According to the World Health Organisation, depression ranks 4th among the 10l leading causes of the global burden of disease[1] with about 121 million people worldwide have some form of depression, although less than 25% have access to effective treatment[2]. Almost everyone has experienced depression, at least in its mild and more temporary forms as loss and pain are inevitable parts of life. When individuals suffer from mild cases of depression they may feel sad, apathetic, passive, and discouraged, the future may look miserable and life may not be enjoyable. These reactions are normal as many studies show, however these feelings normally fade away after the event causing it has passed or the individual comes to terms with the situation. Clinical depression is more frequent and symptoms are more intense, and as Oatley and Jenkins explain; the duration of the symptoms are out of proportion to the person’s life situation.[3] There are many explanations to the cause of depression but in this essay I will discuss the two main explanations in relation to the title; the biological and the psychological explanation. This creates the nature nurture argument, questioning what the cause of depression is. The psychological explanation to depression is that of which suggests it is a symptom of today’s society and can be split into three sub-explanations, the psychodynamic, cognitive and socio-cultural factors. Freud explains through the psychodynamic model that when a loved one is lost through bereavement, separation or withdrawal of affection, there is a first mourning period and then after a while, life returns to a state of normality. However for some people the mourning period never seems to come to an end and they continue to exist ... ... middle of paper ... ...ypothalumic-pituitary-adrenal axis is a characteristic of the depressed state, particularly as, when the depressive state comes to an end, dexamethasone is again able to suppress cortisol activity,[4] thus supporting the argument of nature being a causing factor of depression. After researching into both sides of the nature nurture argument of depression, there seems to be a strong argument to prove each side, the main one being that they have effective treatment which is the true test to see if the theory is correct. A recent study by Haeffel suggests that depression may be caused by both nature and nurture. This is an interesting argument that may be more reasonable than putting depression down to one cause. This is because a single explanation would be reductionist as it would not take into consideration other factors that have been found to cause depression.
Through my extensive research on depression I have learned a lot of new things. I have learned about the many forms of depression and treatment for depression. I have also learned a little about what is believed to go on chemically in the brain of a clinically depressed person. I was also able to partially determine what sort of role genetics, chemicals and personal influences in the brain. Though I was unable to determine exactly how environmental and personal stress can cause a chemical imbalance in a person, I was even able to speculate about this issue and determine some theories of my own on why and how this may happen.
In unit seven, this learner took part in a debate involving the causes of depression. Depression is a debilitating mental disorder that can be detrimental to a person’s way of living. For centuries, psychologists and researchers have been searching for a single cause of depression, identifying two perspectives to date. The cognitive-behavioral perspective includes influences of faulty thinking that develops from low self-esteem and or a learned helplessness. In addition, cognitive-behavioral perspective indicates environmental influences such as poor living conditions and socioeconomic issues as causes of depression. However, this learner presented evidence along with personal experiences to support the biological perspective of the debate.
The general public believe that depression is caused by both nature and nurture factors. A majority of the public believed that nurture has a greater influence on whether the person gets depression or not.
Depression is a complicated process as it seems be the effect of more than one process. There are many theories surrounding the biological side of depression, however the two prominent ones have developed many studies and encouraged many debates for its cause. The monoamine hypothesis and the neurotropic hypothesis are both different theories concerning the cause of depression, however both holds strong evidence, and when studied further, leads to the possibility of overlap and linkage between the two.
Its basis is to understanding behavior, thought, and emotion by attributing human behavior to biological events occurring in the body, such as genetic influences, hormones and activity in the nervous system. Through the biological approach depression can be developed from low levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. This approach could also associate depression with genetics; an individual could genetically be preordained to have depression.
Approximately 17% of people are having depression in their lifetime (Gibbons, et al., 2012). It was found that “more than 350 million people of all ages suffer from depression” (World Health Organization [WHO], 2012). It is the fourth in the rating of major public problems, and it is predicted to be illness number one in developed countries by year 2030 (Hollon and Sexton, 2012). In Scotland, the number of patients in ten years has been reduced by half, but the number of antidepressants prescribed has doubled (Stirling, 2013). According the Scottish NHS there are 420 thousand patients who are receiving depression treatment (Stirling, 2013). However this statistics might not reflect the size of the problem. According to...
The exact causes of depression seem to differ immensely, but there are some who believe that it maybe caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, or that it may even be hereditary. Still there are others who believe that it is a combination of social, biological, emotional, psychological, and economical influences that may cause someone who has no family history of depression to develop even a mild case of depression.
