Technology is a necessary part of all aspects of social work today. Social workers use technology in many areas from booking appointments and online filing to online counseling sessions. The use of technology in the professional world of social workers spans over many areas of social work and the different ways that each of those areas uses technology. Not only is it important for social workers to understand technology for their professional life, but private and personal technology has been and continues to grow daily.
The main idea that the author of the podcast, Dr. Faye Mishna, wanted to address was the positive side of technology in the professional lives of social workers. While there are many articles and workshops on social media and technology many of them focus solely on the negatives without addressing any of the positives that comes with technology in the workplace. Mishna was a refreshing view since most professionals tend to frown upon technology and how involved it is in society today. She focused on the positives of technology and even social media. Professionals can find many ways to incorporate technology in a healthy and helpful way. One point she made specifically was about meeting the client where they are which is a new perspective compared to the way technology is viewed by most people. I personally agree with her perspective on technology and focusing on the positives instead of the negatives. Realizing and understanding the advantages that there are in using technology instead of only looking at the complications and rules about what you shouldn’t be doing with the technology is must more helpful and constructive.
