It is evident sexual education in schools can provide students with substantial knowledge and skills to make informed decisions for sexual behaviours (Mueller, Gavin & Kulkarni, 2008). That being said, there is a significant lack of acceptable sexual education being provided to adolescents throughout the school system. This in turn requires the majority of adolescents to turn to their peers and family members for information and guidance. The film The To-Do List demonstrates the shortage of sexual education provided in schools, and results in the main character having to seek external sources for information. The problem with turning to outside sources for information is that is tends to be unreliable. Without formal information and proper facts being provided, students truly do not understand most components of sex. This unawareness could result in unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections as well as other sexual health concerns.

Mad Hot Ballroom, directed by Marilyn Argrelo, is a documentary about the ballroom dance program in the New York Public School system. The documentary follows the journey of fifth grade students as they learn how to ballroom dance, and enter a citywide competition. The children in the documentary express their perspectives on ballroom dancing, goals and inspirations, and what it is like to grow up in their neighborhoods. The documentary highlights the benefits of exposing urban youth to ballroom dancing (Agrelo, 2005).
The reason why teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted disease rates are very high is because these teens are not fully educated both physically and emotionally. In the article, “Teaching Teens about Sexual Pleasure” discusses how “sexually educators really need to start discussions from the more holistic viewpoint that sexuality is more than sex and that sex is more than intercourse”(pg.13) which is not that case in the public schools of Lubbock. In the film, when students approach the teachers about sex, who are to guide them through high school, dismiss the student’s curiosity and tell them that abstinence is the way to go. This gives Shelby more of the incentive to create a better sex education program because even teachers who live in that community have a strong Christianity background and are taught that same way. If Lubbock had a better program then, they can teach their students and faculty that sex is not an act but a behavior with a lot of grey areas.
The author starts off the chapter by writing about a man named Carl N. Karcher. He is known as the founder of the fast food restaurant called Carl’s Jr. He dropped out of school at the age of 14 and a few years later, his uncle offered him a job in a city in California called Anaheim. One of the themes is workforce because he was an employee for his uncle. He was a very good worker at his uncle's work place. He once spotted a woman who he was attracted to and he asked her out for ice cream. He soon changed his job and started to work elsewhere. Carl married the women (Margaret) a few years laters and they had their first child.

Anyone deciding to have sex must first think about all the risks involved. Kekla Magoon, author of Sex Education in Schools, says that “half of all teens aged 15 to 19 years old in the United States have had sex” (Magoon 64-65). It is currently not required by federal law for schools to teach Sex education and those few schools that do teach Sex education have the decision to determine how much information is allowed. Advocates from both sides of the Sex education debate agree that teens need positive influences in order to make practical decisions (Magoon 88-89). Opponents of Abstinence-only education believe it fails because it does not prepare teens for all the risks of sex (Magoon 64-65).
Teenage sexual activity is a major problem confronting the nation and has led to a rising incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and teenage pregnancy. The existence of HIV/AIDS has given a sense of urgency to the topic of sex education. The issue of sex education in schools especially in the formative years has been a subject of intense debate among parents, school officials, health scientists and religious authorities worldwide for a considerable period of time. Comprehensive sex teaching encourages promiscuous sexual activity as “a natural part of life.” Proponents of abstinence only education activists cite several reasons why this type of education is the best. It focuses on the upholding of moral virtues. They also claim that sex outside marriage hat is “encouraged” by the comprehensive sex education which as a result, has some emotional and physical downfall especially when done at a very young age. They blame the comprehensive sex education for failing to discourage premarital sex especially at this time when the HIV pandemic is busy devouring young people in various parts of the world (Deborah 2). From a young age, children are bombarded by images of the rich and the famous engaging in torrid public affairs or publicly discussing their increasingly active sex lives. No longer is sex education left to teachers and parents to explain, it is constantly in our faces at the forefront of our society. Regardless of sex education curriculums and debates about possible changes, children and teenagers are still learning everything they think there is to know about sex from very early on in their young lives.
