The need for funding during the summer will help defer costs of living while doing an internship in Springfield. I am seeking an internship with Out Now. As a student with learning disabilities I am not able to work during the semester while completing course work maintaining grades and course work requirements. Funding during the summer will allow me to continue to do community activism, while working in an environment about which I chose to write my Honors College thesis. The topic of urban development of Springfield, Massachusetts is where I want to focus my energy I seek to take the skills I have acquired at UMass and other aspects of life to be a part of urban redevelopment, and community advocacy through the neighborhood and city wide events. The scholarship would provide me funds to cover my living expenses. The total cost for rent is currently $600 a month, car insurance $92 a month in addition to phone service around $50 a month.

I grew up in a poor community and often times did not have my needs met, whether in the school environment, community environment or the resources and support of my family, to better understand what I later found out were significant learning disabilities. Through trial and tribulations I have learned what it means to be an advocate and stand up for people who need support and a voice for the voiceless. These are direct connections to the upbringing I did not have, which deeply affected how I performed and adjusted in the school system. I often time was also bullied and picked on in school by other students who had more than I did and made a point to remind me of these things.
