In the poem Happiness by Jane Kenyon, the main idea is that happiness comes in many forms to our lives and it is very difficult to see it, rather we need to experience it. The poet also conveys to treasure the happiness in our lives, even if it occurs in its miniature forms. Happiness is an emotion that is unique to an individual, rather than an event. Additionally, the poet tries to point out that happiness comes to everyone and everything – even though we are not aware of it. The poet effectively utilizes the parable of return of the prodigal son to explain what happiness is, then suddenly takes a turn to claim “happiness is the uncle that you never knew about.” Now the scene is set with the uncle arriving in his plane and to find you “asleep
midafternoon during the unmerciful hours of your despair.” After this, the poem becomes more ubiquitous, when happiness comes to the “monk in his cell, to the woman sweeping the street, to the child whose mother had passed out from drink, to the lover, to the dog chewing a sock, to the pusher, to the basket maker and to the clerk stacking cans of carrots in the night”– which are examples that it comes to anyone unexpectedly. Then, it concludes with a striking visual image of the rain falling on the open sea, that is actually personifying the rain; and lastly, happiness arrives to the non-living object - the wine glass by the weariness of holding wine. Next, The Mower by Philip Larkin is specifies a message which is that we should be kind to everyone while there is still time. This could be interpreted as a reference to life, as we don’t know when people will die and so that we should be kind to them. Here, in the poem, the poet accidently killed a hedgehog by his mower, that he had found to be jammed up against the blades. So, at first the poet is filled up with guilt, but then he felt sympathetic. Another message that the poet conveys is ‘karma’, where the sum of the actions of an individual in the present life can affect the fate during their next lives. So, good deeds contributes to happiness and bad deeds contributes to pain and sufferings.
In the essay Why Happiness, Why Now? Sara Ahmed talks about how one’s goal in life is to find happiness. Ahmed begins her essay with skepticism and her disbeliefs in happiness. She shows her interest in how happiness is linked to a person’s life choices. Ahmed also tries to dig deeper, and instead of asking an unanswerable question, “what is Happiness?” she asks questions about the role of happiness in one’s life.
There is a old time saying that “you will never know what true happiness feels like until you have felt pain”. In order to reach where you are going in life you have to go through hardship and pain to find your inner contentment. Often times, people who have too much in life always takes it for granted ,because all they have is pleasure and not knowing the feelings of pain and being without. Martha C. Nussbaum author of “who is the happy warrior” states that you have to go through pain to find the true meaning of happiness while Daniel M.Haybron author of “Happiness and Its Discontents” states that pain doesn 't bring happiness, happiness is just a thing you feel when you think you may have enough. To find happiness you have to go through the unbearable process of life.
Happiness, the state of being happy; it is a part of natural human emotion. Happiness is sought out by everyone, as it is one of the most fundamental values of life. It can be as small as going back home after school or as big as winning a lottery. My personal definition of happiness is the simplest things such as spending time with my friends, getting a little break in between studying, listening to my favorite songs, or getting a good mark on a quiz or a test. Similarly, the individuals in the texts had pursued or wanted to pursue happiness through simplest things in life. In the poem “Swing Valley” the writer is reminiscing about the time when him and his friends experienced joy by carelessly swinging on a rope enjoying the momentary release from the gravity. Secondly, the individual from the short story “Home Place” by Guy Vanderhaeghe, also reminisces about his happiness he pursued in his youth and
People push being happy on society as a total must in life; sadness is not an option. However, the research that has conducted to the study of happiness speaks otherwise. In this essay Sharon Begley's article "Happiness: Enough Already" critiques and analyzes societies need to be happy and the motivational affects it has on life. Begley believes that individuals do not always have to be happy, and being sad is okay and even good for us. She brings in the research of other professionals to build her claim that extreme constant happiness is not good for people. I strongly agree that we need to experience sadness to build motivation in life and character all around.
