Family is defined as “a group of people related to each other. Although, family isn’t necessarily based on who you’re blood related to, nor who you’ve known the longest, but by who you can count on and who you love unconditionally. From the people you’ve come to know for years and even the people you’ve known for a few months, the impact that those individuals can make in your life can change your whole perspective on what a real family is. This is created by the respect and bond between people. Meeting new people is a step forward to building a family, for me, being apart of the band has made an enormous impact on who I am today. It has taught me how people should be treated, and that everyone is always going to be there for you …show more content…
They walk into this program not knowing what they’re really in for, some don’t stick around long enough to see what we’re all about but the ones who do stay help this family build stronger than it already was. The band contains people who know you inside and out, for the good and the bad, through the good and the bad, they will always love you for you. Being a junior, this is my third year being apart of this program and it has taught me to never give up on what I want. What we want as a whole is to be the best at what we do best. Marching band gives people opportunities to find themselves and to strive for excellence through the power of music. This family lets people be who they want to be whether it’s playing an instrument or tossing a flag. Band is where you treat every performance as if it were being profiled and adjudicated, it’s giving it your all and striving to be the best no matter what you’re doing, you have to want to be the best in order to be the …show more content…
They’re the ones who lift you up off the ground and tell you to try again when you fail. A family makes adjustments to your performances to help you be the best and make it to the top. These days it’s hard to trust anyone, even true blood related family, which is why I believe it is appropriate to claim the band as m family. Spending numerous days and nights with such a wild yet caring organization helps you realize that these are the people who make your world go round, this is what keeps you going when everything else goes wrong. Band is not just a crowd of geeks who play instruments around the field and on stage, band is an organization that doesn’t give up on you when everyone else does, these are the real heros in my life. Although it may be quite a large amount and I definitely don’t know all of them to a personal extent, but all 330 of those individuals make up my home away from home. They’re the reason I do my best on and off the field. This band is my family, they’re just my different
What is a family? People you’re related to? People you live with? According to Webster.com, it is a combination of those things. However, this definition could vary depending on who you ask. The meaning of family has changed over the years. Divorce and remarriage, single families, same-sex marriage, new family roles, and technology are just a few factors that have changed the way we interpret and define of family.
Family as defined by Webster’s College Dictionary can be one of many different people. Family can be your parents, spouse, children, brother, sister, grandmother, uncle, any blood relative, or even people who are not blood related that share that common bond (Webster 475). My definition of family is similar to Webster’s, but I feel that there is more to it than just being a blood relative or close friend. A person’s actions, beliefs, and morals play a major role in deciding who makes it into that “family” group. Family becomes more of an idea or feeling, like love or hate, than just who a person is or where they fall in your family tree. There have been people that I have considered closer than family just by their actions, even though they were nowhere near related to me. Fortunately, I have not had any blood relation family members make me wish they were not in my “family” (maybe my older sister when we were younger, but that doesn’t count). While reading from Children and Families in our text, I came across many readings that I feel were inspired in many different ways by what the author believed was “family.” There were two readings that jumped out at me and reminded me of my view of how a family should be in their interactions with each other. They were the short story “Flight” by Doris Lessing and the poem “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes. There was also one writing that I read that went against my idea of family and made me happy that this wasn’t the way that my family acted as I grew up, that was “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid. And while some authors lean their writing one direction or another, Adrienn...
Family, and its definition, is universal, it describes a union, particularly with parents and children. One could define Family as a group of people who are related to each other, a person’s children, and a group of related people who lived in the past. In reality, Family has a profound meaning, unique to every household and family. On a personal note, family is defined as a foundation of love, support, and strength.
It gave me memories, opportunities, my best friends, and the best group of seventy or more people I could have ever hoped for. Without band I would not have gone on to any of the leadership positions I acquired, would not have met my best friends from my hometown or at college, and I would not have accomplished nearly as much as I have. It gave me confidence, respect, and discipline, qualities I am very grateful to have. Above all else, it gave me music. The ability to play an instrument is something I will never lose, and a talent which allows me to express my emotions and thoughts in a less forthright manner. I firmly believe that the marching band is the soundtrack to every student’s high school career, whether they are in band or not. Because with every football game, pep rally, and national anthem they hear, a family of band nerds sat in a room for hours each week perfecting it. No high school experience is complete without the band marching on at half time, or crowds of people cheering along to the fight song or alma mater. Marching band is the kind of activity that changes you in ways you do not realize until much later when you look back on the experience. Even if you were not involved in the band- it still affects you somehow. Because it is more than music and awkward
In general knowledge, a family is a group consisting of blood relatives, living together as a unit. However, family has a much deeper meaning to me. Growing up in such a small Haitian community, I was always very close to all of my relatives, whether it was my siblings, cousins or aunts and uncles. I couldn’t imagine a world without them: they are the people who made me who I am today.
