In the essay titled “What is Happiness?” author John Ciardi deals with the interminable task of defining happiness. He discusses the true meaning of happiness and how many Americans rely on material things for happiness. He highlights how commercials and advertising contribute to our unhappiness when we are unable to satisfy the desires these commercials create. He points out that there is no fixed definition of happiness and it varies from person to person. Ciardi uses location to demonstrate the variation in how people define happiness. He tells us that westerners are under the illusion that happiness can be bought. Easterners perceive happiness as achieving perfection. However people may define happiness, Ciardi claims the real goal is the
pursuit of happiness not just happiness on it’s own. He states that,“ happiness is neither in having nor being but in becoming. ”Ciardi emphasizes that it means much more to strive to accomplish our own happiness rather than easily accomplishing it. Ciardi uses indirect characterization to express several definitions of happiness in order to convince Americans that it takes effort to attain happiness.
In contrast to Aristotle, Roko Belic’s documentary “Happy” provides a fresh perspective that takes place far more recently. The film sets out to similar goals of Aristotle in defining the nature of happiness and exploring what makes different people happy in general. Contrary to belief, genuine happiness is very rarely found at the bottom of a shopping basket or on the leather seats of a brand new car. Often we hear the cliché saying “Money can’t buy happiness” but this is in fact true. Whilst the elation and delight brought from finally owning a wanted item is extraordinary, you must remind yourself that your happiness should not become dependant upon your ownership of this item. But in this debate, one question still raises its head - What is happiness? Happiness is not actually leading a luxurious life, but the luxury of living a life. Happiness is not actually about expanding your business, but it lies in expanding the horizons of life. Happiness is not having a meal in the most famous restaurant, but having it with your most beloved family. It does not lie in attending honorable parties, but to attend a party with honor.
