Cursive in School “When children are exposed to cursive handwriting, changes occur in their brains that allows a child to overcome motor challenges” -Dr. David Sortino psychologist and current director of Education Strategies (3). On average a child in the United States learns cursive in the third or fourth grade. Students practice day in and day out perfecting the loopy writing style. Some kids achieve success in cursive in the first few weeks. Cursive even brings joy and confidence to some kids. Generally as one grows up they only use cursive to sign their name if even that. Not only did Albert Einstein use cursive to write his world renowned equations, but “the college board found that students who wrote in cursive for the essay portion of the SAT scored… higher than those who printed” (Sortino 1). This is due to many reasons, first being cursive is easier and faster to write because you don't have to lift your pen or pencil writing every small letter. Second being that because it is faster students can do more thinking and can spend more time coherently processing and answering the questions. The SAT in itself has been redone within the past few years with large new writing sections that are causing the amount of perfect score to decrease exponentially (Tamar 1). Because writing is so evident and important in the SAT and many other big tests it is important to write fast and strong. However this is untrue Time Magazine says “American institutions still require signatures for things!” (Steinmetz 1). As an adult one needs to sign their name to endorse many important legal documents, besides that it helps improve children's motor skills. Many critics also say that schools should not teach cursive and should instead focus on more important things like math and science. They say any schools are dropping to do just that. “ According to USA today, 41 states no longer require students to learn cursive” (Tarshis 1). Yet this does not mean that schools are not teaching it, it just means it is not required. Schools should teach it because of the reasons above. There are many more pros than cons to writing and learning
