Has anyone thought about the word “human” in the word humanities? The study of humanities and the significance of the word “human” helped better understand this word. This is also showing the significance of the title of the text, “The Art of Being Human”. According to The Art of Being Human “the study of human culture, like philosophy, history, and literature.” (Janaro 2012) There are people who look at the word humanities as just a word; humanities can go into more detail than that. Now you can take some time and think of this word on your own, and I am going to explain what this word meant to me before, during, and after this class. Humanities to me was defined as a person themselves, I had no idea it was about a variety of things such as human culture. Who would have thought it was meant by the humanities that people tell, the places they work, the background they have, and there life story. I would like to know what being a human really means. I was wondering why I would need to take a class that was about a human, I mean a person is a person right. Wrong! The book is titled “The Art of Being Human”, this to me meant nothing before this course. In addition, I could not figure why this book was picked for a course about humanities. When I look at people, I think of their culture and background regarding the humanity. I do not hear the word often but there are words that relate to the meaning of humanities. For example, art and literature remind me of this word along with the word human. Learning this information from the text that was required in this course makes me want to teach people about this word and the meaning behind it. This course was interesting I did not think of this word meaning more than just human. The disciplines like art, literature, and philosophy became known as the humanities. (Janaro 2012) This word has affected me as a person to take one-step back and look into a word when I am not sure on the meaning. As I said before, math and science are important, but the humanities are just as important, if not more. “The humanities, done right, are the crucible within which our evolving notions of what it means to be fully human are put to the test; they teach us, incrementally, endlessly, not what to do but how to be” (Slouka). This quote taken from “Dehumanized” defines and truly puts Slouka’s beliefs into the perspective of what the humanities should teach students and how they should be taught, which I agree with fully. I believe that without the humanities, we, as humans, would all be the same and there would be no room to be different from one another. Whether it be by our culture, religion, or interests, not two people are alike. Individuals should not be bred into being something that they do not want to be or even like Slouka argues, students should not be a “capital investment” for the future of the economy. Students should be investing in themselves to express who they truly are, rather than being something that the economy expects them to
Shiffman believes that the drop in interest in the humanities results in the inability of students to have clear bearings amid life’s uncertainties. He believes that only by studying the humanities will students be able to introspect and recognize that endless achievement may not add up to a meaningful life (Shiffman 5). However, Shiffman fails to realize that this form of reflection need not be done solely by those majoring in the humanities. It can be done by all who try, their fields of study are no limitation. In fact, it may be this same reflection that leads to an individual’s decision to prioritize practicality. Not all those who choose the practical path are doing it for themselves. Many may do it for their families, as a safe and stable means of supporting their loved ones. Others may take this opportunity to give back to their community through the ways they are most skilled. Instead of pursuing a single interest in a certain field, they choose to follow their various callings. Doing solely what an individual loves is a self-centered view of the world. While it is important to chase happiness, it is also important to reflect on what one is doing to spread happiness to the rest of the world. One must find something that they are good at, and put that into the world. They should contribute to others and help the world be better, in addition to following their passions. An individual’s acts of service may just become one of their many passions.
The notion of humanity is a picture intricately painted using the ideals and morals that define us as human beings in contextual society. Throughout our lives we experience “Ah-ha! Moments” that can be small such as figuring out a math problem to big moments where you find out what career you want to do. The “Ah-ha! Moments” are the moments that make life interesting, because in these moments you are gaining knowledge. In each section of the class which includes music, literature, and art they give a bridge between time, meaning that in modern day we can see hysterical pieces. History helps us stay in touch with our past and helps us to learn where we came from. Humanism is a literary and linguistic movement cultivated during the Renaissance that was founded on revising classical Latin and Greek texts, styles, and values. Humanists encouraged looking to the past to discover what is good and how people should act including leaders. Many humanist wrote about how they believe a prince should act and what he should do to be successful in his rule. Most humanists believed that princes should be virtuous in order to be successful rulers as many ancient leaders were. However, Machiavelli in his work The Prince uses history as a part of his argument to undermine some humanist ideals such as being purely virtuous and morality being the key to good government but also uses it to promote humanist ideals such as looking to the past to discover how a leader should behave.

Human reason has not always been a presence in our daily lives. Doing the right thing, being ethical, and making educated decisions, one would think, are the ideal principles behind human nature. Sadly, only in more recent times has human reason shed its good grace on more modern societies. For many centuries, constant war and the reconstruction to nations, countries, and empires led to the rise and fall of many different leaders and in tow their governments. Within such societies, political spokesmen like Machiavelli, Locke, and Marx, interpret their ideas to the people, which still remain significant to this day. One of their main focuses was to raise awareness, on their ideas on trust and human reason. While Locke and Marx urge us to have faith in human reason, as a positive means to society, Machiavelli would claim the contrary. The concept of human nature and reason to both John Locke and Karl Marx juxtaposes that of Machiavelli’s, and their notions derive from their different eras, economies, environments, and strict governments, which ultimately shaped their ideologies on human nature.
Going into this Humanities class, I had no idea what I was getting into. I didn’t know what the Humanities were and how it would impact my education at all. I had taken a number of history classes in high school and in college before and expected the Humanities to flow with my history classes in a sense. In my previous history class’s topics such as wars, The Great Depression, assassinations, the settling of different parts of the world, slavery, witch-hunts, and the use of animals were discussed. I thought that the Humanities would fall somewhere on the line with history. I wasn’t wrong with this assumption, but I wasn’t right either. The Humanities, I have learned, is so much more than the history that surrounds what people did, acted like, made as art, ate, and learned. When some people has done a serious crime and could be considered as inhuman acts by law and/or other human and they might be punished for death penalty. Capital punishment or death penalty still exist until now in some big countries such as, Unites States, Singapore, China and Indonesia (Dieter, 1997). Capital punishment is used by some countries in order to disciplines the criminals. However, in some other opinion capital punishment seems to be dehumanizing because they believe that every single persons had their own value and worth.
