The first is an ordained authority appointed through rank and position in the organization. While accepted throughout society, it probably fosters the weakest form of leadership and does not promote collaboration or the development of leadership skills. The second, which more closely matches what I hope to become as a leader within the United States Coast Guard, is an organic leadership style. This leadership style relies on a flexible, adaptable, and collaborative approach toward decision-making and direction.
