Leadership Paper for Week Seven Effective supervisory techniques can be completely different from others. It depends on the supervisor and what their skills are that gives them the ability to get employees to do what needs to get done with enthusiasm. When a supervisor takes an action, it involves decision-making to arrive at an effective choice to get the desired result that they want. For every good decision, there is a good reaction and for every bad choice, there is a bad reaction. Techniques Michael Scott, (Steve Carell) plays the regional manager on “The Office”. Michael is the perfect example of what not to be if one strives to be a good supervisor (2017). It was very hard to find a good trait in Michael, he does a great job in his part in the TV series. However, after long and hard brainstorming, one good technique he does possess is that he does hold meetings regularly to try and train the employees. This a great technique to use to keep your employees up to date on safety procedures, …show more content…
Then he brings Jim out of his office and tells everyone about Jim’s promotion. Which was the right thing to do. However, Michael had been telling Dwight that he was getting the promotion knowing that he wasn’t all along. This is where if the writer was the supervisor it would have been handled different, right from the beginning Dwight should not have been informed he was getting the promotion if he wasn’t. As a good supervisor never tells their employee promises that can’t or don’t intend on keeping. As this causes bad morals in the workplace and could cause someone to possibly get hurt physically and emotionally. Also, if something did come up that Dwight wasn’t going to be promoted then he should have been called in and advised that the company had decided that Jim was a better fit. Reassuring him that he was at the top of the list to be considered for any future
Soon after the story begins we get an insight into who Michael truly is. One could easily describe him as a Meek young man, as the narrator states Michael is very unsure of himself while asking the townspeople questions on the subject of the whereabouts of the Hangman. Though, his insecurities do not stop him from his ability to do his job. To be a decent writer you have to be observant, which fits Michaels personality perfectly. While describing the Hangman's appearance he notices small details that most people would skim over. Describing him as “a little fellow, without
Lastly, the fourth management function is controlling and it helps observe employee's actions and checking the progress towards achieving the goal. Managers at PacSun have a specific way of controlling, for example: observing, coaching, and following up with each employee on his or her performance. Observing the employee when he or she was assigned a task can reveal if the employee is doing his or her job correctly. Secondly, coaching can be difficult if managers are unsure how to criticize employee's work. "Since you can't always offer better job opportunities, your coaching stance must place the emphasis on where it properly belongs — on continuous learning on the job, and the growing of skills wherever and whenever possible" (Nigro). Because managers control in PacSun, employees can understand how different tasks should be done correctly and effectively.
Phyllis then calls out Michael for making fun of them every day. His insults consist of fat shaming his employees and mocking them on their appearances. He is abusing his role and as a manager, he is using irresponsible dialog to communicate with his employees. By humiliating his employees he is satisfying his own self-worth and ego. Michael shows lack of empathy towards his employees and he is unwilling to recognize or even take into consideration what their thoughts and feelings are. When he starts his “training” he makes his main focus on himself and his feelings, even though the main focus was geared towards everyone. Michael Scott stated in the Kai pod episode “ you cannot make fun of a person for something or action they have no control over” he then continues on by saying it is only acceptable to make fun of something they have control over. He calls out Oscar and tells everyone it's okay to make fun of him because he chose to be gay; on the other hand, it was not okay for Michael’s employees to make fun of him because he did not choose to fall in the Koi pond. He is concerned more about what others see in him rather than helping the situation. He is using his authority and displaying his authority as manager to persuade the others to think it’s okay if someone else gets made fun of but not
Michael went from being useless on the field when joining the team, to becoming incredibly good through his team. Before he goes to Briarcrest, Michael Oher has no family taking care of him, and he has no future. Michael needs someone: “Big Mike was going to drop out,” said Big Tony. “And if he dropped, out he’d be like all his friends who dropped out: dead, in jail, or on the street selling drugs, just waiting to be dead or in jail” (3). With no one to guide Michael, he has no future ahead of him....
As now it can be concluded that to make a supervision session effective it is essential to have a deep understanding of these facts and theories. Characteristics of both supervisor and supervisee are equally important. As supervisors must know their roles and responsibilities at the same time, supervisee should have interest towards reflective practice. Maintaining a good supervisory relationship will be useful to analyse the problems. If there are any signs of underperformance seen in the supervisee, the supervisor can approach them to sort out the matter before it causes
Supervision is an opportunity where supervisees are able to review and reflect on their work in order to do it better. Supervisors bring their actual work practice to another person (individual supervision) and can help review what happened in their own practice in order to learn from that experience. Supervision is for better quality service. In a relationship of trust and transparency, supervisees talk about their work and through reflection and thoughtfulness learn from it and return to do it differently. Supervision is based on the assumption that
Introduction What does it mean to be an effective supervisor? Before taking this class, I thought that if a supervisor is able get their employees to work effectively, and efficiently, then the person is an effective supervisor. I didn’t realize until taking this class that supervisors do so much more. After learning more about the other tasks supervisors do like planning, being effective listeners, and motivating employees, I have a better understanding of effective supervision. I am aware that I have had supervisory experiences.
It holds that various situations require different leadership styles to result in effective outcomes. According to this school of thought, it is the assessment of the competence, as well as the commitment of the leader’s subjects that makes the whole practice a success. As a result, a leader should access the two factors before deciding on either directive or supportive form of management.
It is key, when supervisors are employing a developmental approach of supervision, to identify the current stage the supervisee is in and to provide feedback and support appropriate to that particular developmental stage, whilst at the
To become the phenomenal football player he is, Michael had to acquire or learn many lessons, that aided in the future. The first and most important, how to play the game of football. This is something SJ taught his big brother with spices that acted as players in the game. He taught him which player guards which player and
In one of Michael’s interviews with a coach, he completely shuts down and doesn't say a single word nor does he fill out any of the paperwork. This was the first time the coach has never gotten any answers from a player. Also, Michael tries to avoid Sean Tuohy when he first meets him by lying about how he has everything he needs just so Sean would leave him alone. Although Michael’s strategy didn’t work, he felt very uncomfortable in his first encounter with Sean. For these reasons, it really shows that Michael is an extremely shy guy.
It is imperative for supervisors to focus on what is required in order for his/her employees to accomplish their job. They must be supportive of their employees and provide continual feedback on their job performance .Supervisor need to include their employees when making changes that effect they way they perform their jobs or finding new way to do things that were problematic. Supervisors should give their employees more responsibly to make them feel more valued and powerful. There is also a major need for promotion, pay increase and compensation system (educational reimbursement, vacation incentives etc.
...ouse, 2016). Managers humbling themselves to make their employees comfortable at work by creating a learning environment usually results in a positive work environment. I have supervised employees with negative behaviors who wish to be left along to simply do their work with no desire to promote or be social. These are not necessarily bad employee but are employees who need the additional caution in their team placements. I use servant leadership as much as possible and where appropriate. I also ensure structure and integrity in the subordinate’s line of supervision are followed. Assisting is fine when coaching employees to better performance but as coaching occurs the level of coaching should progressively decrease with employee increased competence. When employee’s needs begin to affecting operations, I believe another style of supervision needs to be deployed.
Dog shows are seen as amusing and appealingly adorable to animal lovers, but the truth about dog shows is hidden. Dog shows are ruthless. All who are associated with the dog shows will stop at no extent to be number one, and unfortunately, dogs are stuck in the middle.
