Vibrant harbingers, lulled by the silent sea breeze, serenade the ears of pedestrians with euphonious melodies foretelling life after death. Unseen by the naked eyes, they dance within the heathers that mark the entrance to the afterlife. Amongst the names of those who have perished in their soliloquies, was dear Aunt Helen who placed a ban of silence when she passed. Each person in her neighborhood subdued by the silence and imprisoned in their homes. Fortunately, there was one nameless fellow who had yet to perish. A naive man who longed to gaze upon the mysterious creature that lay before him. A creature with ivory fangs and monstrous physique that seemed impalpable. “Nevertheless, Eliot was unequaled by any other 20th century poet in the ways in which he commanded the attention of his audience.” (T.S. Eliot, Britannica School) To draw in his audience, Eliot described an instance of when someone had perished to invoke reminiscence over a time of a person’s passing that the reader may have experienced with a loved one. The aspect of nostalgia conveys the compelling remorse of the deceased felt by those who knew the deceased. In contrast to Dickinson, Eliot portrays death as a manner of anguish and sentimentality whereas Dickinson portrays death as a matter of resting in eternal peace. Each poem conveyed their theme in correlation to their writer’s background and style. The vivid use of imagery of a silent neighborhood and a moor filled with heathers provided the reader with a setting to be placed within to understand the aspect of the poem that the writer wanted them to feel. In addition to imagery, the use of repetition by Blake provided emphasis upon the main subject of his poem and the theme that he wanted to reveal. The themes of each poem helped to provide structure so that each verse flows according to the poet’s design. Furthermore, the themes provided a central idea for the reader to acknowledge. Emphasis upon the theme prevented the poem from becoming a bundle of vague verses with little meaning.
