World is changing along with competencies in work and home environments are changing too. Learning content, pedagogy and environment must accommodate these changes. Balanced development of a child is important. They must be taught to understand the world around them to some degree and manage their daily life. The children must feel included, loved, understood and valued in their community. Uniqueness of every child must be understood and encouraged. There should be an active use of technology and children must be taught sustainable way of living. Along with cultural literacy, digital literacy including cybersecurity, privacy and cybersafety must be taught in schools. It is time to re-think the school culture. The ability to sustain attention efficiently and effectively on a primary task is critical to achieving their long-term goals of graduating. With the mobile phones and their makers and marketeers vying for the students’ attention, it becomes a struggle for students in class. As a result of this technology, with vast amount of information present at the push of button or a swipe of a finger, they process information competely differently from their predecessors. It is so different that it can change their brain structure and it is very likely that it has changed already, according to doctors. Along with it, their thinking patterns can also …show more content…
Overuse of technology has led to children having poor hand strength and dexerity needed to hold pencils. According to paediatricians at the Heart of England Foundation NHS Trust, compared to 10 years ago, children now are unable to hold pencils due to the lack of fundamental movement skills. This requires strong control of fine muscles in fingers and lots of opportunities to develop those skills in childhood. The right way to hold a pencil is in dynamic tripod where the thumb, index and the middle fingers work together to allow small coordinated movemets, which will then produce legible writing and avoid discomfort. At the present time, the nature of play has shifted from muscle-building play like cutting, sticking, pulling and building blocks to swiping on touchscreen phones and tablets. The paediatric occupational therapists who specialise in handwriting difficulties in children state that children who are only accustomed to tech gadgets are gripping pencils like how cavemen held sticks! They feel that this problem should be nipped in the bud, so that there are no long-lasting damage and that schools play a crucial role in identifying this problem at their
Technology and our exposure to it are changing our lives; of this there is no doubt. The issue regarding what form that change will take and the effects of it on our physical and emotional health, however, are more contentious, and experts’ opinions on it run the gamut. In “Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of our Era”, neurologist Dr. Richard Restak examines what effect technology has on our brains, and posits that technology, as well as the increasing demand on our brains to perform multiple tasks at once, is causing a decrease
Handwriting is a means of expressing language, just like speech. However, handwriting is not taught in school as much as in previous years. In the past, handwriting was taught as a precursor to reading and spelling. Today, students of all ages are rigorously tested on their writing skills, yet they are not allowed the time it takes to develop this skill. I remember writing in a Big Chief notebook, holding a chubby pencil, trying my best to make the curves and lines of the letters just right. When I attended elementary school, the teacher devoted at least forty-five minutes to handwriting each day. Handwriting should still be taught in school because it is an essential first step to reading and expressing one’s thoughts and feelings and because of its impact on higher education.
“There are almost 180 million cell phone users and it is rapidly expanding” (Betancourt). Nearly every student in the United States owns a cell phone. Cell phones have been around for forty years. The first cell phone was placed by Martin Cooper in 1973. Cell phones become increasingly popular as the twenty-first century technology becomes more advance. People in younger generation rely on cell phone to accomplish basic needs. Some even becomes addictive to the cell phone. For example, I have a cousin who considers cell phone as an important part of her daily life. If I ask her to put away her cell phone, she would complain “I can’t live without my cell phone.” Cell phone should be prevented from using excessively because if cell phone is used in an improper way, it would ultimately becomes a distraction device for students. Therefore, students would be lack in interpersonal relationship, distracted during class, which can lead to academic failure, and distracted while driving, which can lead to serious accident and death. The negative impacts of cell phone on students are significant matters that need to be addressed.
Handwriting is essential in today’s society. Learning to handwrite helps improve motor skills, memory, and comprehension. These skills are necessary for students’ success in school and in their future. Due to technological advancements, schools deem such handwriting unnecessary. This is not practical, but it is.
