Surrealism started as a Cultural movement in the 1920’s. It began with writings as well as visual artworks and was a way to express dreams imagination. There was no control on Surrealism and left artist to create art how they feel. Surrealism had similarities to Dadaism such as its anti-rationalist view. Surrealism was founded by Andre Breton, in Paris, 1924 after he created a manifesto of the art movement, the manifesto describes surrealism as “Psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express…absence of any control…exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern” which puts emphasis on the ‘dream’ aspect of the movement. Dadaism is a European artistic movement that went from 1916-1923. It is a movement in art, literature, music, and film, repudiating and mocking artistic and social conventions and emphasizing the illogical and absurd. This movement flouted conventional artistic and cultural values by producing works of art that were marked by nonsense, travesty, and incongruity. The word dada has many meaning in different languages so it is impossible to know which language the art movement name was based from. As the science of technology rose into entertainment, not even Hollywood could compete with the new stars of animation. The first broadcast ever was in 1928 and the technology used for the broadcasts consisted of a turntable, which was solely used to be the base for the Felix the Cat figurine and propped him up for the shoot; studio lights, which helped transmit the picture and they also needed to be constant; an actor was needed and had to be impervious to heat, cheap, and also constant. In turn, the use of a Felix figurine was perfect for the job not only because of these reasons, but also because the picture was black and white, and Felix was a black and white cat. A scanning disk was also needed since it was the part of the equipment that actually made the broadcast, so was an electric kinescope receiver and a rotoscope. A rotoscope was needed to trace images of the characters on paper frame by frame and was invented by Max Fleischer in 1915. Surrealism in the 1920s was defined as a fantastic arrangement of materials that influenced Miró, due to the fact that he was one of the most original and sympathetic artists during the Surrealism periods. Miró was born into the Catalan culture in April 20,1893 in Barcelona, Spain (Munro 288). Having to be born into the Catalan culture gave Miró an opportunity to have an intense nationalist activity. In which much attention was paid not only to political expressions of the need for autonomy, but also to the re-Catalanizing of every day life (Higdon 1).
Surrealism, who has not heard this word nowadays? World of the dreams and everything that is irrational, impossible or grotesque, a cultural movement founded immediately after the First World War and still embraced nowadays by many artists. In order to understand it better it is necessary to look deeper into the work of two outstanding artists strongly connected with this movement, and for whom this style was an integral part of their lives.
The 1920's were times of cultural revolution. The times were changing in many different ways. Whenever the times change, there is a clash between the "old" and the "new" generations. The 1920's were no exception. In Dayton, Tennessee, 1925, a high school biology teacher was arrested. He was arrested because he taught the theory of evolution. The teacher, John T. Scopes, was accused of having violated the Butler Act. This was a Tennessee law that forbade the teaching of the theory of evolution in public schools. The Tennessee legislature felt that teaching evolution was wrong because it contradicted the creation theory of the Bible. The Scopes trial received worldwide publicity. The press nicknamed it the Monkey Trial because, people believed that the theory of evolution meant that humans were descended from monkeys. Clarence Darrow was the defense lawyer. Former U.S. secretary of state William Jennings Bryan was the prosecutor. The defense argued that the Butler Act was unconstitutional. They did not deny that Scopes had broken the law. He was convicted and fined $100. Darrow was quoted as saying, "Scopes isn't on trial, civilization is on trial." The world was changing and scientific advances made it harder to fully accept the Bible's interpretation of creation. The older generation seemed set in their ways. It would seem that a science was on trial defending itself against traditional beliefs. The Red Scare was the result of wartime tensions....
In the fallout of the first Great War, which had plagued European society for four long and brutal years, many were left to question the purpose of their existences. Stemming from the monstrously large number of casualties during the war, the mood left those whom survived to wonder how reason and logic could have started the conflict. For many people, a sense of alienation was stirred up who found the possibility of rejoining a society, which had not only allowed but prolonged such a catastrophe, to difficult. As society was adapting from war, so too were the artists and their respective movements. One such movement formed during the tumultuous years was reacting to the heighten fears of war called Dada. It is from the Dadaist movement in central Europe where we see a large influence on the future Surrealist movement. In Dada, we find surrealists’ motivation and interest in the ideas of chance and the irrational. Dadaist attempted to challenge the traditional aesthetics. In surrealism’s basic definition do we recognize the Dadaist influence of the anti-aesthetic, where shocks with juxtapositions of ordinary objects in unnatural circumstances were stressed. Among the many tenants of surrealism, the work of Sigmund Freud during the early half of the twentieth century on the unconscious became one of the major themes of the movement. No better example to serve this definition of surrealism, other than Salvador Dali, than the work of Rene Magritte.