Sadness is how the human being reacts to the loss of a loved one, the struggles of life, the disappointments, and the frustrations. Although it is a normal feeling in all these situations, there is a broad difference between being sad and being depressed. Unlike normal feelings of sadness, depression overwhelms a person, last a long time, and interferes with his or her day-to-day life. According to the World Health Organization in 2010, depression was reported as the most common mental disorder; it affects 120 million people globally and is among the leading causes of disability. The person that suffers from depression has to deal with being misunderstood and under-diagnosed on a daily basis, which leaves the patient with physical, psychological, and emotional scars.
With further studies scientist have now concluded that an imbalance of chemicals is not necessarily the causing factor of depression. Some factors that can cause an episode of depression are physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, medications, loss or death, substance abuse, serious illness, major events, and genetics. With genetics playing the biggest roll in the cause of depression. “If a person has a family history of depression they are 20% to 30% times more likely to develop depression sometime in their life, compared to the average person who is only 10% likely to develop depression” (Levinson). There have been several studies done by the Medical Research Council Social Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre at King’s College in London on how genetics relate to depression. The researchers found a significant linkage between a certain chromosome, 3p25-26, and depression. “The linkage finding was replicated by another group who found genome-wide-significant linkage for depression in the same region. This suggests that 3p25-26 is a new locus for severe recurrent depression” (Breen
biological factors for depressing are genetics, neurological, chemical, and psychological components that may predispose, or put someone at risk for mood disorders. (533) a theory states that a defect in your genes can cause depression. they play a vital role in developing mood disorders because they are involved in regulating the brain’s neurotransmitters or chemical system used for communication. (533) with the neurological compost it is important to remember that an imbalance of neurotransmitters can interfere with the communication networks and in turn result in mood disorder. also continuos stress on the brain can lead to be in over drive and causes the levels of neurotransmitters and hormones to be off balance. (533) while the psychosocial factors for depression are, such as personality traits, cognitive styles, social supports, and the ability to deal with stressors, interact with predisposing biological factors to put one at risk for developing a mood disorder. (533) some ways of treating dysthymic disorder are, antidepressants, and psychotherapy. antidepressant drugs act by increasing the levels of a specific group of neurotransmitters like monamines, serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine are involved in the regulation of emotions and moods.(534) while psychotherapy is the combination between therapy and antidepressants. for patients with severe depression both of these methods
Depression is characterized by overwhelming sadness, loss of motivation, and interest in activities. This mental illness can be life-threatening and disabling for many people. Depression affects 1 in 10 adults, leading to the majority of the 41,000 yearly suicides. (Hope for Depression Research Foundation [n.d]). Although this is a very disabling disease that makes thousands feel hopeless; but Biomed gives a better insight into the illness. Allowing many to pinpoint why they have depression giving them a kind of comfort with their mental illness. Biomedical research has given an answer to why these people are suffering. “Depression can be triggered by traumatic life events, poor diet, genetic conditions, blood sugar imbalances, medical illness, hormone imbalance, lack of
Depression is a problem that affects our world presently, and even dates back to ancient times. There is not a single reason to why people have depression, but it is actually more a blend of genetic, biochemical, environmental, and psychological components (“Depression”). This condition can happen to anyone, at any time. People of all ages and of every, social, racial, ethnic, and economic group can become victims (Hales 18). When someone has depression, they feel hopeless. They believe that “the sun shines less brightly, the sky clouds over, people seem cold and distant, and the future looks dark” (Elliot and Smith 22). It is difficult for someone to
By genetic factors, that is how things are transmitted from one generation to the next. As the biologists stated in the article we must also know that one is liable to develop depression from environmental stressors. Some examples of environmental stressors may be the noise from an alarm clock or just the noise surrounding, crowding, air quality, natural disasters, and etc. Brewin emphasized “that depending on the misfortunes that one may have had as a child, depression could be contributed to them.” Any type of trauma that may have happened in the earlier years that may not be all the way processed may lead to depression. If one experienced sexual abuse, then that may lead to depression. The person may blame their self for that happening to them and they may become ashamed of their body. Life events may take place and over the years as one looks back on the things that took place they may feel guilty and that can send them into a state of
Low norepinephrine and serotonin activity can lead to depression. But what if a person found an environment that was constantly stimulating and arousing for them or engaged in daily exercise which has been found to elevate these neurotransmitter levels? On the other hand, behaviorists believe that depression occurs when positive aspects of life decrease for a person. Depressed people tend to report less positive rewards and show less positive behaviors than a nondepressed person (Comer, 229). I do not think genes have a greater influence on depression than the environment does. I think that an engaging environment can make people happier. Depression can occur after a tragic life event or can even develop from parenting styles such as physical punishment. It is important for parents to reassure their children and to help their children develop personal control over their lives. Positive thinking and an emphasis on self worth needs to be stressed early in life in order to increase happiness later in
Depression is one of the most common psychological problems. Each year over 17 million Americans experience a period of clinical depression. Thus, depression affects nearly everyone through personal experiences or through depression in a family member or friend.
