Competitive sports can have tremendous positive impacts and benefits upon youth, although they are many people who hold supporting opinions there are also some thoughts that vary. They are many reasons that evidently show the positive impact competitive sports have on youth, which we will continue to come across. Some people argue that youth being involved in competitive sports can have a positive effect on their health and lifestyle in many ways. Others may argue that competitive sports open a great window for youth that allows them to be exposed to and learn many life skills, and traits that will benefit them in their daily lives now and undoubtedly in the near future. However, many people may support the idea that competitive sports lead …show more content…
Some skills may include teamwork/sportsmanship, time-management, perseverance, overcoming challenges, handling criticism, and failure. Teamwork is one of the most significant skills youth learn, to support this idea Kent Page McGroarty (2014) states, teamwork in sports promotes cooperation. Both children and adults can learn how to better cooperate with their teammates, even if they are not particularly fond of a teammate or two. Cooperation means putting differences aside for the greater good of the team, Kent Page McGroarty, (2014). Other life skills youth learn are goal setting, desire, and inner will, Anna Josephson, (2016) states competition helps us with goal setting. While setting goals and planning to reach them can be done outside of competition, competition helps provide deadlines and progress checks on our goals. Mango (2015) states, competitive athletes are consistently involved in situations where they are challenged. When this happens, their level of perseverance and determination will be tested. Others may say that competitive sports create stress, and pressure in a child's life. However, nevertheless, it turns out that while playing competitive sports youth learn skills such as time management, prioritizing, and putting in effort which all help youth …show more content…
There is no doubt that that competitive sports can have positive and negative impacts upon youth, but the fact that competitive sports can have a beneficial impact upon youth health, allowing them to have a healthy lifestyle just goes to show how important competitive sports are for our young and growing generations. Also, don't forget the fact that competitive sports allow youth to be exposed to an array of life skills which allow them to develop a great character. They also allow youth to be involved in their community, learn social skills, create more friends, and most of all increase their self confidence. Why should children not be able to play competitive sports with all the great benefits they achieve, and above all they get to express their talents and skills which will lead them to incredible opportunities. A first step towards getting involved in competitive sports is to go visit your nearby community recreation center and sign up for whatever may interest you. However, some may argue that competitive sports lead to injuries, creates stress, and has an excessive cost, but on the contrary competitive sports provide extremely safe equipment while youth play, and the guardian of a child is aware of all the risks while signing the contract prior to playing. Also, competitive sports don’t give stress towards
Youth sports are a staple in nearly every American’s childhood as highlighted in “Children Need to Play, Not Compete” by Jessica Statsky. Statsky makes two contentions in favor of this argument: first, that the participants of youth sports are not physically and psychologically ready, and second, that the mentality of win or lose is more harmful than helpful during the formative years of a child’s development. I agree with Statsky that children’s sports are too often over competitive, but some competition is beneficial to their development.
In the article, “Get Off That Couch and Play”, it states, “Students learn important life skills such as how to accept criticism, how to handle oneself under the pressure of competition, how to work hard toward a goal, how to win and lose graciously” (“Get Off That Couch and Play” 1). In sports, teens can learn how to accept criticism from their coaches, athletes have to learn that they do not do everything right and at some point they will get corrected by a coach and have to learn how to deal with that and accept it. Also, during middle school sports children learn how to handle themselves under pressure. A teammate may be pressuring them to work harder, or to score a goal and an athlete needs to learn how to stay calm while the pressure is riding on them. Furthermore, working hard towards a goal is taught throughout middle school sports because setting a goal you want to achieve is important to how you perform while competing.
Playing competitive sports affect young people in a good way. They are good because you have that commitment and now its hard to back down. In the "no" section of 'Have Youth Sports Become Too Intense?", it states "Intense training promotes self-confidence, self-discipline, and commitment." Student athletes can agree with all of this because it teaches discipline and a lot of other things. Parents can disagree with my reason, because they don't want their child to go through with intense training. They think it's way too much for the child.
In the essay “Children Needs to play not compete” Jessica Statsky talked on some of health, physical and psychological reasons children should not be allowed to indulge in competitive games or sports. She appealed to the parents and coaches or game masters on the implications and dangers of organised sports and She argued that competitive sports may harm teenagers both physically and mentally. Statsky in the book stated that sports generally are organised activity irrespective of how it’s being organised either locally or nationally or internationally. She also persuaded that both contact and non contact sports played by kindergarten have side effects on the children either as a competitor or as spectator; hence they should not be...