Are you more of a glass half-empty type of person or a glass half-full? In the essay “Happiness is a glass half empty” writer Oliver Burkeman would say he is a glass half empty type of person. In his essay he writes, “Be positive, look on the bright side, stay focused on success: so goes our modern mantra. But perhaps the true path to contentment is to learn to be a loser” (Burkeman). I think what he means in this statement is people nowadays are taught to always look on the brighter side of life. When in actuality people should be looking on the negative side of life to realize how great their lives really are. In this essay writer Oliver Burkeman uses rhetorical devices such ethos, pathos, and logos to prove that maybe being negative
Thomas Szasz states in his writing that “ happiness is an imaginary condition, formerly often attributed to the living to the dead, now attributed by adults to children and children to adults.” I do not agree that happiness is an imaginary state of mind.
A life filled with purpose brings happiness. My definition of happiness is a life that has a drive to succeed and a drive to be happy. This drive or purpose can come from several aspects of one's life, such as careers, hobbies, and relationships. Mandel's Station Eleven portrays this well through the character of Jeevan Chuadhery. Within the first ten pages of the book, Jeevan encounters a life changing moment that reveals what he wants to do in his life. Jeevan also dwells on many memories of him and his brother of the pre-disaster world of the book. His career and family are the main sources of his happiness. Jeevan and I both have the same source of happiness, which comes from fulfilling our purpose in life and family.
In Atwood's "Happy Endings", story A, John and Marry fall in love, get married, have several "stimulating and challenging" activities and then they die. Then the story continues with several different variations of this basic love story plot, however, a twist is added to each one. In Story B, Marry loves John, but John does not love her. John is in love with Madge. Mary then tries to kill herself to get Johns attention, but he does not notice, and she dies. In the end, John and Madge get married and live like the first story. Story C begins will John (who is older) loves Mary and Mary loves James (who is a young free spirit). John is married to Madge in this one, so he can only get together with Mary on Thursday's...and they do. One day, John walks in on Mary and James high and in bed. John's response is shooting them then himself. Madge then finds a respectable man and they live the rest of their life like A. In D, Madge and Fred have all of A, however, their house is hit by a tidal wave they survive and then continue with A. In E, Fred has a bad heart, dies and Madge does charity until the end of A. In F, Atwood leaves more to your mind and your own interest.
There are multiple feelings, moods, and senses that people use every day. Two of the primary feelings used is
The author Ray Bradbury really focuses the book on this idea of happiness he's created. The societies happiness is portrayed in an idea of living with a sitcom family, and dreams of adding on various walls sized televisions. People in this society do not have their own thoughts or do not express emotion. True happiness comes from acceptance of the situation and living life so you matter, make a difference and change the world somehow.
In the article, "But Will It Make You Happy," Stepahnie Rosenblum shows us how to be happy with less money spent and more purchasing an experience. people spent their money to find happiness, but they do not realize that the experiences had more value of material objects. I agree with the author that experiences give people more satisfaction than spending money on materials as well small things bring more happiness.
Death is inevitable; if you want happiness in life, try A. Margaret Atwood, the author of “Happy Endings,” uses six separate short stories to depict outcomes with different scenarios. The author practices the use of flash fiction which adds to the entirety of each version. Though this short story has portions of unusual context, the content can teach a reflection on life. As the reader analyzes all six versions, the gender roles are evident as the story progresses. Atwood starts the short story by introducing the two main characters, John and Mary, and then proceeds to tell a variety of options as to who they are and what happens to them. In Margaret Atwood’s short story, “Happy Endings,” the central theme of fiction provides several different

But in this debate, one question still raises its head - What is happiness? Happiness is not actually leading a luxurious life, but the luxury of living a life. Happiness is not actually about expanding your business, but it lies in expanding the horizons of life. Happiness is not having a meal in the most famous restaurant, but having it with your most beloved family. It does not lie in attending honorable parties, but to attend a party with honor.
I believe that happiness is the key to living a good and prosperous life. Through all of the sadness and hate in the world, happiness gives me hope. It gives not only me, but others hope and joy. Happiness gives us something to hold onto, therefore we cherish it as much as we can.
