The Office of Residential Life at Elizabethtown College welcomed a new member to its team at the start of the 2015-2016 academic year. Stephanie (Stepf) Collins is the new area coordinator and she oversees the Ober and Founders residence halls. What Does an Area Coordinator Do? The Area Coordinator (AC) plays many vital roles in the college community. They serve as educators, role models, mentors, and so much more. In 1968, Lenoir Dining Hall at UNC Chapel Hill served food to nearly 2,000 students and faculty a day. The lunch ladies managing the cafeteria worked through long hours, short wages and demeaning work conditions. Though state workers, the food workers were neither represented by a union nor were their grievances acknowledged by their oppressive supervisors. Food service was tough enough for food workers at the university because students and faculty did not typically regard the non-faculty employees with much respect or recognition. This lack of respect or recognition was amplified by high racial tensions of the Civil Rights era and the reality that most non-faculty employees were African Americans serving a predominantly white student population.

In this capacity I serve as a liaison between my local tem members, administration teams, and management. This includes coordinating schedules, delegating tasks, and monitoring workflows.
When asked of her daily routine she explained that when someone notices abnormal behavior she calls students to her office to speak with them to find out what is happening. She then works with the social worker, school resource officer, administration and parents to resolve these issues. This is what the majority of her time is spent on with a small portion going to the community events. As I shadowed her for a couple hours of my day what we were able to do is deal with student issues that ranged from young adolescents that had social issues (boyfriend/girlfriend) to students that had a troubled home life and needed assistance. Another area that she deals with a little is helping the pregnant adolescents prepare themselves for motherhood and the responsibilities that are associated with raising a child. Many studies have shown that adolescents residing in low income or high crime neighborhoods are more likely to get involved with deviant behavior or committing criminal acts. (Deutsch, 2012) There are several neighborhood factors that affect the crime rates of the neighborhood such as overcrowding, low economic status, the neighborhood’s reputation and its residential instability. These may create a disorganized community, leading to distrust and cynicism among residents in the community. As a result, there would be a higher rate of opportunities for crimes and delinquency. (Kurlychek, 2011) Thus high rates of crimes and violence are more likely to occur at these areas.
Many historians regard the 1920’s as one of the most important decades in Canadian history, this is true. The Site Coordinator works with the school staff and identifies students at risk of dropping out. Through assessing the school and student needs Site Coordinators establish community relationships with social service agencies, health care providers and volunteers.
The word “job” comes across as hard work, and chores, but the thing that is often overlooked is the deeper meaning that comes with it. Many people may look at the residential advisor position and believe they are only there to get the residents in trouble when they break rules. After my observations, interviews and overall reflection on their subculture, I came to the realization that being a residential advisor is much more than writing residents up for alcohol or noise complaints. It is about the relationships built and the idea that you’re helping others the way you were, or weren’t, during your freshman year in the dorms. The RAs may be there for the free room and board as well as the pay, but they are initially there to make the best they can out of the resident’s dorm experience.
The focus of this paper is to dispel a common view that community colleges do not provide on-campus housing and to provide greater insights into the types of community colleges that provide on-campus housing, the typical student who resides in on-campus housing, a guide to various California community colleges that provide on-campus housing, and the impact that on-campus housing has on student learning outcomes, financial gains for community colleges that provide on-campus housing, and an overview of the lack of data in the area of not only on-campus housing in community colleges, but community colleges at large. According to Cohen and Brawer (2008) access to student housing is one of the fundamental dissimilarities between public community colleges and four-year institutions of higher learning (p. 220). Cohen and Brawer (2008) take the position that community colleges lack the all-encompassing ability to appreciate the connectedness of community in the same fashion as that of four-year colleges or universities. Broader analysis of current data relating to on-campus housing in rural community colleges is three-fold. First, it exposes the lack of concrete observation or empirical data on the issues that surround community colleges with respect to on-campus housing. A wealth of data supports the learning outcomes, financial impact, gains, and drawbacks of on-campus housing, but from the vantage point of on-campus housing at the four year college or university level. Data shared were from several sources, one which dates back to 1998 and the other two from 2005 and 2006. The Canadian Residential School system has left a lasting legacy on multiple generations of First Nations people across the country. Even in their old age, they are still affected by the efforts of the Department of Indian Affairs to assimilate the First Nations people into the new settler’s society. Cecile Kelto provided a first-hand account of what occurred within the walls of schoolhouse, and while it is quite emotional, she may not the picture that one many hope for as she believes that she ‘had it better’ than others that she went to school with . Her interview is still an important, though, as it shows that so much more was going on than just physical and sexual abuse because she was still traumatized by other factors that are identified
I am writing this essay to represent my knowledge of the current school residential rules and regulations that I have broken on multiple occasions. I was told to write this essay due to my lack of education on the rules regarding residential life guest and visitation, residential lif noise quiet hours violations, residential life keys and registration, and residential life compliance which lead to me breaking the rule on campus. On November 18th, 2015, the UMBC peer review council met to hear my case arising from my November 4, 2015 charge letter. Here I was found guilty for all the charges against me. On this campus, my main focus should be to do well in my classes and learn from my experiences. Causing trouble throughout residential buildings should not be a part of any of the action that I have came to school for. To show my understanding of the rules and regulations that I have broken I will state the rules I have went against and show I have went against them, I will also state the consequences given to me and show how these incidents have affected my life on campus directly.
Healthy Student Living, this is a wonderful program offered to all Broward college students. It is especially great for any person going into the Health Science field. When you were in high school and planned on going to college I’m sure you thought of clubs, programs, and or organizations that will help assist you into the career you wanted. Well for all medical students this program is it! “We’re here to answer all of your health-related questions, form offering insight into sexually transmitted diseases to enlighten you about the food groups.” (Broward College, Student Life). Healthy Student Living gives students the following opportunities: (1) practice healthy living, (2) network with different physicians, and (3) interact with diverse groups of the community.