I am a band parent. A proud band parent. I was in band many years ago. I had the privilege of being in the Spring/Westfield band program in Houston, Texas. The high school was divided into two separate schools my senior year, and I attended Westfield. The Spring and Westfield band programs both went on to win the ultimate marching band championship - Grand Nationals. I also attended college on a music scholarship. Many of my friends from college are band directors in Texas and other parts of the United States. I play clarinet in my church orchestra. I have been immersed in music for well over 35 years.
Many would also say, “The entire band [becomes] your family,” like my friend, more like sister Jocelyn. She also had no knowledge of being in a marching band, but had been playing her clarinet for a while so she kind of had a feel for what the band class was like. Yes, she talked to kids from band class and just took the class, because it was on her schedule in middle school, but when arriving at high school she was preparing for an awakening. Not a bad one, of course, but marching band was way different from your simple band class. Little did she know how close one can get to a band-mate, or too many band-mates. She saw herself going to upperclassmen everyday seeking help or helping them out; everyone at some point in time is able to be comfortable with one another throughout the entire band. “Even once our senior band members, graduate we [will always] have a connection, even if we are [far] apart from one another, they will always be there to help.” Knowing that our younger band members have this mindset of not forgetting about the graduated teammates touches my heart. Honestly never had I, myself, felt so supported or loved when I came to be a part of something so special and unique. Everyone in the organization is kind hearted, devoted, and supportive, you can never
Family, a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household. Although family is a concretely defined term, the idea of family varies from person to person. But, what makes a family? For those who are surrounded by loving blood relatives, for those who have never known the one to grant them life, for those who have left their blood behind for a more loving and nurturing environment, what can commonly define a family? Family is something defined by the individual. Family includes those who you have come to love, whether platonically or romantically, those you have suffered with, those you have come to respect, and most importantly those you have cared for and in turn have cared for you. To one that could mean people who
When the word “family” is discussed most people think of mothers, fathers, and other siblings. Some people think of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even cousins and more on the pedigree tree. Without family in people 's lives they would not be the same people that they grew up to be today and in the future. When people hear the word family they think about, the ones who will help them in any way they can whether it 's money, support, advice, or anything to help them succeed in life. Family will forever be the backbone of support. They are the ones who support their children during those life decisions. Family is not always blood related. Finally family is forever, family will never go away.
“A family can be defined as a set of people related by blood, marriage or in some other agreed upon relationship, or adoption, who share primary responsibility for reproduction and caring for member of society". (Schaefer, 2009, p. 288) This leads to a wide open range of interpretation on the exact definition of how a family is truly made up. Depending on your culture, religion, or geographical location a family may represent and be comprised of many different ideals and social norms. There are many theoretical perspectives that have their own interpretations on the subject of what a family is and how it is perceived. I will attempt to expound on three of these perspectives; Functionalism, Conflict, and Interactionalism.
What is a family? A family is two or more people consider themselves to be blood related, or related by marriage, or adoption. Our families are who we love. We as families look different in so many ways. A family’s caregiving unit might have a couple, a mother, a father, and children. A family could also be a single parent and child, a group of siblings, a small or large group of friends. A family defines itself in many different ways. Families are the foundation of how our society and how it works. It is how we come into the world and nurtured and given the tools that we need to go out into our world. We are both capable and healthy or not our families influence our lives either in a good way or a bad way. While families
Technology is a necessary part of all aspects of social work today. Social workers use technology in many areas from booking appointments and online filing to online counseling sessions. The use of technology in the professional world of social workers spans over many areas of social work and the different ways that each of those areas uses technology. Not only is it important for social workers to understand technology for their professional life, but private and personal technology has been and continues to grow daily.
To me, family is a group of people that are brought together by blood, adoption, or marriage. I also believe that people do not have to be blood-related to be considered a family. If two or more people have a connection with one another where they can rely and depend on each other and have an emotional attachment, I also believe that to be considered family. Golics, Azam, Finlay, & Salek (2010), define family as a diverse group of people that care for each other on a day-to-day basis (p. 400). My mother and father are still married after 27 years. I am a child of three with two older brothers, both are currently married with children. My older brother Robert and his wife, Lauren have to two girls named Abigail and Avery. My other other brother...
Family is arguably the most important social institution in an individual's life. A family is defined as a group of individuals that are related through blood ties, adoption or marriage, that form an economic unit, where the adult members are responsible
Everyone seems to define family differently, however, the significance of family is the same. For you, family means everything. You can always count on your parents and siblings for help and love. Family is very valuable and important to you and should never be taken for granted. No one can deny that family is the foundation of our generation. A family is where we all start our life journey and helps us grow to be successful throughout our lives.
