Walgreen’s is a drugstore that was founded in 1901 and has always prided itself in its level of service and personal attention (Walgreens, 2016a). In 2008, Walgreens opened its’ second distribution center in Winsor, Connecticut designed to employ people with disabilities. The idea was to develop a location that gave new job opportunities to people with disabilities as well as creating new processes, systems, and designs that would be able to be mimicked on all their distribution centers (Walgreens, 2016a).
In an effort to promote more disability inclusion, there are many tangible and intangible benefits to Walgreens, such as employee morale and enhancement to the company’s image and reputation.

As a performance indicator, this increase can produce faster product turnaround times, resulting in profits for Walgreens. Another tangible benefit is the possibility of tax benefits to Walgreens for hiring disabled people. According to an article via Business.com, the Social Security Administration offers tax incentives to companies that hire applicants who are receiving social security benefits (Cohen,2016). Being the first of its kind with updated technology and process changes, it has 400 employees with 40 percent having a disclosed physical or cognitive disability (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin & Cardy, 2012). This shows that even with higher percentage of employees with disabilities, the productivity can increase or stay the same. In the case of Walgreens, it has increased by 20 percent (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin & Cardy, 2012).
The Walgreens Retail Employees with Disabilities Initiative (REDI) is a clear example that managements investments in training. Training qualified candidates first and allowing people to meet the minimum requirement, regardless of a disability, allows for people to enjoy and strive to learn more in a working environment (Walgreens, 2016b). REDI works with community agencies to find eligible candidates. The training is the same across the board for all candidates. Upon hiring, all team members have the same job responsibilities, with the same
Since 1901, Walgreens has had a strong passion for customer service. The founder, Charles Walgreens, goal was to create a drugstore that was like no other. He said that for as many drugstores as he had worked at, he had never worked for one that had a focus for good customer service and low prices. Walgreens has grown by leaps and bounds since 1901 and is now recognized as the leader in the market with over 7000 stores. Charles Walgreen had an eye for good managers. He said he was able to pick people that he knew were smarter than him so to promote them and make them the heads of his drugstores. As a store manager, not only is it your job to run a store which includes ordering, customer care, and inventory control, but also it is your job to manage the staff. As a part of managing staff, it is their responsibility to hire, train and develop, and terminate if need be. While there are many jobs to choose from when it comes to HR and employee staffing, I choose this one because it is by far to me the most intense.

Nancy Mairs article, “Disability” (1987), explains that the world is trying to block out the fact that disability is known to be everywhere and how companies and commercial advertisers are trying to not show disabled people on their commercials so that is shows that everyone can use their product besides disabled persons. Mairs doesn 't believe this though, she believes that advertisers are scared to depict disabled people in the ordinary activities of daily life is to admit that there is something ordinary about disability itself, that it may
Administration is a support activity that is important to the entire value chain because it consists of many activities, including finance, accounting, legal, quality, and importantly information systems. As the pharmacy retail industry, information systems will certainly help the retail backward to its suppliers, demand forecasting and planning, inventory management, operating stores, and distributing information to the customers. Walgreens has seen the importance of this support activity and provided necessary support services, such as information technology, legal, construction, and facilities maintenance, as well as professional services that enhance Walgreens overall business operation and efficient execution ("Social Responsibility,"

