Student success is controlled by how our institutions, both social and educational treat and educate students. Students respond to what they are given and shown by teachers and other faculty members. It is up to these institutions to deliver the utmost in academic excellence. There are standards and certain criteria that teachers have to teach according to state policy and procedures, but ultimately it is up to the teacher to deliver the best education possible to the students of the future. Certain schools are delivering the best of the best education and that is where they base their theories. One that is truly committed to improvements in the educational system of the United States knows that progress can certainly be made in a variety of different aspects. I have studied this matter extensively and know that a lot of the criteria that teachers have to teach is truly outdated. I strongly believe that most of the information that is taught in school that is considered outdates is simply no longer useful. History lessons are a great example of this. I was taught so many things in history class that have absolutely no application in the twenty first century. The explanation for this being the case is truly simple. These people did not face the same environment that we face today with massive technological advancements now upon us. In opposition to my belief is the fact that some students simply do not want to make the most of their educational experiences. The textbook entitled “Learning and Leading with Habits of Mind” makes this clear when it says that “students often give up when they don’t immediately know the answer to a problem.” It is because of this quitting factor that some education is simply not effective. The book goes on to state that “some of these students have attention deficits and others write down any answer to get the task over with as quickly as possible.” These are the types of students that make the educational system not effective. It is not the education that is taught but how students respond to that education. In the traditional school system, there are these types of students all over the classroom. It is more than obvious that not every student in the class is completely committed to obtaining the most wisdom possible from a lesson. These students impact the entire environment of a certain class whether the teacher intends for that to happen
We live in a society where we are surrounded by people telling us that school/education and being educated is the only way to succeed. However, the school system is not up to the standards we want it to uphold. There are three issues we discuss the most which are the government, the student, and the teacher. In John Taylor Gatto 's essay “Against School”, we see the inside perspective of the educational system from the view of a teacher. In “I Just Wanna Be Average”, an essay written by Mike Rose, we hear a student 's experience of being in a vocational class in the lower level class in the educational system when he was supposed to be in the higher class. Both Gatto and Rose give their opinions on how the educational system is falling apart. There are many things that I learned from this reading, and many things that I was reassured on. Our country’s education system struggles a lot compared to other countries. We have an abundance of resources to further our education, but they are not used to challenge and prepare students to the best future they can have. As much as our country does not like to point fingers and place the blame on people, I think that it is quite obvious that the school systems as a whole, including teachers, parents and students are to blame. This country lacks the drive that other countries have in schools and we will be set back from other countries until we begin to change this.
Students are the future of our world, they really are. Society pushes them to “do well” in school for the knowledge, seeing as knowledge is power. But, how are we treating them in this modern era? How to help students who fail, or students who do not achieve up to a certain academic standard, is an issue that probably goes back to the beginning of levels of school for students to progress through. In the U.S. it goes back to the 1840’s where age-graded schools began. In those times children who did not meet a certain standard were retained, or they repeated that grade. Rates of grade retention are difficult to trace in the past as well as currently. In some of these illustrative examples, a state could reduce retention by half in thirty years. However, different states had different retention rates. In 1909 one Massachusetts school district had a 7.5% retention rate while a Tennessee had a 75.8%. “In the 1930’s educators recognized that grade repetition might endanger student’s social and emotional development, which gave rise to the practice of social promotion. As a result of this policy, students were passed on to the next grade even if they were not ready for the work.” (Alkin, 1114) Both social promotion and retention intend to rectify the problem of failing students. However, does either of these two methods succeed? If they do not then what does?

Education is a vital part of society. It serves the beneficial purpose of educating our children and getting them ready to be productive adults in today's society. But, the social institution of education is not without its problems. Continual efforts to modify and improve the system need to be made, if we are to reap the highest benefits that education has to offer to our children and our society as a whole.
Yet, the damage doesn’t stop there, in classrooms where the students haven’t fallen asleep the students usually develop a dispirited, and less engaging nature towards learning. The students are convinced that the suitable mode of learning is through the utterances of a teacher which, undoubtedly, leads to an excessive reliance on professors. Reliance on professors is not necessarily a detriment, but when it prevents students from seeking knowledge independently it transforms them into superficial learners who lack depth of understanding.
Is it the college bound student with a broad liberal arts education? Is it the student who graduates high school trained in a specific trade? Many in the field of education cannot come to an agreement on how our schools can best achieve excellence for and from our students. One of the many authorities who have contributed a model for what schools should be is Robert L. Ebel. According to Ebel, knowledge is the single most significant and most important goal in the education of children.
If teachers really care about making sure that a student is getting the proper education and learning what they need to learn, they would never say that or even have that mentality. They fail to realize that by putting less interest in helping the youths will only hold them back from moving forward to the next step. Also, the system suspends many kids out of the school because it is in the disciplinary code. Students that get kicked out of school for a long period of time start to miss out on school work and eventually start to fall behind and fail. When things like this start to happen, it only leads to the youth dropping out of school. It also leads them into a depressant mode. And depressant mode only leads to one thing and that is committing suicide. At this point in life, we cannot afford to allow the youth to stay away from school. In order for any youth to find a job they need their education and staying away from school cannot help that. There is punishment for every wrong action that a student may do, but keeping them away from school for a long period of time does not fix the situation because they end up missing work. Some students do not take the full advantage of public education. Maybe because of the simple fact that it is free they feel as if they can fool around with it. With the proper guidance and support, teachers can achieve academic excellence in the classroom. They follow their principal’s vision and share their goals. Teachers also serve as leaders in their classroom. They share their vision and goals with their students promoting positive attitudes in the classroom. Just like it is important for principals to respect and understand what their teachers need, students also need the support, understanding, respect and empathy from their teachers. When teachers demonstrate commitment in the classroom and set high expectations they raise the level of learning in the classroom. Teachers that work with the students and their parents to understand and meet their needs will achieve positive academic outcomes.
