The first resource that I would like to discuss would be the Aspergers Society of Ontario. The ASO is a non-profit organization that was created by parents of children with Aspergers Spectrum Disorder and concerned professionals in 2000. The ASO is the only agency in Ontario that is devoted to serving those with Aspergers Syndrome, their families and other interested individuals.
The ASO provides educational information and support to the individual with the mental disorder, their families, educators and mental health professionals, and the community to allow the individual to realize their full potential.
If a Child Youth Worker has never worked with an individual with Aspergers then this will allow them to expand on their expertise of mental disorders and learn the specific type of autism and better understand the individual. If the individual would like out of school support the ASO would be beneficial for the CYW to provide that support. The ASO can be contacted through email or phone and will respond within 24 hours so that the individual and Child Youth Worker can have support and information immediately.
The ASO provides a service that can be beneficial for the support systems being a Child Youth Worker. The Aspergers Syndrome Info Line is provided by email or phone which provides guidance on resources and services throughout the province. This will be beneficial for a CYW because it will allow them to receive information on the mental disorder and have any questioned that they may have answered.

... and communicate at events held for individuals they can relate to. Being able to have the events provided to them that are provided to the community and being surrounded to individuals whom they can relate to allows them to feel accepted and appreciated.
The Autism Ontario for Toronto is beneficial to Child Youth Workers and will allow them to expand their expertise of mental disorders by being able to monitor the individual at the events being held to see how they are interacting with others and have the opportunity to find the child’s weaknesses and progress. It will also allow them to provide support for the child just incase incidences occur such as the child feeling over-whelmed or uncomfortable. Attending the events will allow the Child Youth Worker to put together activities that will interest the individual that can also improve on the child’s weakness.

ASD is better known as autism spectrum disorder which is a disorder of the development in the brain according to Autism Speaks Inc. (2015). Due to this developmental issue children can be thought of as being bad or unruly, but in reality they cannot help it. The reason it may seem that way is because the brain isn’t processing like it should be. I had the opportunity to join over 200 other participants at the day-long Asperger's Conference. Participants came from as far away as Africa to assist with organizational tasks and to listen to Dr. Attwood's presentation, as well as his answers to questions from the audience. Dr. Attwood, who has worked with Asperger's patients and lectured around the world, commented, "I have always been impressed by their patience and ingenuity in achieving abilities others acquire without a second thought."
Autism is a developmental disorder that appears within the first three years of a child’s life. It affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. Autism affects 1 out of 68 children. It is also the fastest growing disability in the United States. There are multiple types of Autism, some children are considered high functioning, and some are low functioning. “High functioning” is when a child with autism can function in life, and completes jobs, and chores with little to no help. “Low functioning” is when a child with autism cannot complete simple daily tasks without help, and (or) constant supervision.
The author emphasises a unique approach to each individual who falls on the spectrum because each problem can be approached numerous ways to find a proficient solution. The author advocates that each individual experiencing ASD find a program or learning approach that works favorably for them. Siegel denotes that no two educational programs or teaching methods are the same, nor is there any program that is more effective than the other. When choosing a program, one must consider personal ability, necessary accommodations, and whether or not the curriculum is developmentally appropriate.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that effects the brains development. It is characterized by affecting communication, cognition and social interaction. The spectrum of the disorders ranges from a mild condition called Asperger’s syndrome to a more severe form, which severely impairer’s development. The Office of Communications and Public Liaison states that the disorder affects one and eighty-eight children, however ASD effects boys more frequently than girls (Office of Communications and Public Liaison, 2013). ASD emerges in all age, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. The significant varied character and severity of the disorder is why ASD is considered a spectrum that poses a broad range of symptoms.
Many people across the world are unfamiliar with disorders associated with autism. Some people do not even know what autism actually is. Asperger’s Syndrome is one perplexing disorder, of countless, that needs to be acknowledged. Although it is one of the more well-known disorders, an understanding of Asperger’s is far from common knowledge. There is an abundance of misconceptions and people unaware of what Asperger Syndrome actually is. Being uncertain about the characteristics of a person with Asperger’s allows people to go through life not understanding the disorder itself and people who have it.
Living with a child with special needs can have profound effects on the entire family including the extended family members, siblings, parents, and the child with the special needs. It can affect all aspects of family functioning, since they have to be on the watch for the child. On the positive side, living with a child with special needs can expand horizons, develop family cohesion, increase the family members’ awareness of their inner strength, and promote connections to community groups. On the negative side, this child will need time, physical and emotional demands and financial cost in order to make the child’s life comfortable. However, the impacts will depend on the child’s condition, and its severity, as well as the emotional, physical, and the financial resources available to take care of the child.

