I had the opportunity to interview with the school psychologists on our campus. She currently holds a master’s level degree in psychology and has worked for the district for 10 years now with 3 of those years at this location. Discussing what she does on a regular bases she explained how she reaches out to contacts within the community to help parents and children with unresolved issues to help them find answers. She creates activities that help to nurture a better lifestyle for these families. I discussed with her in length about these events and she described them as a social environment conducive to a higher quality in learning, social interaction and family lifestyle. The reason for planning these events in our campus is because of the lower demographics and the campus considered a special class of schools which are known as Title 1 which receives more aid than other campuses. When asked of her daily routine she explained that when someone notices abnormal behavior she calls students to her office to speak with them to find out what is happening. She then works with the social worker, school resource officer, administration and parents to resolve these issues. This is what the majority of her time is spent on with a small portion going to the community events. As I shadowed her for a couple hours of my day what we were able to do is deal with student issues that ranged from young adolescents that had social issues (boyfriend/girlfriend) to students that had a troubled home life and needed assistance. Another area that she deals with a little is helping the pregnant adolescents prepare themselves for motherhood and the responsibilities that are associated with raising a child. I have researched some other positions within our school board that require the degree I am about to obtain. Even if I was not able to find a comparable position within our school district there may be other position with other counties or outside employers that may need to be filled. Some of the positions that I have sent resumes to that had positions listed were state correction facilities for children, behavioral health facilities, other school districts in neighboring counties and private employers. A downside to the job search is that my wife and I have all of our family here locally so relocating is going to be a very last option for us. The best option ideally would be for me to interview and hold a position within our district where I am established and known not only by supervisors but the students I serve as well.

I met my interviewee, Bill Hemphill through a mutual relative in my family who was generous enough to provide his contact information. Although he was a busy man, he agreed to let me interview him at his office. My first impression of him was that he was a professional, serious, and strict when it came to his patients. He attire was very business professional; he wore a black suite, white shirt and Winsor knot tie. To suite a qualified Medical Social Worker you must be hard working, educated and committed.
By the end of my sophomore year, psychology had captivated my interest. It was not until my senior year that I realized exactly which direction I wanted to take in the pursuit of this discipline. I focused my interest into the realms of social work; where I could develop intervention strategies (“IS”) that may help alleviate stressors, promote motivation within the classroom context, and facilitate better child-parent and student-teacher relations. My interests and experience make me a uniquely qualified candidate for, and asset to, the Masters in Social Work Program at the University of Washington. I feel the pursuit of this field will give me the knowledge and skills I need to be a high quality school social worker.

Bringing up the topic of conducting a case study to my cooperating teacher was a surprising experience. I remember asking my teacher to recommend a “difficult” student that would provide an interesting interview. My teacher quickly responded, “Why do your professors always want a difficult student? Sometimes good students provide the most interesting interviews.” I thought about his response and the next day asked him if I could interview Antonio, a student who had intrigued me from the first day I entered Dunn Middle School. Antonio caught my attention because based on his appearance and demeanor in class, one would assume Antonio was a poor student who could not care less about what was being learned in the classroom. However, once a lesson began or a worksheet was distributed, Antonio transformed into a focused and enthralled student. During my lectures I had to avoid calling on him because he knew the answers right away and loved giving correct answers. I wanted to know how a student who was so quiet and indifferent during homeroom could become an ideal student when class began. Antonio might not be considered a “difficult” student, but he is definitely an interesting case and I learned a lot from him during the interview.
I cannot recall a more rewarding experience than helping facilitate a child’s education while enabling parent participation alike. These experiences have drawn me to my current position as an Educational Assistant where I am constantly interacting and establishing relationships with students, learning about their goals and aspirations. It is that same desire to empower our future students that has steered me towards a career as a school counselor. By enrolling in the Masters in counseling program, I aspire to develop methods and experience to become an effective, experienced, and adaptable school counselor that promotes self-awareness, allowing students to realize their full potential and impetus them towards a promising future. I want to learn skills that facilitate personal and career development, ensuring that our students grow accomplishing their goals and ambitions. To discover techniques that help students improve in all areas of academic achievement, establishing relationships with students and parents alike. A great deal of consideration needs to go into preparing a child for the change that occurs when going from a home/child care atmosphere into a school environment. The Teacher needs to consider the child in its entirety throughout the changeover to scholarly activities. This must include the child’s physical readiness, socio-emotional, and cognitive abilities for learning. It is equally essential to discover ways in which to involve the children's first and most important teachers, their families. The families have the most information about their child's strengths, weaknesses as well as the challenges the child faces. Being able to communicate with the families is vital to teachers in collecting in depth information about their students in order to be better equipped to meet the needs of the children.

