• Six of our alumni parents came together to celebrate Father’s Day and support each other as they take on a new, challenging, and rewarding life chapter. Fathers took home cribs, strollers, and car seats among other essential items that would’ve been difficult to afford without the support of our partner, Baby Buggy. • During our Summer of Engagement program, alumni have successfully led a social media training for seniors at West Hollywood Housing Corp, attended our annual Kick off BBQ, participated in a two day hip hop workshop, and recently kayaked through the LA River. Students expressed this year’s events required them to work together more as a team and refined their leadership. Wrapping up our summer is our alumni retreat, which will be held at UCLA’s Challenge Course and facilitated by Street Poets founder, Chris Hendrickson. The retreat will include our core alumni members with the goals to build on trust and team building skills and create a space to cultivate a stronger peer support system. • …show more content…
In addition, we are planning an upcoming backpacking retreat with our alumni leaders. We will continue to gather data and outcomes for future evaluations to document our work towards positive youth development. • For the upcoming school year, we will have the support of two UCLA MSW students who will assist with potential projects including: grant development, facilitating transfer workshops, strengthening community partnerships, coordinating monthly outings, and supporting case management needs. • After the success of our third annual resource fairs at Camp Gonzales and Camp Miller, the alumni program is looking forward to strengthening existing partnerships with community based organizations through quarterly networking
“When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs.” (Van Roeckel, 2008, p. 1) Deer Valley High School in Glendale, AZ is the first high school built in the Deer Valley Unified Scholl District, and with a population around 1800 students, the high school is one of the bigger schools in the state. It has a tradition of family on its’ campus, where there are still teachers teaching that were there when the school opened in 1980. A number of former students have become new teachers on campus and just about all the teachers’ children have attended and graduated from the campus. With a school like ours, there are many connections to the community around it and it is demonstrated by the programs that bring in parent and community to help with the development of our students. There are numerous booster clubs run on our campus to help support student achievement on the sports fields, a school to work programs to teach the students necessary skills in different areas of either nursing, sports medicine classes, and in the culinary arts classrooms, and funding to our school to help ensure all students graduate on time. There are many programs on our campus, but I will discuss four of the programs: baseball booster club, C2G program, “school-to-work”, and the special education program sponsored by Arrowhead Hospital. These programs are designed to improve the relationships between the campus and the people in the community, and give all students on campus every opportunity to succeed in their future.

When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
In the effort to support a growing population of diverse students, states are encouraging schools to promote family engagement and education equality. To help with this promotion schools need to have a welcoming and friendly environment for students, family, and staff members. The purpose for family engagement is to get families evolved in education to help support the academic success of their children. The most common family engagement opportunity is an open house right before school starts and parent/teacher conferences. However, family engagement events should be promoted throughout the year just not 3 times a year.
She has not allowed the physical distance that separates her from UCLA to limit her engagement. Over the years Stephanie has served the Alumni Association in many roles, chairing district, regional and state committees for the Freshman Scholarship Program, district chair of the Community College Program, president of the Bay Area Bruins, and Alumni Association Board Member. Stephanie has consistently and substantially demonstrated an ability and willingness to work positively, respectfully, and effectively with others in a way that fosters collaboration, communication, and cooperation among colleagues and members of the Bruin community. Stephanie has an established track record of serving in leadership roles in a variety of volunteer activities for UCLA in a way that focuses on improving the quality of the UCLA experience for both
As a Lancaster native, I have had an opportunity to experience the many facets of life for youth within the county. I have had close friends lose their way and sense of direction, due to a lack of leaders and positive mentors. I was fortunate to have these positive figures in my life to deter any unhealthy or destructive behavior. As I view things now, I see that more and more young men and women are falling victim to this trap, and have not found a way to end this detrimental cycle. A major issue concerning this matter is a lack of adequate funding for the mentoring programs. There are many individuals who would love to volunteer and assist with the programs, but there should be finances in place to take the youth on field trips of some sort that is related to the program that will make things more appealing, su...
As a mean to supporting family engagement and child’s learning, it is crucial that programs implement strategies for developing partnerships with families. But do the children benefit from effective family engagement? Family engagement pertains to all young children across ethnic backgrounds and early childhood education programs. Parents from diverse backgrounds, when given direction, can become more engaged with their children. Family Engagement is important for young children’s skill. The skills include literacy, cognitive, math, and social development. When the families engage in their children’s education with the help of other educator’s assistance, this supports the early childhood learning, which is a very critical part to success
Class of 2012, as we sit here this evening, I would like you to take a look at the classmates sitting around you. Many students have given countless hours of time, energy, and passion to worthy cuases that they have been a part of throughout high school. However, those aren't the only students deserving of recognition this evening. We have students here tonight, who have taken a stand for what they believe in, not even hesitating to compromise their reputations.
Today, as we graduate, with degree nearly in hand, I challenge each of you to make a difference in whatever you do. Remember that life didn't end when we re-entered school. Life continued throughout our program. Even when stretched to the limit, life only got more challenging. And now, graduating, life only changes pace. Our degree completion is not really an ending as much as a new beginning as we re-enter our lives of work and home. We thank all of our family, friends, instructors and co-workers who helped see us through this process. Thank you for this opportunity and good luck to you all.
What is a family? A family is two or more people consider themselves to be blood related, or related by marriage, or adoption. Our families are who we love. We as families look different in so many ways. A family’s caregiving unit might have a couple, a mother, a father, and children. A family could also be a single parent and child, a group of siblings, a small or large group of friends. A family defines itself in many different ways. Families are the foundation of how our society and how it works. It is how we come into the world and nurtured and given the tools that we need to go out into our world. We are both capable and healthy or not our families influence our lives either in a good way or a bad way. While families
“The future stretches before me, waiting for me to create the work of art that will become my life.” We have entered an age for celebration, an era to memorialize who we were, who we are and who we will eventually become. Celebrate this milestone greater than all the others, for it is the time we have spent here in our high school careers that will always be held close to heart.
Love is a weird feeling. It’s been said that love has nothing to do with your heart, it 's all chemical reactions inside of your brain. Infatuation, attraction, crush is such powerful feelings that people do think that they are in love. Also, it is blind to the other person’s weaknesses and exaggerates his or her strengths. Similarly, infatuation often fades within a short time. However, true love is so real and so strong, strong enough that if it came down to it you would even die for your partner. Love as much more than a feeling. It is based on a well-rounded knowledge of a person’s strengths and weaknesses. Not so in the case of China and Jeremy, in T. Coraghessan Boyle “The Love of my Life.” Before we talk about them
There are many differences between friends and family, such as whether the relationship will change, what kind of relationships they have and if they live together or not. Each parts show the essential differences between them.
There are so many different types of family relationships. Whatever form a family takes; it is an important part of everyone’s life. My family has played an important role in my life. Good family relationships serve as a foundation to interactions with others. Supportive families will help children to thrive. The quality of the family relationship is more important than the size of the family. Making the relationships priority, communication, and providing support for one another is key to developing relationships. Family relationships are what make up our world today; they shape the ways that we see things and the ways that we do things.
Good afternoon everyone. Friends, family, staff members, honored guests and fellow graduates. On behalf of the Grad Class of 2016, we were selected by our class to give some parting words. Today is our day. After thirteen years of knowing only these walls around us, our time here has come to an end. We are officially stepping forward into our futures. No longer united on one path, as we are now branching off on our own, taking our own paths.
