Dog shows are seen as amusing and appealingly adorable to animal lovers, but the truth about dog shows is hidden. Dog shows are ruthless. All who are associated with the dog shows will stop at no extent to be number one, and unfortunately, dogs are stuck in the middle. The dog is the most common house pet in the U.S. (Minitab Blog ) and the majority of audiences at dog shows are from age 18-34, the perfect age to adopt a dog and learn responsibility. Combining information from both graphs it’s safe to assume that most of the audience has a dog (Annalect). So then I ask myself, “Why would animal lovers that own pets go to a dog show? Lack of information? Dog shows have been hiding their true brutality and now dog shows are put on the stand …show more content…
Owners go to extreme extents to win a simple ribbon while the dogs are put in grim situations many go as far as to canine incest. The article stated that ‘’Inbreeding increases the likelihood that recessive genes will be passed down to puppies, resulting in a host of serious congenital defects’’. One of these defects being epilepsy an incurable disease and as Mayo Clinic identifies it, ‘’A disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed, causing seizures.’’
Another troubling defect associated with inbreeding is hypothyroidism although it can be cured Hypothyroidism as identified by Mayo Clinic,’’Hypothyroidism's deficiency of thyroid hormones can disrupt such things as heart rate, body temperature, and all aspects of metabolism.’’ As provided by the information it’s clear to say hypothyroidism is an uncomfortable illness caused by the owners of the dogs.
A third impact of inbreeding is elbow dysplasia. Although common, elbow dysplasia has an increased chance with the recessive genes. ‘’The condition is characterized by a series of four developmental abnormalities that lead to malformation and degeneration of the elbow joint.’’ as said by Petmd and if left uncured can lead to more serious consequences such as lameness and

There has been an abundant amount of evidence of these cruel treatments. PetA demonstrated video proof of this animal abuse. One of these videos being a wicked owner who sprayed a dog with the bottle being marked as ‘’Plant Sprayer’’. Along with this, you will find a quantity of examples from dogs being pulled by the hair or put in many other extreme measures for the measurement of an ‘’acceptable’’ appearance for a dog show.
The dog show champion, Wild bill was inspected by AKC Breeders and their discoveries weren’t good, they ‘’found Wild Bill in a rusted cage, starving, along with 60 other mistreated dogs’’. The owner, Lin Duhe Allen, was proven guilty of animal abuse but who knows how many other dogs are put in these situations. Articles such as How to train your dog for a dog show by wikiHow will describe putting your dog in a dog show as ‘’ a chance to build a stronger bond with your dog, and also to show off your canine friend to an adoring public’’. ‘’A stronger bond’’? How does harsh training for the public signify that you will strengthen your bond with your dog? ’’Adoring Public’’? Does having your dog judged from top to bottom with unnatural expectations by the public seem
The misrepresentation of Pit Bull breeds in the media has been reflected in American culture. As these dogs were incorporated into World War I propaganda, they were perceived as symbols of courage and strength, the archetype of American dog breeds5. When, in the 1920s and 1930s, American Staffordshire Terrier “Pete the Pup” starred in the comedy Our Gang, later known as The Little Rascals, Pit Bulls were considered “nanny dogs” and family-friendly pets7. When the media focused heavily on illegal dog fighting rings and gang culture in the 1970s and 1980s, Pit Bulls were called demonic and unpredictable. Through their many roles, they have shown versatility and resilience, and lately they have suffered greatly.
In 18 August, 2011, the source of this event is from Herald Sun. A four-year-old lovely child named Ayen Chol was mauled and killed by a pit bull cross while she was playing in her home. The vicious pit bull escaped from a neighbour’s yard and mauled Ayen in a sudden attack. The dog rushed inside the house and set upon Ayen and some other children who were watching television. Ayen’s mom tried to beat the dog away from the children with a table, but she failed. Then the dog turned on Ayen and the vicious injuries caused Ayen’s death. Dr Cam Day, who is the RSPCA’s Queensland pit bull expert, has claimed that American pit bull terriers are ‘head, shoulder, feet and everything else above other breeds’ in terms of their capacity to injure and maim. If the government doesn’t ban pit bulls, these tragedies would continue to happen and children’s lives would be threatened all the
Furthermore, I have had the opportunity to participate in many projects with Queen City Greyhounds related to rescuing greyhounds from the vicious cycle of dog racing. Many states have previously outlawed this practice, but in many southern states, major cities host greyhound racing as a commodity. Consequently, the dogs are viewed as nothing more than a means through which to make profit; if a dog is no longer able to race well enough to generate money, they will either be euthanized or put up for adoption by a
A couple of emotional problems have been tested by researchers in 2011. This study was known as the Applied Animal Behaviour Science. This was the first quantitative data made about puppy mill dogs. The research was done on more than 1,100 dogs who had averagely had a new home for about two years. The research showed “The dogs were found to have s...