In Annie Murphy Paul’s article “The New Marshmallow Test: Students Can’t Resist Multitasking,” she discusses how preoccupied students have become by technological distractions. Psychology Professor Larry Rosen conducted an observational study of students in which they were instructed to study for a period of 15 minutes. Despite being aware that they were subjects in a study, students’ attention to the work they needed to complete started to drift approximately 2 minutes into their study period. (Paul 1) Paul explains that the consequences of this inattentiveness to the task on hand results in students’ education suffering in terms of what they master and retain. Research has proposed that our brains work differently converting and accumulating knowledge when we are preoccupied with more than a solitary complex task. Concentration on excogitating can be accomplished by building up to extended periods of attention and the removal of high-tech interruptions. Rosen proposed, “tech breaks” to wean students off of constant device usage. These breaks consist of the removal of any distracting devices and then focusing on tasks for gradually increasing amounts of time. (Paul
One of the points that I would like to add to is that good handwriting makes the young learner to use his hands properly. Some people would say that they can learn from other different things. Truthfully, for a young kid what is the easiest thing he can try to learn from how to use his hands, it’s surly not a knife or a scissor both are dangerous for kids. And surly not carving, it’s a very hard thing to me and many other people too. Only professional carvers can.
Cursive in School “When children are exposed to cursive handwriting, changes occur in their brains that allows a child to overcome motor challenges” -Dr. David Sortino psychologist and current director of Education Strategies (3). On average a child in the United States learns cursive in the third or fourth grade. Students practice day in and day out perfecting the loopy writing style.
Many students are not being taught cursive in schools now that the common core does not require cursive in over 41 states current curriculum. If things are kept the way they are, kids may not have a vital part of our history, which is the art of cursive handwriting. This is a very big conversational topic within the United
Students today are being brought up with wired and wireless distractions. (Richtel, November 2010). More and more students have cell phones, smart phones, and video games. They constantly simultaneously use multiple personal electronic devices to do such things as texting and updating their Facebook pages. The result of the constant fight for their attention has resulted in what former Microsoft executive Linda Stone calls "continuous partial attention."
The question of young people, cell phone use and texting causing young people to be less able to concentrate and focus has always been a difficult one to answer. Technology gives teenagers so much but includes many drawbacks. Cell phone use and texting has it’s advantages such as teachers embracing tech, uses for educational purposes, and easy to use;however, some drawbacks are as socializing, time away from homework, and bad communication skills. The first advantage would be teachers embracing tech in the classroom. Teachers embrace tech as a teaching tool in a way the students will understand.
Pencil-grasp: Refers to how effective the child is at holding the pencil, therefore producing pencil generation appropriate to the child's age.
Mobile phones have various negative effects on a teenager's life and their life style. It can affect the student's in many ways. It can lead to health related problems, academic distractions, exam malpractice and change in behavior of teenagers. Reserches have shown that a mobile phone can cause an increased risk of acoustic neuroma and glioma in teenagers (Ravidchandran, S. V., (2009)). It can also cause ipsilateral , this is a tumor caused on the side of the brain where phone mostly held. It is highly risky for a teenager's health, as it is their growing period of time. Mobile phones are also known as a cause for academic distraction of students. Students tend to carry mobile phones to schools. Due to which they tend to use mobile phones during their lectures, they listen to songs, watch videos, play games ,chat with their friends online, etc. which makes mobile phones act as major source of distraction in a student's life . The students don’t conce...
When I was taught to write, to the horror of my kindergarten teacher, my first instinct was to use my left hand. I had no comprehension of why she reacted so badly when I picked up my pencil with my left hand. She immedi...
Technology has rapidly changed over the years and has expanded our infrastructure greatly. In particular, as technology advances the education system adapts to the many changes. The world of technology brings about many new improvements and shows no sign of slowing down. Many people spend their day to day lives utilizing the great aspects of technology doing almost anything imaginable. Through technology teachers and students can connect and expound upon the many fields of education. Technology is an ever growing aid in education that has increased awareness, communication, and accessibility. How is technology shaping education? The uses of mobile devices and applications have shown a great influence in the education system.
The Importance of Technology Education in Schools The education world has been greatly influenced by rapidly changing technology and the increasing availability of information. Schools have advanced by leaps and bounds when it comes to incorporating technology into the learning environment, however, many more advances need to be made. In all areas of the country, educators are trying to help students keep up with technology, but there are more changes that are essential to preparing the next generation for the future. By increasing computer usage by students, installing classroom Internet access and providing instructional classes dedicated to software and hardware education, schools have tried to provide an up-to-date education for students. This is all very important, but is it enough?
