The Appalachian Mountains is a cluster of mountains, ranging from Eastern Canada to Southeastern North America in Alabama. The Appalachian Mountains has many sub-regions like the Piedmont, Blue mountain ridge, Appalachian plateau, Valley and Ridge, and coastal plans. The Appalachian Mountains is known for its history of coal and hardworking people. I consider Eastern Kentucky the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachian Mountains have provided my past and current family a job working in the mines, a great place to live, and could some work done. The Appalachian Mountains has provided my family job in coal since World War II. In Eastern Kentucky my great-grandfather was the first to get the first cart of coal out for the World War …show more content…
II effort. My dad on the other hand works as a welder and master mechanic at Maximum Rebuild. Maximum rebuild is a sub-division of Alpha Natural Resources, they build and rebuild continuous miners for coal mines. My family considers themselves from Elkhorn city, Kentucky or just eastern part of Kentucky. The central part of the Appalachian Mountains is a wonderful place to live.
I think the Appalachian Mountains is a very over looked place in the United States. These mountains have much to offer like four-wheeling, looking at sceneries, and living in a quiet piece unlike the city. The people around here are friendly and almost willing to help at any time. Plus you can do much as more than the city I believe. Though Appalachian Mountains is a good place to live, there could be some work done. The jobs in coal mining are disappearing by the day and more people going into poverty. I don’t believe coal-mining should be shut down because coal produces steel, electricity, cement, thermal heat for heating, and even transportation. The coal-mining jobs is what keeps people living in the central part of the Appalachian Mountains. Allowing and instead of hurting the fossil-fuel driven jobs would help the people here. People would buy more land here, more steel would be produced, and power bills would be cheaper because of coal being produced. Even though the Appalachian Mountains may need some work done, it is probably one of the better places to be. I enjoy the Appalachian Mountains overall because it is my home and my dignity. Some people here say there is nothing here, but I think there is an abundance to do. Other than coal-mining there are many other job fields. I have been to several parts of the United States, and I believe the central part of the Appalachian Mountains is the ideal place to

The majestic ranges of western North America – the Rockies, the Sierra Nevada, the cascades, and the Coast Ranges – arose more recently.
Being raised in the rural, rolling hills of West Virginia provides a childhood that is unforgettable. Being able to see the four different seasons and how they always change so beautifully into each other is beautiful. The hills are sprinkled with timbered forest of many types of trees, accompanied by different types of wild flowers and wild life. Passing through all of the small towns and hollers, you can still see the small farms that have been passed down from generation to generation within the families.
...gers of the old folk music are referred to as “authentic”. The author uses the biographies and the personal experiences of true Appalachian folk musicians to portray what life in the Appalachians was like. The strong family values, the music, the legends.
I would have preferred to live in Pennsylvania out of all the thirteen colonies. Pennsylvania was a very prosperous colony due to the fact that everyone had economic opportunity. Also, the people had civil liberty, allowing them to surpass the other colonies that had multiple restrictions. In addition, they had religious freedom unlike other colonies. Pennsylvania had many great features compared to the other colonies.
...the only major geologic event in the history of the Appalachians. Several glaciers have covered parts of the Northern Appalachians over the last three million years. (Appalachian tales) The mountains have been there ever since and that is how they were formed.
West Virginia and Kentucky have been faced with a rise in health-related issues, leading the nation in cancer-related deaths. Many of those cases have been said to be caused from greater exposer to pollution from coal-mining activity, which is said to increase your chances for cancer along with other fatal diseases. The Appalachia area has seen a rise in mortality rates, over 60,000 cases of those being cancer-related deaths directly linked to mountaintop removal practices. Mountaintop removal has been deemed as cleaner and safer than men going below ground to mine for coal, but with Appalachian communities- primarily in West Virginia, Kentucky and Southwestern Virginia seeing a high rise in cancer, cardiovascular disease, and birth defects rates, mountaintop removal has been looked at as one of the main causes.
I comprehend that the future of coal depends on change and innovation; I feel America needs to use clean energy in the future to protect our environment and public health. I think changes to the clean water act created ambiguity to coal companies, which allowed the dumping of mining waste into our nations waterways. Appalachia needs to rely less on coal mining and concentrate on diversifying the economy. Appalachia has an abundance of resources that can be urbanized to supply new jobs and clean energy methods, such as wind, solar, hydropower and biomass, which could support rural areas. With political and economic guidance, I believe Appalachia could transition from coal to clean energy.
Coal mines in these times were glorified death traps and collapsed. Often. Workers or their families were basically never compensated for anything, and even when they took things to court, essentially no court was sympathetic toward any coal miner or their family, and if their father or brother died, they were on their on for the rest of their life, often then forcing child boys to work if they weren’t already. Also, not many workers spoke proper english in the mines, so they could not read instruction signs, and by misuse of equipment, killing themselves and/or other
More than 50 mountain ranges make up Montana’s Rockies. Glaciers and rivers are found in the mountain areas, too. Some of these rivers flow westward, toward the Kootenai and Clark Fork rivers. Others move eastward, to the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers (Av2 books). Montana straddles the Continental Divided, a geographical line running through the Rocky Mountains from which water flows either east or west in the continental United States.
The Appalachian population extends across thirteen states in the United States including: Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania. These regions are divided into categories of Northern Appalachia, Central Appalachia and Southern Appalachia. West Virginia is the only state that is entirely within Appalachia.1 The environment these individuals encounter is within the mountains, valley and rivers with varying degrees. There are few cities within this culture and many still live in small communities.

Pikes peak can batter understood by studying its location. Pikes peak is the highest and most famous summit of United States located in Colorado Spring. The Spanish were the first European to discover pikes peak in 18th century. “The first Americans who saw the mountain are often said to have been the members of the Pike expedition, led by Zebulon Pike in 1806. Pike called the mountain ‘The Great Peak’” (thousand wonders 2014). He attempted to climb the peak but he was not able because of the heavy snowfall. Edwin James was the first American to climb this summit in 1820. James renamed the “pikes great peak” as “pike peak” which later become one of the famous mining area. Pikes peak is the one of the Colorado’s 53 fourteeners, mountains that raise 14,000 feet above the sea level (Pike Peak mountain 2016). This is the second highest mountain in the state. Everyone could be easily attracted by the amazing landscape of this pike’s peak. The mountain consists of pink colored granite that is known as pikes peak granite.
Impacts of coal mining are visible by landscapes that lack the beauty of a mountainous backdrop and landscapes that are void of any trees or plants. These areas are left barren by the excavating of the earth in order to reveal the coal hidden underneath (Theilmann, 2015). In conjunction with the impact on the environment, various health issues have arisen, along with the heightened issues of safety. Black lung, a respiratory disease, and mine accidents are responsible for thousands of mine workers being injured or even killed every year. These deaths are a result of suffocation from poisonous gases found within the mines and explosions that lead to the collapsing of mines roofs. The mortality rates of workers in the coal mining industry has one of the highest ranks in the industrial sector of mining (Joyce, 1998). As evident, the destruction left behind by the mining of coal is detrimental to the environment and has a huge impact on the welfare of the mine workers employed by the coal mining
Burning and mining coal for fuel is harmful to the environment but because how cheap and easy it is to find many people are unwilling to give it up as a fuel source. One of the problems with coal is that they are limited and are non-renewable so once it has been used we won’t be able to use it again.
