The Average Length of Words From Two Newspapers
This is an investigation to compare the average length of words from
two different newspapers, i.e. The Guardian and The Sun. One newspaper
has to be a broadsheet and the other has to be a tabloid.
Aim 1
=====
This is to find out which midweek newspapers have longer average word
lengths and the age range the particular newspaper is aimed at. To
find the reading age of the newspaper I will be following this
formula: -
This formula is to find out the reading age of a passage of writing.
Flesch Reading Ease score
Rates text on a 100-point scale; the higher the score, the easier it
is to understand the document. For most standard documents, aim for a
score of approximately 60 to 70.
The formula for the Flesch Reading Ease score is:
206.835 - (1.015 x ASL) - (84.6 x ASW)
Where:
ASL = average sentence length (the number of words divided by the
number of sentences)
ASW = average number of syllables per word (the number of syllables
divided by the number of words)
Hypothesis
==========
I will be using The Guardian (Broadsheet) and The Sun (Tabloid). I
believe that the guardian will be set at more intellectual readers and
that the words will be much larger than those of The Sun. The guardian
is a much larger paper and The Sun seems to be less in depth.

iv)Taking the middle value for each birth weight category calculate the mean birth weight and standard deviation, across all singleton live babies. For the category of "999g and under" use 750g as the "middle value" for this category. For the category "5000 or over" use 5250 as the middle value. Calculate the mean birth weight and standard deviation for multiple live babies. Explain the method you used giving formulae. (5 marks)

In this regard, it is notable that News Corp Australia and Fairfax titles are, on average, read each week by around ‘60 per cent and 36 per cent respectively of the newspaper reading public in Australia’ (McKnight 2012). Fairfax publishes some of the country’s most influential newspapers, including The Australian Financial Review, The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) and The Age.
The decision to examine the print news media was driven by the nature of the issue being explored. Previous research indicated (Nelkin, 1991; Stroman & Seltzer, 1989) that when it comes to complex and ambiguous issues (e.g., AIDS-HIV), print news provides more in-depth information than broadcast news. News consumers tend to consult print news for the details, whereas broadcast news provides the broad strokes. For instance, the Princeton Survey Research Associates (1996) study of AIDS coverage by the U.S. media found that the print media accorded more analytical coverage when compared to broadcast offerings.

According to newspaper style, paragraphs should be one or two sentences long, with each paragraph including a complete statement or thought. This allows the reader to move from point-to-point quickly, without becoming bored and losing interest in the story. Information in newspaper articles must always be attributed.

The partisan press is presented as an opinion newspaper which generally argues one political point of view or pushes the plan of the party that subsidizes the paper.1 This style is dominantly used in Great Britain. Leonard Doyle, the foreign editor at The Independent in London, feels that this is the best style of delivering news. Partisan journalism strikes at the passion and immediacy of the subjects covered in the news. The reports are based on more narrow discoveries of facts and evidence. The partisan news is very competitive which in turn creates popularity for reading the papers. Doyle says that the British are among the best informed in the world.2
...ers. Tabloids aim to mainly create emotion amongst readers, where as a broadsheets aim to inform its readers. Readers of a tabloid are normally less educated and interested in issues that affect them. On the contrary, a broadsheet reader is expected to be more educated, of a higher socio-economic group and take interest in business and international related affairs. Therefore, the layout and language change to suit the reader. The layout is similar in both papers in the sense they both use pictures and columns. However, ‘The Sun’ chooses to put the story on the front-page and presents it on a larger scale. Language is more technical in the broadsheet and has been used only to inform. ‘The Sun’ is biased towards Sarah Payne and her family and uses a less informing tone unlike broadsheets. A particular message is also apparent in ‘The Sun’. In my opinion, both types of newspapers have successfully satisfied their aims.
