The Five Teaching Perspectives accurately describe the different teaching styles and the Teaching Perspective Profile Test can be used to illustrate a person’s unique teaching style. Taking the Teacher Perspective Profile test was very new to me. I am new to the world of adult education and therefore, it was difficult for me to answer some of the questions because they were so new and unfamiliar to me. However, I imagined myself in a specific teaching context and tried to answer the questions. I imagined that I was teaching piano to a group of students and I felt I was able to better answer the questions when I put myself in a specific situation. With this context in mind, my dominant perspective was the nurturing perspective. The other perspectives …show more content…
However, when I read more about the perspective, it made sense that I fit under this category. About those who have a nurturing perspective, Pratt explains “…..instructors encourage their efforts while challenging students to do their very best by promoting a climate of caring and trust, helping people set challenging but achievable goals, and supporting effort as well as achievement”. I felt this quote was relatable to my teaching perspective because I try to individualize my lesson plans and focus on building therapeutic relationships with my students. I wonder if I was teaching in a different context or whether I had students who were older than me or a different age, would my teaching perspective be the same? I wonder this because I read that the nurturing perspective works exceptionally well with …show more content…
Generally my behaviour and attitude with my students reflects nurturers. According to Pratt the nurturing educators highly believe and accent the relationship between learner’s self-concept and learning (T’Kenye, 2005). Their strengths lay in caring for their students and supporting and encouraging their individual efforts in a trusting and respectful environment (T’Kenye , 2005). In addition, I really believe in emphasizing empowerment. I want to empower my students to use their education for intrinsic motivation purposes. According to Pratt (2005), the Primary responsibilities of a nurturing educator include “engaging empathetically with individual needs, promoting/enhancing learners self-esteem, guiding students through content to build confidence and promoting success in learning” (p.239). Nurturing educators also highlight respect, dignity and self-esteem as their primary commitment (T’Kenye, 2005). Challenges to Dominant
While reading the book Mindset by Carol S. Dweck I learned much about my personal learning style, the realization about how I work with others, and how much an attitude or preconceived idea can influence how I live my life. This also directly impacts my thoughts as an aspiring teacher. All of which have made me come to the realization that as a teacher I will need to be aware of not only my mindset but also be aware of how students can be influenced by their mindsets.
Throughout this semester of college, I have observed three separate Elementary General Music teachers. Each of the teachers had their own personalities that each reflected upon their teaching. They all came from different areas of study, but all still manage to be successful, each with their own pros and cons.
...child needs and deserves a secure, caring, and inspiring environment in which to blossom and flourish emotionally, intellectually, socially, and physically. It is my desire as an educator to provide my students with the learning environment necessary to motivate and inspire each and every one of them to become to their fullest potential. For myself, teaching is about giving; giving the students support and security, giving them respect and dignity, giving them opportunities to succeed and a quality education, and not only giving them my time and effort but also giving myself. Our society requires its children to not only receive a solid education, but that they are taught by a highly qualified educator who is sensitive to their individual needs and deeply committed to their success. I am such a person and will always strive to do the very best by my students.
As a person who was born and grew up in China, I had been intimidated by English writing for many years. Although I finished many English writing tasks in the past few years, I failed my Writing Skills Test one year ago. This experience seriously undermined my confidence, and thus I decided to take ENGL3000 to improve my academic writing skills. This English class helps me completely transform from a person who had no idea about academic writing to a person who have grasped the critical strategies to write proficiently. Therefore, I believe I should pass the English class and meet the University Writing Skills Requirement (UWSR) because I have made great strides in organizing the argument, developing ideas, and
My interest in teaching started at a young age. I used to watch my teachers in awe as they were able to find new ways to get their students involved and excited to learn. Their enthusiasm to teach was so inspiring. I would often find myself using that same fervor as I grasped each concept. I, then, was able to relay it to my fellow classmates as a peer tutor. To this day, becoming a teacher is a passion that flows through me. However, my enthusiasm and passion are not the only reasons I would be a good teacher. I aspire to see a student’s ability to grasp the knowledge they never before understood. I aspire to see a student succeed at something they never thought they ever could. I aspire to not only support students with academic skills, but also with life lessons about the value of community, pride in one’s own ethnicity, good citizenship, sportsmanship, and more. I aspire to play a fundamental role in ensuring that all students from all cultures and learning abilities have the opportunity to be guided in a positive learning
I could go on at length, discussing all aspects of my praxis as an educator, however, that would lead to a paper of excruciating length. These aspects of my teaching pedagogy that are delivered in this praxis statement are those that I feel strongest about upholding. It is important for educators to value their students and the perspectives and cultures they bring to the classroom. Student-centered education is what I find to be the key to great teaching, and overall, is the greatest way to allow students to value and grow through their own self-exploratory and self-directed education. Valuing and appreciating each of your students is what makes teaching such an enlightening, uplifting profession.
