In all movies – whether they are dramatic, romantic, or even comedic – there is a unique symbol that ties the movie together by highlighting one particular element. In Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, drowning emphasizes the increasing struggle of Robert Angier and corresponds with his increasingly sporadic decisions, making the audience empathize with the sense of panic he feels. First, from an analytic standpoint, it is important to recognize that the way someone feels when they are drowning is representative of Angier’s mindset after the death of his wife. This can be exemplified in the scene where he buries one of the Borden twins alive in order to apprehend the brothers’ secret. The fact that he would risk killing a human being in order to find out how to do a magic trick shows observers how utterly determined he is to achieve his goal of finding answers. He sets up a huge, elaborate scheme that has no guarantee of working, but he believes in it without doubt. The symbol of drowning also is applicable to this because the longer a person’s brain deprived of oxygen, the harder it becomes for them to think clearly and ponder the consequences of their actions. The fact that one feels like they are suffocating and are panicked is akin to the incautious nature of Angier’s actions as well. Once audiences become aware of this interesting parallel, they are able to further comprehend the escalation in Angier’s actions and understand his motives. As the movie progresses, Angier’s actions only become brasher as he tries desperately to create the perfect magic trick in order to frame Alfred for murder, much like how as one continues to drown they try with more vigor than ever to find a way to breathe. This proves that his obsession with trying to find closure has surpassed his control. For example, he never knows whether he or the clone will be the one drowning. For someone to risk their life once, let alone one hundred times, their motivations must be impeccable, but Angier plays this game of roulette because he hopes Alfred will try to figure out how he conducts his prestige. This recklessness shows that he was so troubled by the loss of his wife that he was willing to go to extreme and unwarranted lengths. This along with his malicious, desired effect causes audiences to attempt to delve further into the quest of understanding Angier’s character as he becomes even more impetuous than previously imaginable. He also limits his performance to one hundred times which shows that though he clearly does not want actually die, his need for closure has overcome all else. Likewise, when one is drowning they put all other thoughts and considerations aside in order to finally breathe despite knowing that if they breathe in water, the result will be considerably damaging. Viewers will be able to fully garner this impact if they understand that he feels he has no other possible options just as people who are drowning have no other option but to breathe. When someone finally does end up breathing, they unfortunately die.
When you consider, that drowning person’s goal is to breathe and Angier’s goal was to acquire closure for the death of his wife, the metaphor that drowning was representative of Angier’s life comes into full effect. As soon as Angier achieved his goal, he relinquished his life. This is directly consequential of his search of vengeance. If he had not set up Fallon and lead to him being hanged, Alfred would have never bothered to kill Angier. In fact, Alfred was the twin who proposed simply leaving Robert alone. As viewers begin to recognize this, they realize the full impact of his death. It also adds another stratum to the analogy of drowning. Since water is the reason, in the end the victim of drowning dies, it would only be fitting to equate Julia’s death to the water. Meaning, she, though indirectly, was the reason was the cause of Angier’s death. This may seem dubious at first, but one must consider that the reason any conflict happened was because Julia could not slip out of the knot she agreed to be tied with. When this comes to the attention of the viewer, they are forced to go back and reconsider every part of the plot – not just the scenes pertaining to the Bordens. The events leading up to Angier’s death are cast in a new light for them and his death is even more
impactful.
Hiding from those who would find him and carry out the wrath of vengeance upon him, the protagonist plans his escape. About to dive in the rancid water and swim for it, a body in the shallows abruptly stops him. The bloated and decomposing corpse pulls the narrator back from his adrenaline-induced frenzy. After a few moments, he settles and reflects, “I thought about him, fog on the lake, insects chirring eerily, and felt the tug of fear, felt the darkness opening up inside me like a set of jaws. Who was he, I wondered, this victim of time and circumstance bobbing sorrowfully in the lake at my back” (193). The narrator can almost envision himself as the man whose corpse is before him. Both deceased from mysterious causes, involved in shady activities, and left to rot in the stagnant lake water, and never to be discovered by the outside world. This marks the point where the main character is the closest he has ever been to death. Although he makes it out alive, the protagonist and his outlook on life are forever changed.

One symbol she uses consist of the roses that Miss Strangeworth treasures. The roses represent the love and perfection of Miss Strangeworth. The director’s use of techniques helped influence my understanding of the consequences of discrimination within society. Society discriminates against “in-valids” because they believe invalids aren’t as good as valids.
“The Swimmer” is an allegory that is narrated in third person point of view as someone who is observing Neddy’s journey. This enables the reader to discover the reactions of friends and neighbors as Neddy arrives at their homes while still revealing the shift of the round character’s own attitude and feelings as his journey through life continues. Cheever wisely tells the story from a perspective in which the reader can still be connected to Neddy from the beginning to the end of the story while learning how his actions have disappointed others and not just himself. It also uncovers the involvement of each character and their relationship with Neddy before and after his mid-life crisis. If this story was told from any other point of view then the reader would only be obtaining one sided, in a sense a close minded, version whereas with a third person point of view the reader is approached to the entire situation given all perspectives. It guides the reader from one meaningful piece to another on an even level without any bias impressions while the story is being delivered.
In John Cheever’s, “The Swimmer”, on a hot summer Sunday ,while sitting by the pool with his wife and neighbors, as they all complained about their hangovers, a man of higher status named Needy Merrill decides to get home by swimming through the pools in his county. When Needy first starts off his journey he feels young and enthusiastic; he is then greeted in a joyous manner by his neighborhood friends. Apparently, Needy is a well-known and respected man. As his journey progresses he starts seeing red and orange leaves; he then realizes that it was fall. In the middle of his journey he starts to endure some turmoil, but he does not let that stop his journey. As his journey ends, Needy starts to come encounter with some people who constantly mention his misfortune and struggle with his family. Needy does not remember any of the turmoil that had been going on in his life, and starts to wonder if his memory is failing him. Towards the end, many of the people that came encounter with treated him rudely. Needy realizes that something must have went wrong in his life. When Needy arrives home, he sees that his house is empty and that his family is gone. In “The Swimmer “, John Cheever uses setting to symbolize the meaning of the story.