For my psychology interview assignment, I had the privilege of interviewing Elaine, who is the Director of Preschool X, which is an educational institution. She reports that she has been in this position for 13 years since its inception. Elaine is a close friend of my aunt, which was how I was able to meet her. She explained that her responsibilities include; the hiring of all personnel related to the school, submission of criminal background checks, the medical reports for all staff and children must be current, and also developed a curriculum for the teachers to execute. She has parent meetings and she deals with parents on a daily basis. For any arising issues, Elaine conferences with parents at least once or twice a week. Have weekly staff meetings regarding the curriculum. She also plays the role as the educational event coordinator, where she would “invite people from the dinosaur museum or alley pond park to come over to her preschool, to enrich the children”.
This is an important idea because it is necessary for all stakeholders to comprehend that some students are exposed and experience real life, serious issues such as; poverty/homelessness, hunger, abuse, custody battles (CPSEL 6B-1). It is difficult for a child to be concerned about homework when they are consumed with frustration, fear, anxiety about when they will eat, where they will live or sleep for the night. It is challenging for students to focus on their test performance when they are emotionally consumed with thoughts of their parents who failed to come home the night before and they have not heard from them since they left for school the previous morning. If I were to implement this concept at my school, visitors would see collaboration with the community to provide the students and their families with possible resources to assist them in addressing their needs. Visitors would also see a triangular mentoring program where administration and staff would mentor the older students, and those students in return would mentor the younger students.
I felt many ways during my parent interview assignment. The parent that I had interviewed had many struggles with her school district. I felt as if there were a lot of communication issues between the parent and the school. I felt that this communication could have been cleared up if they were to work and understand each other perspectives. The mother is so focused on getting her child off an IEP, that I don’t feel she is listening to the intervention the school is trying to give her son. I feel that she wanted intervention and recourses but not the ones that the school is offering. In my opinion, the only one suffering is the child. The communication gap confuses me, as it is the most important part of a child’s growth, academically. This gap needs to be closed and they all need to work together to overcome the challenges that they have been faced with.
I currently work with the South Kitsap School District and greatly enjoy the school environment and the comradery and teamwork with the teachers and other therapists. After completion of my masters degree, I plan to continue working in the public schools. The kids that I work with have not received the services that they so greatly need and deserve because of the shortage of SLPs in my rural area. I was deeply saddened to see these kids without proper services when I know how much they could excel if they were just given the appropriate support. I interviewed a teacher from the Philadelphia School District and here is the result from my interview. I am a teacher in the head start program of Philadelphia .I have been with the head start program for 10yrs. I see children younger than kindergarteners with special needs. I see this problem not only with education but behavioral. Children with special problems can learn. You have to know how to deal with children period. Regular children and special educational children all learn. Special educational children know exactly what they’re doing just as well as regular children.
In every person 's life, there is a time which changes him or her dramatically. For me, it was the time I spent at the Renmin University of China as a graduate student of Master of Social Psychology. At the university, my interest in psychology was powered even further when I realized that it can prove to be really useful in making this world a better place. Going through life changing experiences and encounters filled me with a better perspective of psychology and made me realize that it is a potent subject which can effectively persuade people into a positive path of living.
