Autism refers to a developmental disability, which is a low ability in communicating and interacting with others, it is shown in a verbal and nonverbal ways and also socialization skills.(Block, Block, & Halliday, 2006) Parents are desperate to find a treatment or therapy to cure their child who has suffered from Autism. However, the increasing awareness of Autism rises the supply of variable treatments which including those are not tested as safety or effective. Suzy Miller is one of the ‘therapists’ who claimed her treatment can help children within Autism and increase their ability. In my opinion, I believe the treatment of Suzy is pseudoscience or still has not being proved as scientific. In this essay, the features of her “new science” will be shown and the …show more content…
However, the healing of Autism is nearly impossible, and the ‘remotely’ treatment is absurd either. There is no proof of their treatments are tested and qualified. Most importantly, these sort of treatments are not only provided by Suzy and William. “One site tells parents they can "defeat the autism in your child" by buying a $299 book” (Shute,Nancy, 2010) Stephen points out that the demand of improvement in Autism create the market full of fraud and pseudoscience. (As cited in Shute& Nancy,2010)
Furthermore, non-falsifiability is another feature of this pseudoscience treatment, as i said before, there is no proof of effectiveness, but no one can also prove their broadcast or consultation is not useful. There are several studies have shown that the improvement of Autism is because of the changing in ages, Stephen also backs this point, he said the reason of improvement is not these alternative ‘treatment’, but the growing of children. (As cited in Shute& Nancy,2010) However, parents prefer to believe that Suzy and William’s treatment are helpful and

The short documentary video “Prisoners of Silence” focuses on neurodevelopmental disorders with a clear emphasis on autism. It further delves into the rather controversial method of treatment for autism known as facilitated communication, which was first developed in the early 1990s. The video follows the introduction and ultimately the downfall of such a treatment as controversy quickly ensues after a series of sexual abuse cases and ample scientific evidence are produced.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has two main core criteria, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fifth edition (DSM-5). The first of the two criteria is ‘Persistent Deficits in Social Communication and Interaction across Multiple Contexts’ under which there are three categories. Every year doctors diagnose thousands of adults and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Due to the growing awareness of autism and recent developments in technology, scientists and doctors can now discover and observe the effects of autism on society, and people. Starting with its discovery, researchers have been able to diagnose people more effectively. Doctors are beginning to discover what causes this disorder, and are currently trying to find ways to prevent and treat it. Many places have opened their doors to people with this disorder, creating autistic friendly environments where people are patient and understanding. Schools have also become accommodating to autistic children and adults. Autism also puts great strain on family and home lives.
Autism is a life changing experience for a person. With all of the research and studies that are being done, the theory that vaccines are the cause of autism has not yet been determined. Autism can be caused by many different things and shouldn’t blame one individual reason. The exact causes of autism may never be discovered, but with all of the studies being done scientists should find out every little detail about this disability, including a cure. The day autism is cured will be the day every child struggling with this defect will be able to start a normal life, and that day will make history.
Understanding autism, which is professionally known as Autism Spectrum Disorder, otherwise known as (ADS) can be a difficult task, especially for someone who is not trained in helping persons with disabilities. He names the spectrum disorder after the Greek word autos, meaning of or for oneself, due to the way the child display social avoidance. Many doctors’ believed in the past that autism was caused by the way the mother not caring for her child properly or ignoring him or her. There was also a time when it was thought to be caused by certain environmental stresses that cause neurological issues within the brain. Autism is one of the most misunderstood

I also believe that the placebo effect plays a major role in autism. Like any other mental illness if you think you have a mental illness you will have a hard time overcoming it. If people tried their best to overcome autism maybe they would succeed. If people reirected their negtive thouhts to positive thoughts most likely they would have a easier time facing it. What I am talking about is a mindset.
Also, the study noted that autism is a rare condition (Page 37). In 1985, it was rare, with only 4 in 10,000 individuals being diagnosed; today, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that number is 1:68, much less rare. Further reducing the scarcity of autism is the prevalence of exposure to the condition. I rarely meet a person today who doesn’t know of someone with autism, and every TV network and movie producer has tried to incorporate autism into their
