Summary of a River Study
We visited the Highland Water River on the 13th of September. The
River Highland Water site is located in the new forest, that last year
became a national park. The location of the river is shown on map 1,
where Ocknell Enclosure is the source. The New Forest is located in
the South of England. It flows close to Lyndhurt and Brockenhurst, and
is a short river with a total length of just 12 miles. Its mouth is in
Lymington, and there it flows into Southampton Water, where it flows
out into the English Channel.
Site 1 is the Source of the River called Ocknell Plain. It is located
in a marshy area, and is the furthest away from the nearest town (7
km). Its grid reference is . It was also the furthest to walk to, it
was far away from built up areas, and we had to walk for half a mile
to reach the area. Site 2 is closer to the main road, and (unlike
source 1) it is within a few minutes walking distance. This site is
within 4 km of Lyndhurst; it is more built up and developed here.
Millyford Bridge’s grid reference is . The Balmer Lawn (site 3) is
located within 1 km of Brockenhurst. Here human influence is highest,
and it is a far busier area, as it is situated next to a hotel so
there are more people in the area.
Equipment
=========
· Stop clock
· Tape measure to measure the width of the river
· Rulers to draw the tables, and measure the depth of the river
· Dog biscuits to test the velocity of the river
· Pencils and Pens to record the results, and take sketches at each
site
· Clipboards to record the results more accurately
· A digital camera, to take photographs at each site, to ensure that
if we forget our sketches we could use them afterwards to help with
the sketch.
Author and historian, Carol Sheriff, completed the award winning book The Artificial River, which chronicles the construction of the Erie Canal from 1817 to 1862, in 1996. In this book, Sheriff writes in a manner that makes the events, changes, and feelings surrounding the Erie Canal’s construction accessible to the general public. Terms she uses within the work are fully explained, and much of her content is first hand information gathered from ordinary people who lived near the Canal. This book covers a range of issues including reform, religious and workers’ rights, the environment, and the market revolution. Sheriff’s primary aim in this piece is to illustrate how the construction of the Erie Canal affected the peoples’ views on these issues.
When I started to reading this book, I do not imagine what it was about .I am an international student, and I have been living in the U.S for a short time , so many of the issues regarding of American history are new for me. The Erie Canal was part of the unknown subjects. It has been interesting to know, and learned that the Americans have had intension of shaping and preserve its history. And great historians, they would give out even the smallest details that helped make this nation what it is today.

The hymn, “Shall We Gather at the River” and “The Scarlet Ibis” have similar themes. One of the themes is, one day everything will end, so instead of wanting and wishing for more, appreciate what you have now. The song and short stories have similar themes and morals of stories.
There is no better feeling in this world than to be outdoors with nature, especially when there are numerous activities to dabble in. Often times people take for granted the sentimental value that they can experience by simply walking through a park. God created the Earth to be beautiful and peaceful, and people need to keep it that way. I have always shared a love of the outdoors with my dad and my brother. We have gone on numerous camping, hiking, fishing, and star-gazing trips ever since I can remember. It was no surprise to me when my dad decided to buy a lake house on Hyco Lake, right outside of Roxboro. We got a really good deal on the house, so my dad decided that Hyco Lake was the perfect spot.
The role of relationship you have with other people often has direct influence on the individual choices and belief in the life. In the short story “on the rainy river”, the author Tim O’Brien inform us about his experiences and how his interacted with a single person had effected his life so could understand himself. It is hard for anyone to be dependent on just his believes and own personal experience, when there are so many people with different belief to influence you choices and have the right choices for you self. Occasionally taking experience and knowledge of other people to help you understand and build from them your own identity and choices in life.
All lives revolve around decisions and instances from ones past. In A River Runs Through It (1992), director Robert Redford uses this idea and applies it to a true story of two brothers from Montana, Norman and Paul Maclean (Craig Sheffer and Brad Pitt, respectively). Based on the autobiographical novel by Norman Maclean himself, River uses Maclean’s metaphysical beliefs about life and nature to present its many themes. Using a longing score, various film devices, and a story line involving themes of youth, loss, and the pitfalls of pride, Robert Redford crafts a film about the beauty of the past.
The Cuyahoga River received its name from the Iroquois meaning “crooked water” or “place of the jawbone.”(Britannica). Running through about 80 miles of land the Cuyahoga River became a centre of commercial transportation (Britannica). Cleveland, Ohio which is located on the Cuyahoga River was one of America's major industrial centers (Website). Until about the mid 20th century when the lower portion of the river that ran through Cleveland, Ohio became polluted. From decades of uncontrolled dumping of industrial hazardous waste which turned the water toxic(Book) and some of the waste also came from a lack of sewer systems (Website). To make this water even more dangerous the hazardous waste was flammable because it was a mixture of oil and chemicals(Book).
The measurements that were taken will be studied so conclusions can be made about the changes to characteristics of a river with distance downstream. Aims and Hypotheses The overall aim of this study is to investigate the changes in river characteristics downstream along Loughton Brook.
To tell how healthy a body of water is, you would need to measure the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the water. Water is only able to dissolve a certain amount of oxygen to be classified as healthy. And once, the maximum amount of oxygen from the atmosphere that can dissolve in water, which is about 9.8 mg/l, is reached , no more oxygen will dissolve. This shows that water needs to maintain a certain amount of dissolved oxygen, typically 4-5 mg/l, for it to be classified as healthy and to support aquatic animals. If the dissolved oxygen levels drop below 5.0 mg/l, the aquatic life will be put under stress. The amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is affected by several physical and biological (natural) factors.
Approximately 5500 years ago four of the worlds' most prestigious ancient river civilizations had emerged. Our world has been left in astonishment and awe wondering how these civilizations were developed. Egypt and Mesopotamia were the first ancient river civilizations to create cities and their own ways of living. Society, geography, and religion played an enormous role in the development of the ancient cities. Although there is evidence of early Sumerian contact with the Egyptians, Egypt's civilization was largely self-generated and its history and cultural patterns differed from Mesopotamia.
A useful way to study a river is to look at its long profile and its
In order to find the stream quality of a river, a scientist must look at the stream ecology. The stream ecology is the study of the organisms and their dwelling. First, the scientist will look at the organisms living in a certain ecosystem, say the Jordan River, and rate them intolerable to tolerable. The toleration is based upon whether the organism can survive in highly polluted areas or if they will die. The current, or stream flow, also must be taken into account. Certain creatures live in the shallows, unmoving pockets, while others live out in the open water. Creatures can also be found in riffles, or small rocky area similar to a water fall. The differences between pools and riffles play a large part in the organisms as well as streams