Is there anybody in your family with autism? Almost every book or article is about how autism affects the person with the disorder but never the family around them. Being a parent or a child who has autism can be extremely difficult and change your whole life. Some parents view having a child with autism is a bad thing and would take away their autism if they could. Other parents think having their child be different is a good thing and would not take it away. I think that talking about the effects on the family is very important and should be discussed.
Autism is a problem that people have with communicating. It can affect many contrasting types of people in divergent ways and there is not yet a complete cure for it. People need to know about this disability and what people can do with people who have it.

Take the category of social interaction and relationships symptoms include : non verbal communication development problems such as , eye - to - eye gazing, body language, and facial expressions, failure to make friends with people their own age, lack of interest, and lack of empathy. The category for verbal and non verbal symptoms include : Delay or lack when learning to talk, about forty person of people with autism never speak, problems with starting, and keeping conversations, repetitive use of language, and difficulty understanding what someone is saying. Finally the category of interests and play include : unusual focus on pieces, preoccupation on certain topics, a need for the same routine, and stereotyped behaviors like hand flapping and body rocking.
The number of children that display autistic traits keeps rising and the need for services is at an all-time high. Out of 10,000 children born, 60 to 100 children and families will be affected by autistic spectrum disorder (Gulberg, 2010). Autism is characterized by a lack of connection to other people, even parents, and an avoidance of interpersonal situations (Feldman, 2011). Children with autism also show limited, repetitive and stereotypical patterns of behavior, interest, and activities. Not one child with autism is the same as the next; each child has their own severity and indicators of autism. A child with intellectual disabilities and a gifted child can both be given the diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum, because of the wide range of severities. Many of these children will not attend special schools, but instead be included in the general education population by inclusion. Inclusion has been found to have a number of benefits for children with autism. In addition, negative perspectives have also come into play when discussing autism and inclusion. Furthermore, parents have the right to make decisions for their child on an individual basis.

The Sensory integration frame of reference (FOR) has been used in occupational therapy treatment to treat individuals with Asperger’s syndrome ((Pfeiffer, Koenig, Kinnealey, Sheppard, & Henderson, 2011). Children with sensory processing deficits have difficulty regulating responses to sensations and stimuli (Pfeiffer et al., 2011). Therefore, the sensory integration FOR is designed to provide controlled sensory experiences so that an adaptive motor response is elicited (Pfeiffer et al., 2011). Interventions based on this FOR use planned, controlled sensory input in addition to the needs of the child and are characterized by an emphasis on sensory stimulation and active participation of the client (Pfeiffer et al., 2011). The objective of sensory integration is to improve sensory related behavior and attention and to increase abilities for children to interact socially, academically, and function independently (Pfeiffer et al., 2011). According to Pfeiffer et al. (2011), studies support the use of sensory integration interventions in children with Asperger’s syndrome.
There are numerous careers related to special needs, all of which require different schooling, training, mentorships, and other types of preparation. Any type of job working with children with mental and physical disabilities can be challenging but also very rewarding when one sees the child improve (Tyrer, 2007). Different types of careers affect special needs children in different ways. For example a teacher will help them thrive in school, while other careers may help the kids improve at home or in a public setting. Special needs workers should be creative, flexible, and personable to be able to meet the needs of the child and also provide useful information for the child’s parents. It is important for one to at least complete minimal required training so one will be fully prepared to work with a child with any type of delay. Often children in schools do not improve at a higher rate because their teacher may not have the necessary training to assist them (Marković, 2014). No matter what special needs career someone chooses, everyone should have one common goal: to help special needs children thrive. Marković from the article “Work with Kids with Special Needs” puts it perfectly when she states, “the main aim is that children with disabilities get the chance to grow, learn, and socialize with children with normal development, and that these children can adapt and learn together with children with special needs.
