant. The absence of any of these factors led to the conclusion that the lesion was benign. (Yunus et al., 2010)
Functionalism is a materialist stance in the philosophy of mind that argues that mental states are purely functional, and thus categorized by their input and output associations and causes, rather than by the physical makeup that constitutes its parts. In this manner, functionalism argues that as long as something operates as a conscious entity, then it is conscious. Block describes functionalism, discusses its inherent dilemmas, and then discusses a more scientifically-driven counter solution called psychofunctionalism and its failings as well. Although Block’s assertions are cogent and well-presented, the psychofunctionalist is able to provide counterarguments to support his viewpoint against Block’s criticisms. I shall argue that though both concepts are not without issue, functionalism appears to satisfy a more acceptable description that philosophers can admit over psychofunctionalism’s chauvinistic disposition that attempts to limit consciousness only to the human race.

Inconsistently storing organization data creates a lot of issues, a poor database design can cause security, integrity and normalization related issues. Majority of these issues are due to redundancy and weak data integrity and irregular storage, it is an ongoing challenge for every organization and it is important for organization and DBA to build logical, conceptual and efficient design for database. In today’s complex database systems Normalization, Data Integrity and security plays a key role. Normalization as design approach helps to minimize data redundancy and optimizes data structure by systematically and properly placing data in to appropriate groupings, a successful normalize designed follows “First Normalization Flow”, “Second Normalization Flow” and “Third Normalization flow”. Data integrity helps to increase accuracy and consistency of data over its entire life cycle, it also help keep track of database objects and ensure that each object is created, formatted and maintained properly. It is critical aspect of database design which involves “Database Structure Integrity” and “Semantic data Integrity”. Database Security is another high priority and critical issue for every organization, data breaches continue to dominate business and IT, building a secure system is as much important like Normalization and Data Integrity. Secure system helps to protect data from unauthorized users, data masking and data encryption are preferred technology used by DBA to protect data.
