My Philosophy of Education Do you know your ABC’s, 123's, or how to read? If so, give thanks to the teachers you have had and Horace Mann for establishing what we now know as elementary schools, where the preceding is learned. Without my teachers, this paper would not be possible and it is a known fact that good teachers are few and far between. I hope to be an exceptional teacher that will not only influence the lives of my students but also be one that is willing to learn from my students. Times have changed and so has education. Some teachers just do the requirements set forth to them half-heartedly now and only teach because they have to pay their bills, perhaps they do not want to go back to school to learn a new trade. I, on the other hand, cannot wait to have my own classroom and be in charge of cultivating their young minds because teaching can be one of the most rewarding careers that one can choose. My goal is to not only know the subject area I will be teaching but also have a firm grasp on pedagogy to the utmost. It is mind boggling to know that I will be doing the same thing Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle once done, teach others. In order to educate my students, they must first know that I respect and care for them and will do anything in my power to help them achieve. This is the career that I am choosing and I am determined to do my very best. Children these days need positive role models and someone that cares for them because school may be the only place they receive either. If they know that I am willing to help them and that I love them as people as well as my students, then they are probably going to be more apt to learn. Getting assignments done quickly and moving on is not the most important thing; getting them done while having fun and fully understanding the material, is. Also, I know that money is not the most important thing in life. Teachers I know, for the most part, live a good life. My family thought I should go into the medical field because “that’s where the money is” they would tell me. I would reply, “Yes, money is there, but my heart is not, it is in teaching.” I believe Theodore Roosevelt said it correct when he said, “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” I believe that teaching the young children of the world is definitely worth doing, because I know I will enjoy every minute and appreciate the fact that I am able to be a teacher.

Many researchers have found that, while individuals may be motivated to resist stereotyping and prejudice the initial stereotyping still occurs (Devine, Plant, Amodio, Harmon-Jones & Vance, 2002; Dunton & Fazio, 1997). Scott believes that the initial stereotyping is often coupled with a more controlled process, which can reduce the impact of such stereotyping on judgments, when perceivers are motivated and able to correct for the activated stereotypes thus playing an important role in decision-making (Scott, 2005).

My goal is to teach these children that they can have self-esteem, skills to excel in school and have the confidence they need to succeed in life. Some students do not learn the same way as their peers. We have to modify and try to explain things to them that they can understand and comprehend. I listen to my students. I allow time for their individual impute in what they are learning, and adjust accordingly. I really believe that is why students can be so into the idea of being taught, because they are all encouraged to lead the discussion and projects before them as it relates to the curriculum. I try to learn from my students by listening to their interpretation. I am learning what interest them, and feed off of it in the work that needs to be performed. As my voyage to reaching my goal of becoming an educator nears its final stages, I am becoming even more eager to finally be able to do what I’ve been dreaming of doing for practically my entire life. I know that my immense patience for children will be beneficial to my future students. I know that I will make a difference in their lives. I know that I will be a valuable member of whatever school in Lee County that I teach at.
In this study, we looked at two independent variables, consisting of the stereotype threat variable, and the race. It is a 2x3 between subject factorial design with 2 levels of the stereotype threat variable and three levels of race. Presenting it as an intelligence test or cognitive ability test stimulates the stereotype threat, triggered by making their athlete status salient, and the race variable is divided into African- Americans, European-Americans, and Europeans.
As children we have many goals and dreams. Eventually, the time comes when we have to make a career decision based on our interests and goals. The choices that we make now will have a lasting effect on our lives. Like most college students I have explored many career options, but I am always lead back to the education field. Teachers have a very difficult job because they have the power to shape and inspire our future nation. Although that can be an intimidating and often scary thought, it also gives me inspiration to move ahead in pursuing my goal of becoming a teacher. I have always had a passion for children. There is nothing like watching a child grow and watching their mind expand as they learn. Teachers play such an important role in a child’s life. They are often the only one who is there to encourage and support them. If I can make a difference in only one child’s life, then I will have fulfilled my purpose of becoming a teacher.
The study reveals that stereotype vulnerability—the tendency to expect and be bothered by prejudice and to be affected by stereotype threat—creates barriers to developing a stable conception of one’s academic abilities. A famous author once said, “When you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.” There is truth in that statement when we look at the nature of humans today. Today’s society is filled with people who are wondering around with no purpose or direction in life. People today are content with this helpless lifestyle and so generation after generation will continue until the society has no leaders. I attribute this directly to the education of these individuals. As a future teacher, I must look at what the nature of students has become, the nature of knowledge, and ask myself why we have public education. In order for me to be an effective educator, I must reevaluate my philosophy of education and what it means to me.
Stereotypes have burdened society since the beginning of time through their blunt suggestions and detrimental consequences. In many ways, stereotypes are helpful because they inform people of the dangers that they could put themselves in during certain situations or around certain people. However, many individuals and groups have a difficult time understanding that while stereotypes are based in some truths, they do not equally apply to everyone of a particular race or gender. Stereotypes create a feeling of tension and distance that is toxic to society. Therefore, stereotypes are both useful and useless; they allow people to implement caution in possibly dangerous situations, but they also prevent numerous positive interactions in public and
I believe that education should be looked as as a desire to acquire all possible knowledge, not as a requirement or something that can be formally examined by standardized tests. There are numerous ways that children learn and I want to be able to encourage as much learning as possible for each child. I believe that using many methods of instruction is the most effective way of teaching to these various ways of learning. These methods include group work, hands-on activities, buddy work, etc. Assessment of children should follow the same idea. When children get the chance to perform on different assessments, they can adequately show their strengths and weaknesses. I do not wish to rely on tests only to assess the students in my class. Some types of assessment that I think should be inlcuded in a classroom are journals, presentations, projects and interviews. I also think that the classroom should be run with the help of the children. By distributing jobs among the children and everyone participating in the classroom, the students will form a sense of togetherness. This will eventually create a community within the classroom. I feel that this community of learners is essential for the students to perform effectively and efficiently. They will feel comfortable in the environment and will not be afraid to take risks or ask questions. The teacher will also be a member of this community and will not be seen as unapproachable or as the only leader.
As a future educator, I have many goals. My first goal would be to never overpower my students. Being a teacher should not be a job, it should be a passion. I will focus my classroom around the student’s needs, rather than my own. The classroom will revolve around the students. I will be their guiding hand through education.
