Since the beginning of time there have been people who are leaders and there are those that choose to be followers. As an effective leader, one must possess certain traits and skills that include knowing how to motivate others to accomplish a task. This assignment will discuss the role of a supervisor in the multicultural society of today and the three traits needed to become an effective manager. This assignment will include the relationship between managers, supervisors, and employees and how these relationships assist in guiding organizations in achieving their maximum potential and the importance of finding the right employee to meet those goals.
In today’s business world, supervisors must have a unique skill set that includes being able to communicate well with others, having the ability to effectively coach others, understanding the dynamics of working through others, and possessing performance management skills that allows them to handle changes in a positive manner.
The role of a supervisor is similar to the role of a mother or father. Just as a mother or father nurtures their child to become the best that they can be, a supervisor does the same with his/her employees. A supervisor who is committed to setting their employees up for success is essentially a recruiter, trainer, planner, motivator, coach, and a leader for others to follow (Cassidy & Kreitner, 2010, p. 9). While there are numerous traits that a supervisor should possess, there are three imperative traits that stand out above the rest in my opinion. These traits are (1) emotional intelligence, (2) being honest and ethical, and (3) having the ability to accept diversity.
Emotional intelligence, or EQ as it is known today, can be defined as noncog...

Introduction What does it mean to be an effective supervisor? Before taking this class, I thought that if a supervisor is able get their employees to work effectively, and efficiently, then the person is an effective supervisor. I didn’t realize until taking this class that supervisors do so much more. After learning more about the other tasks supervisors do like planning, being effective listeners, and motivating employees, I have a better understanding of effective supervision. I am aware that I have had supervisory experiences.
The modern world has experienced tremendous changes, which have contributed to changes in people living in the global world. These changes have mainly been brought by globalization, which is a major phenomenon in the 21st Century. Leaders across various professions, businesses, and governments need to cope with globalization since it forces them to cross borders more often and communicate or conduct business with people from other cultures. This process involves developing necessary skills for working effectively in the modern complex world. Actually, the ability of these leaders to work effectively not only requires the development of essential skills but the application of leadership principles in the global work environment. In essence, leaders must develop their ability to apply leadership principles across culturally diverse workforce in today’s global work environment.
A supervisor is a leader who supervises over a person or facility. These supervisors are similar in positon as a director, manager, chief and more. A supervisor handles a wide variety of responsibilities, like helping it subordinates with understanding goals and the facilities targets. Training new, workers on their role and job titles. Assisting with hiring and firing employees. resolving escalations, and many more. Unfortunately some supervisors are not great to work with while others are. Great qualities that make an effective leader would be a supervisor that inspires, motivate, and instill high values in their employees. There are 3 main theories of leadership, one being behavioral theories, second being contingency theories and last being
It is imperative for supervisors to focus on what is required in order for his/her employees to accomplish their job. They must be supportive of their employees and provide continual feedback on their job performance .Supervisor need to include their employees when making changes that effect they way they perform their jobs or finding new way to do things that were problematic. Supervisors should give their employees more responsibly to make them feel more valued and powerful. There is also a major need for promotion, pay increase and compensation system (educational reimbursement, vacation incentives etc.
Communication is a vital component of Social Work as it’s the driving force in engagement and the building of professional relationships. Without effective communication skills, practitioners are unable to find out what the service users, carers and professionals are thinking and feeling, provide clear and accurate information, interpret complex situations accurately or negotiate, mediate and intervene sensitively, authoritatively and appropriately (SCIE, cited 11th February 2014).
There are different ways that the supervisors help the supervisee to gain these needed skills and experience. In the clinical portion, the supervisor evaluates and assist how the supervisees do their work and help to come up with strategies to improve their way of doing things and learning. Supervisors are also setting an example in the way they handle the situation and do their work for the supervisee would know and understand how to be ethical and professional in their work. Supervisors play a supportive role in their supervisees development by “changing, shaping, or supporting their behavior and actions” (Roles and Responsibilities of Supervisors, 2016). Lastly, supervisors evaluate the supervisee performance in how they treat patients and how they handle a certain situation or issue during the sessions. This is done so the supervisor can make sure the supervisee in behaving and doing things in a manner that is ethical and if they are not, the supervisor is there to teach them the correct
Personal Philosophy of Supervision Beliefs and Philosophy School administrators are important in setting the path for a successful school (Glickman, et al., 2014). The principals could play a dynamic leadership depending on how they exercise their beliefs of the organizational and social environment (McNair, 2011). The principals are the primary facilitators for developing the foundations in learning that will last, to manage the student’s performance at schools, and seeking the improvement at school that will cause great impacts in school‘s education (Gordon,1989). In the recent years in the U.S., education has change in a more cultural diversity population, it is imperative that school supervisors, are trained to encounter this cultural issues, but also assisting others with the opportunities to develop appropriate abilities to deal with different cultures (Glickman, et al., 2014). Even though this increasing awareness of the multicultural issues, many supervisors are not being trained how to deal with this issues in the daily practice.