One of the many benefits of playing sports is the children will build character. Building character is important because with character they will obtain new friends and develop different skills. Playing sports at a young age can build character in many ways, “Playing sports at a young age enables children to participate in social interactions and build skills such as teamwork, leadership, and responsibility as they learn to work with others to achieve a common goal,” (Aspen Institute). This is a benefit because they will build character from learning how to deal with wins and losses from playing sports. Also, they will develop different skills. Developing different skills will build character because, “numerous positive developmental indicators have been associated with sport participation, including improved self-esteem, emotional regulation, problem-solving, goal attainment, social skills, and academic performance,” (Holt). This shows how when children play sports that some of them acquire different skills than others. Lastly, some of the benefits that the children will receive from playing the sports are obtaining new friends and developing different
Our society, in terms of world sports, has grown increasingly impressive. Most professional athletes have been playing their specialized sport since grade school, and although impressive, the people we are rooting for are wearing out quickly. Although youth sports programs are a health benefit to society, they also pose disadvantages to a young person’s growth and development.
In his book, Leonard states, “Many children are exposed to organized competitive sport early in life, and their success and failures may either enhance or jeopardize the self-concepts they develop” (219). As he implies, sports have a major influence on childhood development. Healthy exercise, discipline, time management, and social skills are promoted in sports and cause the success which enhances the child’s self-concepts. Despite arguments from those who tend to be left out when it comes to a child’s sports career, mostly friends from outside of the child’s sport or team, these skills are incredibly valuable in the adult world and I believe that a child benefits exceptionally from learning these characteristics at an early age. When these attributes are developed in a child’s experience of sports, the results can only be positive.
In the article "Have Youth Sports Become Too Intense?", the issue of whether or not sports are good for kids is debated. One side explains that it is not good, while the other is that it is. Even though they disagree on if it's too intense. They agree that it is getting more intense. The benefits in participating in competitive youth sports are worth the drawbacks because the pressure of the competition pushes you to do more.
The benefits of participating in competitive youth sports are worth the drawbacks because athletes learn discipline and responsibility and sports also help athletes make and keep commitments that they will make later in life. In the article “Have Youth Sports Become Too Intense?,” the issue of youth sports and if they have become too intense is debated. Children are taught to be respectful and to be nice to others. Students who play sports are better well rounded than those who aren't.
Competitive sports are a very hot topic right now, and people have different views on children participating in them. Some may think that competitive sports help children to be healthier, because they are very active during practices and games. Although this is a good reason, sports can lead to concussions and other dangerous injuries. The truth of the matter is that sports can be very dangerous, and they can lead to many other problems. Children shouldn’t be playing competitive sports because they can get concussions or other dangerous injuries, they can develop excessive amounts of stress, and they can develop poor attitude.
Engaging in sports plays a significant role in promoting health and wellness among children and adolescents. Although sports participation provides numerous physical and social benefits, it also has a downside: the risk of sports-related injuries. Many children and adolescents are treated in the emergency department each year for sports and recreation-related injuries. However, by playing competitive sports, you can keep obesity rates down, you can have a very strong mental health, and lastly, you can insure a healthy lifestyle for your future self.
Youth sports are not too intense. ”Still the benefits outweigh the costs. There are platitudes about teamwork and lessons about winning and losing”(Are youth sports too intense?).
For example, they teach kids leadership skills which are always a good skill to have especially when they are older and have a job. This is shown in source 2 “Do Sports Help Improve Leadership Skills?” By: Tara Duggan when it says, “People who play sports learn how to present their winning ideas to others, and improve their leadership capacity by listening to others”(Duggan Para. 5). This shows that youth sports teach kids how to communicate with others which is a big part of being a leader. This is shown again in Source 2 when it says, “By participating on a team, a player learns to develop strategies and work with his teammates to enable their victory”(Duggan Para. 4).
Confucius once said, "he who does not do well is less guilty than he who pushes too hard." People found that competitive sports are often physically straining and it is detrimental to proper emotional development. This blows away the misconception that competitive sports create a healthy and engaging atmosphere for kids. This and an overly strong obsession with winning create a toxic mix for the child’s wellbeing. People have begun to realize the world of competitive may be doing more harm than good for their children. Parents have also begun to notice that competitive sports often injure their children severely and also make the child feel left out, which in turn is detrimental to the child 's emotional health. Therefore, competitive sports
Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
