Throughout The Sword in the Stone by T. H. White, Merlyn and Wart become best friends, while still maintaining a teacher to student relationship. Merlyn is a magician, and the Wart found him while on an adventure with his brother, Kay. The Wart and Kay were in need of a tutor and with merlyn they found that (White 36-37). As the book is read, there are multiple displays of Merlyn’s tutorship and how he displays the quality of a good teacher. A good teacher is someone who understands their trade, has patience for their students, and invests personally with love for their student(s). These qualities are displayed throughout this whole book with every adventure, and every encounter Wart and Merlyn had with each other and other people. In order to be a good teacher, one must know the in’s and out’s of their trade. A good teacher must know about the subject that they are teaching. Traveling back in time allows Merlyn to know everything that has happened and everything that will happen in Wart’s life. He is able to know the exact lessons that Wart will need to become the king he needs to be. According to James H. Many of his new subjects were bringing him presents of all different sources. Many people from the castle he grew up in sent gifts, but the one Sir Ector sent was treasured over all. When the Wart opened the present from his adopted dad, he recognized it as a magician's hat. What happened next was unbelievable. White wrote, “When the flame had quite gone out, Merlyn was standing before him in his magic hat” (208). The reader finds out that Sir Ector’s gift to Wart had been Merlyn himself. Merlyn knew that once Wart had pulled the sword out of the stone, he would no longer be needed as a teacher, and he had to tell Wart. Merlyn also knew that he would be in Wart’s life after that, as long as Wart was accepting of