Today’s management in the workforce is composed of all types of people verses thirty years ago when white males held a majority of upper-management positions in companies. These positions are now held by a mixture of ethnic back grounds and women who hold just as many if not more management positions then men. Just by looking at the changes in management demographics shows how important it is for people to understand cultural competency in the workplace. Dr. Roosevelt Thomas Jr. (1999) stated, “Diversity is the collective mixture of whomever we have in our workforce characterized by their differences and similarities” (p.11). Managers and supervisors must understand the characteristics of a diversity mature individual; they also need to be able to articulate the differences between affirmative action, managing diversity, understanding and valuing diversity to build skills that transforms awareness into productive and supportive workplace behaviors.
Leadership is defined as the action of guiding an individual or group of people. Effective leaders shape the behavior and thought process of the individuals around them. As a result, the success of an organization is often impacted by the leadership style and approach of its leaders. Even when engaging with multiple people, impactful leaders maintain their own style of leadership but occasionally change their approach based on the motivational needs of each individual. However, regardless of the style, leadership within an organization is designed to drive the performance of their employees and it is done through proficient communication. This guidance influences the culture of an organization, which subsequently, helps to shape its leaders.
Over the past 50 years, employers have seen a vast shift in the demographic of their employee's. Where once specific jobs were held by a specific type and group of people, today, at that same job, anyone from any ethnic background or gender could be expected to perform the tasks assigned. This shift has caused a significant and beneficial change in the way managers are expected to handle themselves and their charges within today’s working environment. Recognizing the ever evolving social norms while maintaining a balance of unbiased professionalism has become the primary challenge faced by today’s supervisor. Where once we expected organization and task management to be top priorities, today’s workplace leaders must be held to an equally high expectation of social acceptance while maintaining an unbiased supposition of responsibility. A sharp juxtaposition between empathy (for the personal needs of the individual) and responsibility (for the business needs of the company). Finding individuals that can accomplish this is an integral part of the hiring process. Unfortunately this is a task less easily performed.
The Supervisor Training Program is a necessity that this company has. Since we are rapidly expanding, we have more people that we must integrate into our company. These people need to be introduced to our culture and be trained on the things that are needed to make this company successful. In the past, we have sent our supervisors to public seminars and conferences. However, now we have the opportunity to develop a program that helps our supervisors to continue to grow and improve. This program will help management throughout this company build a culture based on engagement, empowerment, and innovation. The program will be learner centered instead of event driven. In order to develop the Supervisor Training Program the development planning process must take place.
The aim of this assignment is to analyze the relevant concepts, theories and models about leadership and describe one person who could be identified as leader and analyze how effective this person’s leadership is and why it is effective. Defining what is leadership comes first, second will provide an overview about my organization and the importance of leadership. Moving forward will address the different type of leaders and the difference between management and leadership. We will address as well, the theories of effective leadership; and last but not least, identify our leader and conclude a summary of this assignment.
The education requirements in Florida are, from time to time, the board will need the physical therapist to prove their professional capability, in order for them to renew their license. Therefore every 2 years they have to complete 24 hours of continuing education. The board can only accept courses taken from a college or university, but they can make exception if there is an emergency. In Arizona there are 3 different sections of activities that can be completed in order to renew your license. The choices are to complete 20 hours every 2 years, complete the minimum amount of 10 contact hours, and you can combine two of the options.
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole. Individuals with a secure sense of self and understanding, acceptance of diversity within an organization tend to be the strongest leaders that not only make others want to follow, but they also encourage other leaders to gravitate to their
The Gung Ho theory can certainly translate to education. The spirit of the squirrel would mean that teachers understand that educating people is important, and has a direct effect on them. The shared goal would be to have all students graduate prepared for life after school. The way of the beaver would involve staff, students and parents having input into how the school works towards achieving that shared goal. All of the above groups will work harder if they feel that they are all part of the process of improving the school. Lastly, the item that seems to happen least in education is the gift of the goose. Teachers are usually left feeling underappreciated both by the public and by their supervisors. The largest complaint from teachers is their monetary compensation. Teachers feel as if they are underpaid and therefore are not always enthusiastic about their work. Within a school, supervisors can do their part to make teachers feel appreciated by giving true active and passive congratulations. These congratulations can be verbal, written, or non-verbal, and would have a major impact on making a teacher feel as if they are doing right work the right way.
