Summary of the research question and outcome My Research Project question was heavily influenced by my passion for both sport and journalism. Through these interests, I was able to delve deeper into how elite athletes are affected by the modern evolution of social media. From my research, I discovered the diverse impact that social media can have on elite athletes. The overall effects that social media had on sportspeople differed was dependant on the individual. In some instances, the mental health of these athletes was affected; showing how disturbing abusive social media use can be for sportspeople. To see how professional sporting bodies deal with their athletes, I conducted two questionnaires as part of my research; one with a current …show more content…
This process allowed me to relevantly refine evidence that would best answer my project question of “How is social media affecting the lives of modern-day elite athletes?”. Interviews with an AFL player and a former professional sporting club media manager were two main primary sources I utilised to give me an educated answer on the question. Information extracted from the media manager interview gave a comprehensive insight into the procedures that clubs go through to best protect their players from social media backlash. Mainly through secondary sources, I was shown the negative effects that social media can have on elite athletes. One particular example of this was with retired AFL player Travis Cloke, when he spoke out about his mental health battle in regards to social media. These personal episodes that have now become public gave in depth sources that were easily verifiable in terms of their …show more content…
Both primary and secondary sources assisted me in answering my research question, with a range of perspectives and viewpoints displayed in the outcome. These perceptions on social media were outlined in a structural manner across the outcome, with subheadings to recognise certain viewpoints within the report. My report was focused towards elite athletes of any field, however the content provided in my outcome had sources that recognised the positives and negatives seen by athletes in more specific sports. In saying this, the evidence can most certainly be adapted to any elite athlete, regardless of their profession. The report seen in my outcome could be a useful mechanism for up and coming athletes in their adolescent years. Reading and recognising the effects that social media can have on them as they become professional athletes would be extremely beneficial for their own wellbeing and positive social interaction with followers. The report could likewise be used in schools as an educational tool, modelling athletes as the people to learn off with their social media

A study that considered how emotionally abusive behavior is used in sports and the negative results it has on the coach and athlete relationship. In this study emotional abuse was defined as a pattern of non-contact deliberate behaviors by a person within a critical relationship role ending in a potential to be harmful to an individual’s emotional state. This emotionally behavior is manifested in two main forms, expressive and instrumental. Expressive origins of emotional abuse refer yelling demeaning comments at an athlete out of anger or frustration. Instrumental origins of emotional abuse refer to emotionally abusive behaviors that are used to achieve a desired end (Stirling, 2013).
Social media is something that has quickly became a huge part of our global culture. It has taken over the sports world, with most athletes, and all sports organizations having their own official accounts across the wide variety of social media sites. As a result, the governing bodies of all the professional sports leagues in North America have had to make policies that define what behaviors are unacceptable for their athletes and teams to do on their social media accounts. Many of the policies developed by the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL are understandable, as it is clearly in the best interest of the respective leagues. Banning social media use during games is an obvious one. However, some of the rules made by the leagues go too far. These policies
...ing violent crimes today, reaching from drug abuse, and stress to deep psychological issues , and although many sports organizations are setting up workshops an counselors to talk to the athletes about drug abuse and domestic violence issues, the responsibility lies within the athlete themselves to make a change for the better and get rid of the negative perceptions associated with today's athletes .
In conclusion, both producers and consumers of media deserve some responsibility in how social media and magazines have impacted people and the way they perceive themselves. The changes that these two types of media bring upon people can be both beneficial as well as detrimental. In order to live happy and fulfilling lives, people must know that creators of social media and magazines intents were for them to be good and helpful and that not everything that is shared and shown in the media is real. Therefore, the blame of negativity doesn’t solely lie on the producers of the media; it is also in the hands of the people, the consumers. As magazines and social networks become more prevalent in today’s society, images and information are constantly being shared while people will continue to evolve.

Coaches and athletes should discuss the choices that the athletes make while using social media networks instead of completely banning them. Another way to approach this issue would be to stress for the players to keep their social media accounts under control. Prohibiting the use of social media due to harmful actions is also prohibiting all communications that would be made that are unrelated to the college/university.
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though

Sport is never far from controversy. Whether it be alcohol-fuelled misbehaviour, allegations of drug abuse or inappropriate public musings on a thorny political issue, the national press is filled to the brim with sports stars dragging the image of their employers — and the sports they represent — through the proverbial mud.
It is no secret that social media has become a part of our everyday lives. This is a society where you are judged by how many Instragram likes your photos can get or how many followers you have on Twitter. Not only have social media become a part of our lives, it has changed the way. Whether it be lack of conversation at the dinner table or voicing our opinion on Twitter, there is no denying that social media is here to stay. While my fellow Rider students and I may be spending too much checking social media sites, it most certainly keeps us in touch with the Rider community.
what form of media consumers choose to follow along with a particular sporting event. This will be helpful as sports marketers continue to compete against other sports marketers as well as other forms of entertainment across multiple media channels. This could also be used in conjunction with a revised or modified Television Viewing Motives Scale (or TVMS) that places a particular emphasis on the use of social media and how it impacts the television viewing of sports fans. Nevertheless, watching live televised sporting events is an important aspect of being a sports fan, and as a result, future research needs to study how social media has impacted television-viewing habits. Furthermore, it may be beneficial to examine the applicability of some
Sports are apart of human society, for centuries it has been difficult to conceive of any human civilization consisting entirely of work, education, relationships, and entertainment alone.
