Because altering reality can be created in so many different forms, artists from the turn of the 20th century have been altering reality in magnificent art works. Artists are able to physically alter our reality and how we perceive reality through their manipulation of visual language; telling the untold, speaking the unspeakable and transferring the viewer to a mythical imaginable universe where anything can happen. They created a way to escape the real world, a place where the audience can relax, and feel peaceful.
Two remarkable and well-known artists that alter reality are Salvador Dali and Alex Andreev. Dali’s well known surrealism art works appeared in the late 1920’s and are iconic for this period. Dora Ades said of Dali’s artworks “Surrealism advocate[s] the idea that ordinary and depictive expressions are vital and important, but that the sense of their arrangement must be open to the full range of imagination.” (Ades, D. 2001 pg. 35) Andreev’s art works are a contemporary twist on surrealism and are contrastingly bright and energetic. Both are successful in altering reality as they manipulate the audience’s reality physically and mentally as they use out of place objects, physically impossible themes and intriguing ideas.
After WW I the people craved for something to ease their minds from the sorrow and suffering and reality of war. The surrealism movement intended to create art; literature and philosophy that was soothing to the soul and helped them forget or alter the reality they were living in. There was also developments in the study of the human mind by Sigmund Freud that opened up ideas about imagination, which inspired many artists such as Dali.

Artists are masters of manipulation. They create unimaginably realistic works of art by using tools, be it a paintbrush or a chisel as vehicles for their imagination to convey certain emotions or thoughts. Olympia, by Manet and Bierstadt’s Sierra Nevada Mountains both are mid nineteenth century paintings that provide the viewer with different levels of domain over the subject.
Surrealism started as a Cultural movement in the 1920’s. It began with writings as well as visual artworks and was a way to express dreams imagination. There was no control on Surrealism and left artist to create art how they feel. Surrealism had similarities to Dadaism such as its anti-rationalist view. Surrealism was founded by Andre Breton, in Paris, 1924 after he created a manifesto of the art movement, the manifesto describes surrealism as “Psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express…absence of any control…exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern” which puts emphasis on the ‘dream’ aspect of the movement. violence and change. Artists who worked in traditional media such as painting and sculpture, and in an eclectic range of styles. Some people went with the movement while others opposed it. I enjoy the different types of eclectic movement in art such as the paintings, drawings and the designs. It was not until 1911 that a distinctive futurist style emerged and then it was a product of Cubist influence. Futurism was not immediately identified with a distinctive style. Futurists were fascinated by the problems of representing modern experience, and strived to have their paintings evoke all kinds of sensations and not merely those visible to the eye. Futurist art brings to mind noise, heat, and even smell of the metropolis.

My first artist is Rafael Cauduro. Rafael Cauduro was born in capital city of Mexico and now resides in the city of Cuernavaca (state of Morelos) 1950. Rafael started out making superior studies of architecture and industrial design in the Latin American University in Mexico City. According to his biography Cauduro is a self taught painter who steps outside of traditional artist’s standard. Cauduro’s paintings contain a “trompe de l’oeil” (Fool the eye) quality as indicated in by how in his paintings walls, fences, and objects are so real that people can almost touch them. To the visual realism of Cauduros work, according to critic Ruiz Soto, adds what he termed “critical illusion” which combines an extreme technical proficiency with fantasy-filled concepts(www.rafael cauduro.com). Surrealism, who has not heard this word nowadays? World of the dreams and everything that is irrational, impossible or grotesque, a cultural movement founded immediately after the First World War and still embraced nowadays by many artists. In order to understand it better it is necessary to look deeper into the work of two outstanding artists strongly connected with this movement, and for whom this style was an integral part of their lives.
From the creation of art to its modern understanding, artists have strived to perform and perfect a photo realistic painting with the use of complex lines, blend of colors, and captivating subjects. This is not the case anymore due to the invention of the camera in 1827, since it will always be the ultimate form of realism. Due to this, artists had the opportunities to branch away from the classical formation of realism, and venture into new forms such as what is known today as modern art. In the examination of two well known artists, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock, we can see that the artist doesn’t only intend for the painting to be just a painting, but more of a form of telling a scene through challenging thoughts, and expressing of the artists emotion in their creation.

Modern art serves to immerse us more thoroughly in a scene by touching on more than just our sight. Artists such as Grosz, and Duchamp try to get us to feel instead of just see. It seems that this concept has come about largely as a way to regain identity after shedding the concepts of the Enlightenment. “Philosophers, writers, and artists expressed disillusionment with the rational-humanist tradition of the Enlightenment. They no longer shared the Enlightenment's confidence in either reason's capabilities or human goodness...” (Perry, pg. 457) It is interesting to follow art through history and see how the general mood of society changed with various aspects of history, and how events have a strong connection to the art of the corresponding time.
The German Expressionism movement started in the early twentieth century art world, pre-WWI, presumably from Vincent Van Gogh’s “pioneering expressionist paintings like… Starry, Starry Night”(Encyclopaedia of Art History). It was a purely aesthetic movement at this time that sought to oppose the Impressionist movement, which imitated nature, by imposing unnatural, distorted images. Aspects of those distortions served to convey the emotions an artist held towards their subject. War brought terror. War brought mental meltdowns. The artist of the Surrealist movement strives to take everyday objects or thoughts and turn them into dream-like, unrealistic paintings. Salvador Dali and Vladimir Kush are two great Surrealist painters. Dali and Kush created many different paintings, but they did create similar paintings such as: Dali’s The Ship with Butterfly Sails and Kush’s Fauna in La Mancha. The best of the two surrealist paintings has yet to be named.
Surrealism and the surrealist movement is a ‘cultural’ movement that began around 1920’s, and is best known for its visual art works and writings. According to André Berton, the aim was “to resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality” (Breton 1969:14). Surrealists incorporated “elements of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and ‘non sequitur”. Hence, creating unnerving, illogical paintings with photographic precision, which created strange creatures or settings from everyday real objects and developed advanced painting techniques, which allowed the unconscious to be expressed by the self (Martin 1987:26; Pass 2011:30).
Paintings, like many forms of art, are very subjective—what one may find intriguing another may completely disagree. “Art is physical material that affects a physical eye and conscious brain” (Solso, 13). To glance at art, we must go through a process of interpretation in order to understand what it is we are looking at. Solso describes the neurological, perceptual, and cognitive sequence that occurs when we view art, and the often inexpressible effect that a work of art has on us. He shows that there are two aspects to viewing art: nativistic perception—the synchronicity of eye and brain that transforms electromagnetic energy into neuro-chemical codes—which is "hard-wired" into the sensory-cognitive system; and directed perception, which incorporates personal history—the entire set of our expectations and past experiences—and knowledge (Solso, preface)
Judging surrealist work is important for art’s history. New techniques were developed and were used among the artists. The artists were also able to influence one another with their artwork. New ideas and ways to look at art were created. People were able to learn a lot through surrealistic art.