Businessmen and private firms in particular have been against this legislation for the very start because they believe that it brings in unnecessary burden upon the firms. It is not financially feasible for them to hire individuals with disabilities and they see problems with prohibition of questions like ‘what can you bring to this organization?’ In fact, there have been some studies that concluded that this Act has led to higher unemployment rates among people with disabilities.
Me: First question is, basically I am doing this on the progress that disabled individuals when going to work for agencies like goodwill and ovr; places like that, to see how these individuals go from not really working their whole lives and being in a protective environment with their families to going out and working along with progressing not just on work skills but socially as well. Back to the first question; do you see the difference in disabled individuals when they begin work at goodwill industries to six months later; their very first
Historically, we have been taught that people with disabilities are different and do not belong among us, because they are incompetent, cannot contribute to society or that they are dangerous. We’re still living with the legacy of people with disabilities being segregated, made invisible, and devalued. The messages about people with disabilities need to be changed. There needs to be more integration of people with disabilities into our culture to balance out the message. Because of our history of abandonment and initialization, fear and stigma impact our choices more than they would if acceptance, community integration, and resources were a bigger part of our history.
Disability is everywhere; sometimes it is visible and other times it is not. When asked to look for it you can often find it in places you frequently visit but just never have paid enough attention to notice it. According to the world health organization disability is, “any restriction or lack of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered ‘normal’ for a human being” (2004). I currently work at a fast-food restaurant. The doors to this restaurant are not accessible to people with disabilities because they do not open automatically. One day while I was working, a costumer seemed to be having difficulties coming in to place an order, the problem appeared to be that he was unable to open the door while trying to operate his wheelchair. He was frustrated and seemed embarrassed because he required another costumers help to do the task of opening the door, which is often seen as a simple everyday routine. The costumer who was unable to come inside the restaurant is considered to be
Many employees claim low wages, no benefits, irregular schedules, and unreliable hours as some of the horrible working conditions they have to endure. Walmart employees put together different unions all the time to try and protest or strike about the wages, treatment and anything else that seems to come along with being an employee of Walmart. Walmart does not take well to these unions. Women of Walmart seem to have it the hardest though. As recently as 2013, despite the fact that women account for as much as 57 percent of Walmart’s U.S. workforce, women were paid $1.16 less per hour (Osterndorf). In an article about Walmart and how it treats employees wanting to take sick days, a woman in fear of losing her job at a North Huntingdon Walmart, went back to work even though she had doctors' notes and hospitalization recorded, which were both rejected by her supervisors, to excuse her from work due to a miscarriage. She was worried the she would get fired due to absences so she went back (Abrams). Walmart also does not give out good health care to its employees. There are many claims of Walmart cutting health care for employees or finding the cheapest possible solution for an employee's health care. In 2014, the company cut insurance benefits to its part-time employees (Osterndorf). In a New York Times article about health care called, Walmart to End Health Coverage for 30,000 Part-Time Workers, it stated
Today I was watching flipping through the channels on TV and came across a show on NBC called ‘Superstore’. I had never seen the show before, but it I decided to watch it. The show takes place in a big box retail store and follows the lives of the employees who work at the store. There was a character on the show named ‘Garrett’. Garrett was physically disabled and not able to walk; he was in a wheelchair, yet was able to work just like all of the other employees. The employees did not treat him differently because of his physical disability and he was able to adapt to the needs of his job just like any other employee would need to. I was surprised that there was a character in a wheel chair on the show- just like me. And I felt very
They also encourage employees to voice their opinions through the company’s Associate Resource Groups and town hall meetings. By removing barriers within the company leads them to empower more woman. Walmart employs more than 1.2 million woman and is working to build a company where every woman is empowered to realize their full potential (Next Generation). Although disseminating authority throughout the organization might improve employee morale, they still must have a high degree of control. They have to establish performance standards based on company objectives. Most employees don 't leave good companies, they leave bad bosses which is why Walmart strives for employees to have a sense of connectivity with the organization and provide a framework for what the future holds (Peterson).
This shows that many Canadians with disabilities have lower pay, fewer promotions and to live in lower-income households compared to Canadians without disabilities. One of the main problems for that there are many employers usually don’t employ people with mental or physical disabilities due to many challenges and the probability of inability to perform the essential job duties. Therefore, federal government is committed to introducing
They do not care if their employees are sick, or care to know about their situation. In fact Walmart has recently changed their FMLA policy to only care for a family member who is sick and not for an employee with a personal illness. Walmart no longer accepts a Dr's note if you are sick and miss work, they will fire you regardless if you have a Dr's note or not. You are expected to go to work sick as you are, and work as hard as you usually do or they will write you up. Americans are more interested in making money than they are interested in spending time with their family members.