It is expected that the profession of teaching embraces many qualities of any other professional practice. Teachers must possess a combination of many qualities beginning with a strong academic background and wide-ranging knowledge. The National Framework for Professional Standards for Teaching (2003) it is the knowledge of students, curriculum, subject matter, pedagogy, education – related legislation and the specifically teaching context that is the foundation on effective teaching, and a firm foundation on which to construct well educated judgments.
In order to educate my students, they must first know that I respect and care for them and will do anything in my power to help them achieve. This is the career that I am choosing and I am determined to do my very best. Children these days need positive role models and someone that cares for them because school may be the only place they receive either. If they know that I am willing to help them and that I love them as people as well as my students, then they are probably going to be more apt to learn. Managing their behavior with an assertive discipline will be my objec...
While I do not teach in a classroom and do not plan to do so at this time, in regards to my job as a Career/Graduation Coach I am a nurturer, followed by social reform as my teaching perspective. My teaching perspective, nurturing and social reform both align to my philosophy of education, progressivism. The nurturing perspective is aligned for a student’s achievements come from the heart rather than the head. The teacher provides a safe haven for their student, creating a new stable foundation away from possible previous failing education stability. The nurturing perspective can lift students up to grow their independence and create positive reinforcement and discipline that students thrive for (Danhoff, 2012). The goal of the teacher is to encourage their students and create a rigorous learning environment to motivate their students to be their best. Social reform assists students in becoming better citizens. As a nurturer I want my students to grow and mature while learning how to be productive in society (OSU School of Education,
"The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as every child should be instilled with the wish to learn."
Writing a reflection and a summary of dozens of experiences is very challenging and demanding. I cannot count how many ups I had, yet I cannot deny the fact that I had some downs where I could transform them to ups. The year was full of challenges, excitement, fear and lessons. Each Wednesday I had mixed emotions. Every time I came to school I had the same fear and heartbreaks. In my reflection I am willing to compare between Adan at the beginning of the year and new Adan I became.
During this College Composition course, I came across numerous obstacles and educational involvements. Every factor of this course contributed to my overall learning experience. For starters, we often read out of our textbooks, “The Little Seagull Handbook” and “They Say I Say”. These books helped showcase proper writing techniques. In addition, we would have class discussions that everyone would participate in. This opened my eyes to different viewpoints that could influence my writing. I recall one class we had a debate over a topic and everyone had to choose a side to argue. Then when we wrote argument essays, even though they were on a different topic, it helped me view my topic in different ways. Lastly, the most helpful to my writing was peer review. We were told to read our paper out loud to our partner. Although personally I am quiet and dislike reading out loud, I found this very helpful. Instantly, my partner and I could find grammar mistakes that one may not pick up on while reading silently. Then we could also talk about other possible revisions for my paper. For every paper, we would have conferences with the professor. This was effective as well to have a professional giving corrections and ideas. When we would get back our graded rubrics on the assignments we completed, the instructor would leave comments to
Teachers play such an important role in a child’s life, sometimes being their only source of encouragement and support. As a teacher, I want to know my students – their personality, learning style, and academic level, so I can meet their needs and create the best learning environment possible.
As a future educator, I have many goals. My first goal would be to never overpower my students. Being a teacher should not be a job, it should be a passion. I will focus my classroom around the student’s needs, rather than my own. The classroom will revolve around the students. I will be their guiding hand through education. Another goal of mine is to have the students interact in a positive way. Social interaction is very important. As students combine with peers they share knowledge and learn how to solve problems. In the real-world, this what will happen. Whenever I can, I li...
At the end of the day or beginning of the school day, I communicated what I did with Ms. P to plan out better activities or lesson plans to meet each individual’s needs.
