Michael is participating in a two-month internship as a mental health counselor under the tutelage of Janet, the clinical director. Janet utilize the teacher role as the primary role to teach Michael specific concepts and techniques to deal with his insecurities and to handle clients whom unappreciated statements by assigning reading material to address such issues .” (Young & Basham, 2014). Therefore, I would use the conceptualization skill to understand and identify what is occurring when Michael feels insecure in his counseling abilities and identify his pattern of repeating himself saying “I just don’t know what to do.” (Young & Basham, 2014) Although, the teacher role is the primary role, Janet chose to implement
the counselor role to aid Michael in focusing on his personality when dealing with his discomfort as he analyzes a client’s statement (Young & Basham, 2014). This is essential as Michael deals with his insecurity in his counseling skills and abilities by confronting these issues affecting his ability to perform as a mental health counselor. However, I would use intervention skills to allow Michael to realize what I observe as the supervisor as he displays his discomfort with the client’s statement and his insecurity of his counseling abilities (Young & Basham, 2014). Even though, I have used two supervisor roles, there is a need for utilization of the consultant role (Young & Basham, 2014). The consultant role will provide identification of different interventions for the taped counseling session on the different models for Michael to consider or address relating to the taped section he requested supervision for a client (Young & Basham, 2014). Again, using intervention skills allow Michael to perceive what he is doing or how he is conducting his taped interview leading to the realization and grasping of what I as the supervisor observed; therefore, creating a need for consultation between the supervisor and Michael (Young & Basham, 2014) The supervisor’s role as a consultant provided constructive feedback to Michael to allow him to visualize a counseling session using Janet’s advice (Young & Basham, 2014). Michael was receptive and incorporated Janet’s advice into his counseling sections. Once again, intervention skills is vital in an internship program and provided an example and used by Michael as he presented his taped interview to Janet for review and provide feedback on providing effective counseling service to a client (Young & Basham, 2014).

The counselling process is one that may last for as little as one session or for years, it is within the middles stages of the helping relationship that particular counselling skills such as a focusing, challenging and immediacy can be implemented, as well as use of advanced empathy that can be applied due to increased familiarity with a speaker. Many actions may occur within middles stage of the helping relationship such as transitions that occur for a multitude of reasons and the outcome of which can vary based on the attitude of the speaker. Self-awareness remains vital throughout the entire counselling relationship due to the continual influence of empathy in the helping relationship and remaining aware my own motives and values when using advanced empathy and specific counselling skills. Ethics and boundaries are also involved within the counselling process as within a counselling relationship, I as the counsellor, must be careful with the balance or expenditure of power when challenging.
Counseling skills has provided me with a valuable insight into the helping relationship and how it is both created and maintained in order to encourage growth and development in the client. The factors involved within the helping relationship include considering Roger’s core conditions, congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathy as the three main characteristics necessary in a helping relationship. In order to fully incorporate all three of Roger’s core conditions, I as the counselor must be self-aware, as a lack of self-awareness may inhibit truly listening and understanding the client; self-awareness can be enhanced through exercises such as Johari’s window. Counseling skills such as body language and active listening also plays a role within encouraging the client to open up and can help me as the counselor convey empathy.

Within the individual psychology relationship the counselor has several roles that they hold. The counselor establishes an egalitarian relationship, working as teachers in their relationships. They model, teach, and assess areas of the client’s life such as how Ana grew up the middle child and her ways of responding and functioning. The counselor’s role is also to direct and encourage Ana, being warm and human, and admitting their own mistakes when necessary (Gladding, 2005; Murdock, 2013).
The ability to effectively supervise instruction is every teacher supervisors’ aspiration. Supervision, in the field of educational practice with clearly delineated roles and responsibilities, did not fall from the sky fully formed. One aspect I found striking was the role of advice giving in counseling. Prior to this class, I knew that counselors did not typically give opinions or advice to lead a client in a certain direction. What I did not know was the entire reasoning behind this. A counselor might avoid giving advice so that a client learns to make his/her own decisions, does not become dependent on the counselor, and to ensure that a client will not later blame the counselor if the counselor’s advice did not turn out well. In this context, I have a better appreciation and understanding of why therapists refrain from telling the client what to do.