There are no perfect dogs in the world but only the most suitable dogs in our family. If we love our most faithful friends, we should not bring pain to them. If we love purebred dogs, we should take good care of them. If we do not excessive pursue purebred, there will be less genetic problems in purebred dogs. Don’t make more purebred dogs cry; don’t make more purebred puppies suffer more genetic diseases, don’t make more homeless purebred dogs, don’t make more purebred dogs die in the shelters. They have already devoted too much for us, so now, it is time for us to do something for them.
Regardless of the history of the pit bull breed, and the lack of knowledge in the field of animal genetics, many people still agree with breed specific legislation (BSL), more commonly in the form of pit bull breed bans. However, there are those who still believe genetics play a small role in the aggressive nature of the Pit Bull. These individuals contend that because breeders once bred and used these dogs for fighting, that the whole breed still poses a significant danger to the public and, therefore are not suitable as pets in today’s society (Preis, 2014).
I came across an article the other day on the Internet titled “The Importance of Purebred Dogs” by Babette Haggerty on her blog titled “Babette Haggerty on Dogs & Training.” In this article, Haggerty shares why she will always own a purebred dog. She begins her article with putting to shame PETA’s position on the matter by using heavy amounts of sarcasm. She then tells us a story of how she once adopted a mix-bred dog and how her father did not approve of this decision, seeing as he was an AKC judge and that she was always “raised with purebred dogs (Haggerty).” She then continues on to share how “buying purebred dogs and showing dogs at Westminster is a money maker (Haggerty)” and then goes into some detail on why dog shows are good for the economy without backing up her claims with any sources of evidence or statistics. Haggerty then goes on to explain how specific bre...
People are beginning to take dogs for granted. They feel that it is just an animal with no feelings and don’t consider what kind of role a dog really ...
Robert Gonzales, from Bakersfield, seemed like an average, ordinary man. One night however, he was accused of splashing beach on a small dog, and wrapping the dog’s mouth with duct tape. His goal was to discipline the dog. Gonzales was caught and arrested for abusing the animal. Animal abuse is an occurring problem in the U.S. But can be prevented if we take action.
positive changes since animal programs were introduced (Puppies). With all the love and attention the animals receive, they are likely to be adopted quicker because of improved behavior (Flynn). The animal programs also help the community by providing service dogs for law enforcement and people with disabilities, and save tax payers, who previously have been paying two billion doll...
Specific Purpose: To bring attention to the issue of dog breed discrimination through Breed Selective Legislation (BSL) and inform the audience how they can change it.
Abuse towards animals is recognized by many in the commercials shown on television, including the Sarah McLaughlin song and the pictures of animals starved and beaten. The commercials are shown quite regularly and give viewers a small look into the world of animal cruelty. What the commercials do not show, however, are the countless cases of people getting away with violence, as well as the hundreds of thousands of animals who did not live to make the commercials. Television, radio, and internet ads often depict and portray the lives of animals living in shelters, and ask the public to donate money each month for the cause. Without a doubt, this is the extent of what many people can say their experience with animal cruelty consists of: pictures and short video clips of half-dead dogs and cats left to die in over-crowded housing.
“A dog is a man’s best friend” goes much deeper than the phrase might initially imply. Recently many medical journals have begun to identify with the many and varied benefits of pet ownership. Men have always relied upon animals for work, transportation, and survival. As times have changed, man has begun to appreciate a different bond with animals. Gone are the days of animals running free outside around the homestead, for now animals are allowed inside and are considered by many to be an integral part of our daily lives! Medical studies have found that animals have a much greater intelligence level than originally thought. Through proper training and experience, animals are not only household pets, but also are becoming an accepted form of medical treatment.
One day when I was on www.kijiji.com I saw an ad for two free Old English Sheepdogs. What made this ad unique was the line stating that the dogs were blind due to unfortunate breeding circumstances. Ryan and I considered adopting one of these dogs, we liked the idea of giving a good home to an animal that couldn't see. It wasn't until a few days later that I really thought about the term “unfortunate breeding circumstances”.
Since the beginning of the modern day circus in the early 20th century millions of Americans have enjoyed the performances by both the people and the animals that perform for our entertainment. However, the audience is blinded by shock and awe of the show from what really happens behind the curtain. Animal cruelty, poor living conditions, and lack of legal regulation scars the animals and becomes very dangerous to the overall health of the animals and those who are around them. The mistreatment of animals in circuses has been occurring for far too long, and new laws need to be implemented in an effort to prevent future acts of cruelty toward these animals.
