Old Versus Young
“The LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). The book of Genesis opens with a story of creation; God creates the world and then humankind. He fashions a man (Adam) out of dust, and a woman (Eve) from Adam’s rib. God places Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, encouraging them to live and prosper, but not to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge. Ultimately Adam and Eve were tempted into eating the fruit, and were punished by God for doing so. The Temptation of Adam by James Barry and Adam and Eve Receive the Forbidden Fruit by Pietro Facchetti both depict the biblical story of Adam and Eve being tempted by the forbidden …show more content…

In contrast, Facchetti’s Adam is more childlike and naive making him less able to make his own decision, as he innocently accepts the forbidden fruit (not knowing what he's getting himself into). Adam’s facial expression in Barry’s painting depicts an older questioning face of Adam, showing that he can make his own decision based on his prior knowledge of the forbidden fruit. Whereas in Facchetti’s painting Adam is shown to be young and curious, indicating that he is less able to make his own decision and consider the consequences of accepting the forbidden fruit. In the painting Eve seems to be persuading Adam to eat the fruit, but Adam is not convinced. This is important because it shows Adam’s loyalty to God for not wanting to eat the fruit that God had told him was forbidden. In contrast, Facchetti’s painting depicts Adam with a …show more content…

For example, in Barry’s painting Adam’s head is resting on his hand, and his body is positioned vertically. This shows that Adam is very tense and bothered by the situation at hand because he is leaning his head on his hand as if he is in deep thought, and he is standing up very straight indicating that his body is tense. This is important because it shows Adam’s loyalty to God by depicting Adam as not being convinced into accepting the fruit easily. In contrast, Facchetti’s painting illustrates Adam as having a slouched and, relaxed posture as well as having him leaning his right elbow on a rock to support his body. This shows that Adam is not worried by the situation he is in because he is very relaxed and leaning on a rock as if he is comfortable and unbothered; not even giving thought to the fact that Eve is trying to give him the fruit when Gold told him not to go near it. This is important because it depicts Adam as not being upset that Eve is handing him the forbidden fruit, so Adam is not being as loyal to God by not immediately rejecting the fruit from Eve. To add on, in Barry’s painting Adam is grasping the fruit in his