In John Cheever’s short story, “The Swimmer” he conveys the transformation of the character through the use of the literary element of setting. The story begins in an American, middle class, suburbs. After what seems to be a night of partying and drinking. Neddy Merrill, the main character initially appears very optimistic; he has a perfect family, high social status and very few problems in his life. In spite of his age, he feels young and energetic therefore decides to swim across town through the neighborhood pools. However, his journey becomes less and less enjoyable as the day unfolds. The water become murky, uninviting and he becomes exhausted. Also the people in his surrounding become less cordial including his mistress who wants nothing to do with him. His voyage then comes to an end when he arrives to an empty, abandoned home. The central idea suggests that an unhealthy obsession with the materialistic aspects of life can lead to alienation.
The story’s theme is related to the reader by the use of color imagery, cynicism, human brotherhood, and the terrible beauty and savagery of nature. The symbols used to impart this theme to the reader and range from the obvious to the subtle. The obvious symbols include the time from the sinking to arrival on shore as a voyage of self-discovery, the four survivors in the dinghy as a microcosm of society, the shark as nature’s random destroyer of life, the sky personified as mysterious and unfathomable and the sea as mundane and easily comprehended by humans. The more subtle symbols include the cigars as representative of the crew and survivors, the oiler as the required sacrifice to nature’s indifference, and the dying legionnaire as an example of how to face death for the correspondent.

She returns to Grand Isle, the site of her first moments of emotional, sexual, and intellectual awareness, and, in a final escape, gives herself to the sea. As she swims through the soft, embracing water, she thinks about her freedom from her husband and children, as well as Robert’s failure to understand her, Doctor Mandelet’s words of wisdom, and Mademoiselle Reisz’s courage. The text leaves open the question of whether the suicide constitutes a cowardly surrender or a liberating triumph.

Peyote Hunt: The Sacred Journey of the Huichol Indians by Barbara Myerhoff is a very intricate text which involves numerous aspects of symbolism. Myerhoff not only applies a much deeper meaning to deer, maize, and peyote, but she also uses these objects as a representation of divine beings and spirits. The deer, maize, and peyote are very powerful entities but together they form the deer-maize-peyote complex, which is central to the Huichol life. The unification of these disparate objects can be easily understood once they are analyzed on three different levels: exegetical, operational, and positional.
In Kate Chopin’s short story, a woman named Louise Mallard suffered of a heart disease. When her sister Josephine reveals to Louise about her husband’s tragic train accident, causing his death, her reaction was bizarre. After she is notified about her husband’s decease, she goes upstairs and locks herself in her room. She sits on her armchair, looks out her window, and fantasizes about what her life will be like without her husband, Mr. Mallard. Shortly after, Josephine comes for her, thinking Louise will get ill about the news and they both walk down the stairs. To Mrs. Mallard’s dismay, the door flings open: Mr. Mallard was alive! Mrs. Mallard was in shock but mostly disappointed, for the future she dreamed of without her husband was ruined, and dies. According to the doctor she had died of the joy that kills. There is no doubt that Kate Chopin included an abundant of symbolic and ironic references in her short story “The Story of an Hour.”
With each analysis the reader gets a greater understanding of suicide and the mental state of those who commit it, as well as some of their motives. One could read only a single chapter of this book and gain a greater understanding than they previously had on the topic of suicide, but when one brings all the chapters together as a whole a much deeper understanding is obtained. Lester’s analyses start with diaries, using that of a girl he has called Katie as his first example. In this 14 page chapter he analyses her diary, not only comparing her to Ophelia from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, but using that comparison to show some of her motives and to make sense of them. It is this astute analysis that sets the tone for the rest of the similar chapters, in a way that is not boring but is not lighthearted in the slightest. The way that the whole book works together to give one insight on the topic of suicide makes it a useful resource for those who wish to understand it in a more in-depth way.
Within the context of film industry, the film Titanic by James Cameron belongs to epic romance/ disaster genre. The film, released in 1997, was a global box office hit because the director provided equal importance to history, fiction and romance. To be specific, one can see that the film’s plot is based upon the history of RMS Titanic. On the other side, the main characters including the protagonist and the heroine (Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater/Dawson) are fictional characters. Besides, the element of romance between the main characters (Jack and Rose) is the film’s main attraction.
