By allowing employees flexibility in their summer schedules, you are providing them with a sense of autonomy. According to the job characteristics model of job satisfaction, autonomy is a component of the job package that leads to employee satisfaction. Summer Fridays give employees more of a say in their schedule than they may receive throughout the rest of the year. By being given the opportunity to leave early on Friday and adjust the rest of their schedule accordingly, employees feel as if they have more control over their schedule and will thus be more satisfied in their position. Another contributor of job satisfaction is work-life balance, which Summer Fridays help to maintain positively. Summer is a time of going to the beach, taking
When a young adult decided to go to college they have a very big decision to make about what their future will hold and where their future will begin. Once the decision has been made and college has begun, new friends are made and the actions they do shape who they will become. Weekends come and go, but the decisions that are made are different for each and every individual that attends college. There are those who choose to stay on campus and spend the weekend doing things around school with new friends, others choose to go home for different reasons, such as being homesick and wanting to be with family or spending the time off of school for work to help pay for tuition, also there are the students who choose to go to other institutions to see new friends they have made or visit old ones from high school. What I am attempting to understand is with my target population, is not only what the group chooses to do with their weekend time, but also to try and understand why they choose to do what they do with that time.
Back in the olden days, schools were originally put on a schedule in which students would spend the majority of the year in school, and 2-3 months off for summer break. The purpose of this was so that children could be home for the summer to help their parents run family farms. Today, due to progressive industrialization of farming, modernized farming equipment, and decrease in family farms, the need for children to be home during the summer to help run family farms is minute if not obsolete; because of this many schools across the United States have transitioned to year-round schooling (“Summer”). Contrary to belief, year round schooling does not usually mean more school days. Currently most year-round schools adhere to the 180 day school year. Instead of the traditional lengthy summer vacation, year-round schools distribute the 180 days throughout the entire year while allowing for shorter breaks. Common scheduling for year-round schools includes cycles of 2-3 months in school followed by 2-3 week breaks (“Research Spotlight...
Colby Public Schools most certainly should switch to a four-day school week as it will lead to a saving of money, better in-depth interaction, and finally more family, friend, and work time. There are currently a number of schools who have made the brave move by switching from a five day school schedule to a four day schedule. In fact, The Education Commission has estimated that hundreds of districts in 17 states have made the transition. Also, there are state officials present within Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, and Oregon and all have reported increases in the four-day schedule. It is a movement that grows by the month and is the way forward in education. Colby Public Schools absolutely should transition
Educational debates are a widespread in today’s society. Currently, one of the largest debates in education is the debate of whether schools should stay with the traditional school calendar or change to a year-round calendar. The main focus of the debate is centered around the idea that using the year-round calendar will provide kids with a more consistent learning schedule, which in turn creates better grades within the school and cuts back on summer learning loss. Year-round calendar and traditional calendar are far different. Traditional school calendar provides ten weeks of summer break and year-round calendar provides a shorter summer break but more frequent breaks throughout the year. The frequent breaks provide families the opportunity to choose what school year would be the best fit for their family and also helps keep children motivated in school. With the information given many believe the year-round calendar will provide a better education by preventing summer learning loss, create a better calendar to fit certain lifestyles, and promote more motivation in school.
There is not much to do during spring break in Smallville except for going out and making your own fun. Now what I mean by that is you can have good fun. For example, you can go bowling, have a party or just chill out with your friends. Then there is bad fun. For example, go egging or buy paintball guns and shoot stuff. My friends and I decided to have bad fun for spring break. When we first started egging it was only six of us. Earl, David, Charles, Brandon, Jerrid, and myself. As the first couple of days went by we realized that other people in the city was starting to form teams of their own to get us back for egging them. Let me tell you a little bit about my crew. Earl is my right hand man. He was giving the nickname cruel intentions for a reason. David is my best friend. He is a cool, laid back type of guy. Charles is my cousin. If u see David, Charles, and I at once people would think we was all brothers. Charles can be quiet sometimes but he also has a wild side to him. Brandon is my other cousin. He is the live wire out of the bunch. Brandon is pretty much ready for anything. If its fun he will join. Jerrid says one word about once every ten minutes. But his action speak louder than words. And then there is me. I go by the name Marcus. Some of my friends in Springfield call me Marc-d or mc. I am a quiet, laid back, live wire type of guy.
Summer should be a time to relax after hard work. "Students should deserve a break after their hard work...