The use of symbols in surrealism and the meaning within these paintings by Max Ernst played a significant influence on the notion of my experimental art making. He was a German painter, sculptor and a graphic artist but also considered as one of the primary pioneers of the Dada and Surrealism movement. They aimed to revolt against everyday reality by exploring the construction of the unconscious mind. By exploring the mind and transforming reality by surveying the desires of the human nature, it allows one to contemplate on the actuality and the realities of our world. Uniquely, Ernst created his own set of techniques such as collage, frottage, grattage, decalcomania and oscillation in order to convey his symbolism of his art making – but it also later incentivized artists such as Jackson Pollock and William De Kooning, revealing his such influence and impact in the art world.
Throughout the 20th century, Europe experienced vast amounts of change. New countries were established, old empires were eliminated, and conflict was common. While many factors in European culture advanced, progress was offset by conflict, economic depression, and political dictatorships. When considering the consequences of change, this 50 year block of time should be considered somewhat progressive due to the advancements in social life, science and technology, and economic recovery following WWI and the Great Depression. However, these advancements were almost counteracted by the regress in politics, namely the rise of fascism and communism, the age of anxiety, and the Cold War.
Modernism is defined in Merriam-Webster's Dictionary as "a self-conscious break with the past and a search for new forms of expression." While this explanation does relate what modernism means, the intricacies of the term go much deeper. Modernism began around 1890 and waned around 1922. Virginia Wolf once wrote, "In or about December, 1910, human character changed." (Hurt and Wilkie 1443). D.H. Lawrence wrote a similar statement about 1915: "It was 1915 the old world ended." (Hurt and Wilkie 1444). The importance of the exact dates of the Modernist period are not so relevant as the fact that new ideas were implemented in the era. Ideas that had never before been approached in the world of literature suddenly began emerging in the works of many great authors. Two of the pioneer Modernist writers were Joseph Conrad and T.S. Eliot. The tendencies to question the incontestable beliefs embedded in all thinking and to focus on the inner self dominated. Old viewpoints were tossed aside to make way for the discovery of modern man's personal spirituality. Two works that are considered important forbears in the Modern period are T.S. Eliot's The Wasteland and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness.
The impressionist movement is often considered to mark the beginning of the modern period of art. It was developed in France during the late 19th century. The impressionist movement arose out of dissatisfaction with the classical, dull subjects and clean cut precise techniques of painting. They preferred to paint outdoors concentrating more on landscapes and street scenes, and began to paint ordinary everyday people and liked to show the effects in natural light.
The artist of the Surrealist movement strives to take everyday objects or thoughts and turn them into dream-like, unrealistic paintings. Salvador Dali and Vladimir Kush are two great Surrealist painters. Dali and Kush created many different paintings, but they did create similar paintings such as: Dali’s The Ship with Butterfly Sails and Kush’s Fauna in La Mancha. The best of the two surrealist paintings has yet to be named.
The term Surrealism applies to Chagall, that is the term that was coined when Appolinaire when visiting his studio in 1913 murmured “Supernatural!”. This is not to say that Chagall was part of any Surrealist movement on the contrary he is against any style or movement. It used as a term where the artist has drawn upon consciously or unconsciously from the dream experience. It is clear in his works that he does not want any movement to restrict his expression and mobility. He is wholly against empathetic realism, of the Courbet, Impressionist or Cubist sort, yet he still uses Cubist devices and comes close to Impressionism. Chagall depicts a more dreamlike, story like content filled with symbolism (much of it traditional) in his paintings. He admired Manet, and drew great inspiration from Gauguin in his early years. He creates a style that was more universalistic and one that did not have any idealistic underpinnings.
Surrealism is very important in our daily lives. This movement of art and literature started in the 20th century with famous artists such as Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and Rene Magritte. Most of their artwork expresses a dream that they once had. My portrait also expresses a dream.
There are endless styles and themes in which artists can decide to paint in. Surrealism is a well known art movement that started in the 1900s. Surrealism was created to “change life” said Rimbaud or to “transform the world” said Marx and essentially that’s what it did. By eliminating logic, new boundaries were opened and a new focus was demonstrated by some artists. Surrealism was first seen in writing so this movement didn’t necessarily begin in the art field. But, it did help artists enhance their paintings with dream-like features and this was a form of expression. Along the way, the artists used this to create a spiritual orientation in their artwork. According to Cathrin Klingsöhr-Leroy, the definition of surrealism is “a pure psychic automatism by which it is intended to express, either verbally or in writing, or otherwise, the true function of thought. Thought dictated in the absence of all control exerted by reason, and outside all aesthetic or moral preoccupations.” Artists, at this point, were taking the concept of dreams and fantasy and experimenting with it. They applied it to their artwork creating surrealism.
