As stated in the book, “college students have much to teach about sex” (8). That is because the values, ideologies, and worldviews of the students are representative of greater American culture. Although flawed, hookup culture on American campuses hold the possibility of accepting a culture of inclusivity, care, pleasure, and freedom while also rejecting predatory behavior, racism, classism, and abuse. Dismissing hookup culture all together is blind to the reality that young adults are going to have sex, and since sex is non-negotiable, one’s aim should be to foster open dialogue and critical thought onto a future where everyone enjoys the ability to freely explore sexuality, sex, and gender on their own
For centuries, society has placed a remarkably large emphasis on protecting the young from the many perceived errors of growing up. Effective sex education is resisted in many locations across the country in favor of somewhat comical biblical suggestions for abstinence until marriage even while the majority of those targeted teens are viewing the world as a more and more sexual place. So many views are weaving in and out of teenagers' newly formed adolescent minds that any effective argument for responsible attitudes or analysis of sexual behavior in teens should be expressed with a certain minimal degree of clarity. Unfortunately, this essential lucidity of advice is missing in the short story “Where are You Going, Where Have You Been,” in which the misguided Joyce Carol Oates creates the character of Arthur Friend as a cliché personification of the inner demon of uncontrollably budding sexuality. Instead, the murky characterization of the antagonist presents nothing more than a confused and ambiguous view of the meaning of the story.

The second part of the essay is call for reform from the current state of sexual ethics as it relates to the most vulnerable social group– teenagers. I conclude that current christian attempts within sexual ethics are failing teenagers and suggest ways in which my ordering of sexual ethics might prove more effective.

Teenagers look up to the people in the media as role models, and if their role models are going around as if sex was an everyday thing, they will think sex is something they should partake in. If “16 percent of female and 12 percent of male [teens] had sex four or more times in the past month” (Abma 1), what can be expected in the next month as high school teens use more and more media and the media continues to be sexual? The fact of the matter is that “teens with the highest level of sexual content exposure are 2.2 times more likely to have initiated sexual intercourse” (Lagorio) than other high school adolescents with little to no exposure to the sexual media content.
Physiologists usually agree that the teenage years are among the most difficult periods in one’s life. Most teens are trying to figure out who they are, what they believe, and how they fit into the world around them. Beginning in the late 1970s, a whole genre of fiction, referred to as coming-of-age literature, emerged and serves, at least for many teens, as believable presentations of young people learning to navigate the difficulties of their lives, often fraught with feelings of rejection, seemingly unresolved personal turmoil, social problems, school and family issues, etc. Indeed one value of reading is to see and better understand some aspect of ourselves through studying others. The reading of SPEAK, a somewhat controversial book because of its subject matter – rape -, is a worthwhile endeavor in any middle school classroom and offers many valuable life lessons to young teens.
First, theories of adolescent development support the idea the primary socializing agents for most children are only parents because, they are the best providers of specific factual information and social skills training. Hence parents play a vulnerable role in the implementation of sex education. Schools and health professionals should acknowledge and support the critical role of parents in sexual socialization. Parents, in turn, should support schools in providing sex education by learning what the child’s school offers in sex education. Acknowledging, that sex education is a lifelong process and that parents are only one of the primary sex educators of young people, they should be able to answer the kids' questions about sex in a confident manner. Though it is one of the responsibilities many parents dread most. It is evident sexual education in schools can provide students with substantial knowledge and skills to make informed decisions for sexual behaviours (Mueller, Gavin & Kulkarni, 2008). That being said, there is a significant lack of acceptable sexual education being provided to adolescents throughout the school system. This in turn requires the majority of adolescents to turn to their peers and family members for information and guidance. The film The To-Do List demonstrates the shortage of sexual education provided in schools, and results in the main character having to seek external sources for information. The problem with turning to outside sources for information is that is tends to be unreliable. Without formal information and proper facts being provided, students truly do not understand most components of sex. This unawareness could result in unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections as well as other sexual health concerns.

Sexual education is one of the most important aspects to understanding one’s sexuality. By learning and studying sex, people can discover the pleasures and precautions that must be taken when they choose to become sexually active. Sex is a topic that is mainly communicated to adolescence by their parents, the media, or educational institutions. How this topic is communicated greatly correlates with the future action one chooses to take regarding their personal sexuality. One’s understanding of sex can also can determine whether one has good or bad consequences from their sexual activity. The following looks at my personal experience with sexual education, taught by my family, school, and influence from media outlets.
Today’s cell phone is the front line technology at our fingertips.