However, they are still simultaneously providing students with more frequent and consistent breaks from school. The most popular year-round schedule is a 45-15 plan. With the 45-15 plan children attend school for 45 days then have three weeks off, plus having days off for major holidays and teacher workdays. Year-round school increases retention rates. Students in year-round schools have showed higher scores on some standardized tests. The schedule gives teachers a break when they most need it, like during the grading period. Year-round schools have a lower staff turnover rate. A year-round schedule might reduce absences because the frequent breaks allow for exhausted or sick teachers and students to recover and relax before returning to school. Both teachers and students might feel less burnout. Teachers that are on a year-round schedule think it as a positive change. Parents and students in year-round schools also have positive feelings toward year-round schooling because the frequent breaks allow them to recharge and reenergize. Also, students would not have
We don't realize how much teachers work during summer. they do a lot.According to neatoday.org they state "As educators begin a new school year they usually have time to attend staff meetings, tidy up classrooms, and prepare for upcoming students."Well since the 45 to 15 day week thing teachers only have 15 days to do those things. Witch probably leaves little to no time for them to spend time with family or to relax. Also found on neatoday.org , "There is much pressureSetting up the classroom and getting ready for the kids return.'' Witch is completely unfair to the teachers just because there school bored decided to run a new schedule.
School districts have switched from the traditional 8-10 week summer vacation to a modified year-round calander to retain the information over the WHOLE year. This way kids will have several shorter vacations. This can cause a positive spike in low-performing schools. The change to school year-round has increased a signifigant amount in the past 10 years.
Most schools which operate year round have adopted the balanced or 45/15 calendar, which switches between nine weeks of school and three week breaks. Other schools use the similarly structured 60/20 or 90/30 calendars which simply lengthen both the learning periods and vacations(Chittom 2). As simple as each plan seems, none preserves the mental health of students. “It only takes about 3 weeks for stress to start creating more lasting problem such as depression and decreased motivation in teenagers,” notes Dr. Sofia Jalilie, a pediatrician in the Bay Area, during an interview. Because of rigorous academic expectations, along with pressure for grades, choosing colleges and a future career, the high school environment can be considered stressful. As shown by three popular systems, year round calendars give students a resting opportunity only, at minimum, after six weeks, which, from Dr. Jalilie's words, is enough time for the students’ brains to be damaged. This effect on students reveals a disadvantage of the year round system because in high schools, mental health and student stress are already large concerns. Meanwhile, supporters of year round calendars claim that they aid students by preventing summer learning loss, the popular theory that students forget most of the information learned in the prior school year during summer break(Von Drehle). Those who believe in the term link no summer to better academic performance. However, in a comparison of test scores throughout North Carolina, a school with diversity in its school calendars, "achievement scores were no greater among students from year-round schools as students from traditional schools"(Chittom 4). Standardized tests are considered one of the best ways to compare students. The year round schools' failure to be superior shows summer learning loss to be inaccurate and demonstrates that making students attend
"Summer means happy times and good sunshine. It means going to the beach, going to Disneyland, having fun." This quote by Brian Wilson shows that extending the school year would not only feel more like a punishment but it would also be hurting the school. Some of the main reasons for summer break is so that: students and facalty can take a mental break, summer activtes, and so that teachers can get things ready for the new students comin in. This hiatus helps keep down the chaos.
Why are children committed to summer rather than school? Many children can’t wait until summer is here. Some may count down the days, and others might just wait until its time. When children are in school they learn, but are not fully concentrated if in school year round. For example; some children may want to try other sport activities. If the children are in school during the summer, then there will be no extra time to expand the child’s interest. During the summer, children are given the opportunity to try time consuming activities. Representing school year round takes time away from experiencing these
Summer vacation is beneficial to kids, their parents, and teachers for several reasons. A summer break allows time for rest, family vacations and summer jobs. If summer vacation were eliminated from the school year, wouldn't you want a vacation, a break, or quality family
Those raised in America know and miss summer break. However, with a century’s worth of studies piling up, people are now calling for change. Lack of structure during summer break lets unguided children make poor decisions, and the effects of the break carry into the school year and affect students and teachers alike. Although a long summer break has been standard in America for years now, studies are showing that it has a detrimental impact on students.
One piece of evidence against summer vacation is, the rapid growth of the economies and the rising academic standards of countries such as China and India, two countries with a rigorous academic schedule. Chinese students have consistently scored higher in areas of math and science than American students, providing reason to believe our lack of schooling is ineffective compared to others. However, as author Benjamin Studebaker quotes, “But think about how the Chinese economy grows. This is not a country that has been inventing fabulous things that we all want to buy. Americans and Europeans make products in China because the labor there is cheap. The products are designed by Americans and Europeans, it's American and European intellectual
