When I first learned to write, it was 2000. I went to a private school for four year olds and while we were anticipating naptime, our teacher had something else in mind. She instructed us to write cursive and we responded with confused looks on our faces. Even at this young age, I could already clearly tell I was different than everyone else; my parents had established that I was going to be getting a higher education. And to get this higher education I would have to excel in reading and writing. I lived in a strict household throughout my childhood. This memorable moment happened while I was living in Hawaii. No longer were my parents enforcing a higher standard; I wanted it for myself. I started to implement this higher standard onto myself when I tore my ACL my junior year of high school by doing therapeutic writing to help me get through that hard time. Therapeutic writing led to the immense development in my reading and writing skills. This goes to show that there is always something good that comes out of out of something bad. I first moved to Hawaii when I was around ten years old. At the beginning it was very calming compared to where I previously lived which was Maryland. I quickly realized I was one of the smartest students in my class. Due to poor infrastructure, the education was lacking in Hawaii. Instead of feeling like I was falling behind, like in Maryland, I felt like I was surpassing the norms of Hawaii 's education standards. After a few months of living in Hawaii, I started to become accustomed to the laid-back lifestyle. I did not read any books outside of class. I did not care about my grades as long as they were not a C. I went outside everyday and I played at the park just like what every elementary school kid did. When this happened, I always tried to be optimistic and come out of this injury with more than I went into it with. From not playing soccer for one year, I gained so much knowledge of myself just from writing in a journal that I still keep at my house. I read it from time to time and I can still see the progression of my writing since I started writing, to the last entry in that journal. This part in my life was beneficial because I now know how to write at a college level. Before I tore my ACL I couldn’t write to save my life. I was a horrible writer and thanks to tearing my ACL I improved drastically. If this part of my life were to not happen I would probably be going to The University of Hawaii at Manoa with the rest of my classmates because that’s what our education pushed us
In November of 2010, I was playing basketball in the fifth game of my senior season. It was just like any other game. However, I would soon find out otherwise. It was late in the game; I drove into the lane and got fouled hard. I was knocked so off-balance that I speared the floor with my knee. As soon as my knee hit the floor I heard a “snap” that I will never forget for the rest of my life. Little did I know at the time, that would be the last shot of my high school basketball career. Not long after my injury, I consulted a doctor. After getting an x-ray and an MRI, the doctor informed me that I had completely torn my ACL and would need to have surgery. An ACL tear can be a very devastating injury. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the four major ligaments within the knee. The ACL is one of the most commonly injured ligaments, injured by an estimated 200,000 patients each year. Of the 200,000 annual ACL injuries, surgery is performed in approximately 100,000 cases. There are many types of reconstructive surgery on the ACL. However, there is an alternative to surgery in the form of physical therapy.
I think that is why I was humbled because my situation could be worse. I became more and more appreciative and learned that my world wasn’t ending; my world was just changing. I learned that I had to adjust to change in order to position myself for future success. I had to see different perspectives and open myself up to new ideas. Also, I had to fully accept the fact that things were changing for me. I now realize that change is good sometimes because it introduces you to new opportunities and experiences. I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. When I’m writing, I’m free from that for just a little bit. Until of course, my hands stop typing or the pencil (no pens- never pens) stops moving, then I’m right back on the carousel that is my brain. Tearing my ACL may not appear to be a failure in most people’s eyes, but to me it was horrifying and a complete let down to myself, as well as others. I worked very hard in the off season and was prepared to be a varsity starter in the spring. The first game came upon us very quickly and I was ecstatic to be on the starting lineup. I had enormously high hopes and wanted to prove my worth to the team and well as the coaches. The game started out as a brutal battle against our greatest rival Walsh, of which many of the opposing players I once played with, but we all played our hearts out. While walking through the front gates of County elementary school, you see children of all ages playing while they wait for the school bell to ring. Walking to the classroom that I will be observing you see students with their parent’s line up waiting to get signed in. The students are to be signed in by a parent or guardian for safety precautions, and shows that the child was signed into school. As a visitor, I am to sign myself in, this shows I was in the classroom, at what time was I there, and reason for visiting the classroom.
This injury lasted the duration of my junior year, and I was unable to play. I remained a part of the team, going to every practice and going to every game, but it was during this time that I truly began to shift my focus toward being a student. My senior year, I was faced with a decision that resulted in me walking down to the athletic center that brisk fall morning. I decided that my days of playing baseball were finished. I personally do not enjoy writing like most people would feel about reading a dictionary. I am cautiously treading water with every word I type. I have always found writing to be a tedious process. I have never found ease in wording something the way I want to; therefore, it usually sounds so much better in my head. I’ve never considered myself to be comfortable with writing in general. For example, I always had a hard time telling if I needed a comma in a sentence or not. Sometimes it was obvious, but it seems more confusing most of the time.
My injury was an accident, but I viewed it as a failure. Not only have I believed I failed my team and parents, I thought I failed myself. Johnson of the University of New Orleans describes the different views of how language helps a person who has encountered a traumatic experience overcome and heal. Chapter nine, Pathography and Enabling Myths: The Process of Healing written by Anne Hunsaker Hawkins of Pennsylvania State University discusses how personal writing, such as autobiographies and biographies, promote healing in regards to illness. Both of these two chapters speak about writing in regards to healing, but chapter nine speaks about a specific writing that tends to be more effective.
For me writing is one of my favorite things to do. I enjoy how you can write something and look back on it and see how well you have developed as a writer. At the beginning of the semester my writing was all over the place and it wasn’t written as well as I would have liked, however, I feel that my supporting sources was something that was good in my first essays. I had hoped to improve my organization and my introductions and conclusions. I feel that I really did improve with both my organization and my introductions and conclusions, before taking this class I was an average writer, which I wanted to improve. My organization in essay before this class wasn’t as good as it should have been as well as my introductions and conclusions. I had hoped to become an overall better writer after taking this class.
Everybody has a moment or two in their life that they will remember forever in perfect detail. For me the moments that I will remember for as long as I live are the times when, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, and tore my anterior cruciate ligament, or better known as ACL.
