Stephen Paddock Motive There is little information right now, even still, after the mass shooting in Las Vegas. An older man named Stephen Paddock fired into a large crowd of people attending a country music concert on October 1, 2017. 58 people enjoying a concert on a Sunday evening lost their lives and hundreds more were injured. Nearly a month later and authorities are still at a loss when it comes to finding Stephen Paddock’s motive for this mass shooting. However, there are many theories circulating. I personally feel Stephen Paddock was an isolated man who had a warped view on the community, and one day decided something needed to change and he was going to plan a way to do it. In many articles it is said that Paddock was an isolated …show more content…
With no known political or religious affiliation one can rule out any political or religious motives. With the meticulous planning and months of thought, weapon buying, and scouting one can rule out a spontaneous gambling loss. With a loving girlfriend one can rule out the “cheating spouse” motive. The only thing that makes sense to me personally is that Stephen Paddock was an isolated man who saw the world changing around him and did not like those changes. With the President of the United States changing health care policies, changing taxation laws, with the up rise of blatant racism, protests in the streets, maybe Paddock saw a large shooting as a way to gain attention on problems in society at hand. Maybe Stephen Paddock took to shooting into a large crowd of people because he could not see an out to the problems at hand and he was frustrated and took advantage of a large venue with thousands of people to take his stand. He sent his girlfriend away so she would not interfere or be injured in any possible way. He kept his plan quiet and under wraps so no one in his immediate circle of friends and family would be threatened by his plan. After spending his whole life isolated from others, and living in his father’s shadow, maybe this was the only out he saw to change the world, even if it only changed
October 2002 was the beginning of what seemed like the longest three weeks in the Washington Metropolitan Area. No one wanted to believe that what was happening would change the lives of thousands. What appeared to be a random killing spree by an enraged lunatic, turned out to be part of a massive plan that claimed the lives of ten innocent people in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. When these shootings first began, they were believed to be linked to a white van or truck. It was later discovered that these shootings were being carried out by a man named John Allen Muhammad, and his teenage accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo, in a blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice sedan.

Introduction The exponential growth of gangs in the Northern Triangle countries (Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras) has led to an epidemic of violence across the region. The two largest and most formidable gangs in the Northern Triangle, the Mara Salvatrucha-13 (MS-13) and the Barrio 18, wage battles against one another to control territory and defend against incursions. In 2011, Honduras led the world in homicides, with 91.6 per 100,000 people; rates were also alarmingly high in El Salvador and Guatemala, at 69.1 and 38.5 per 100,000 people, respectively. In El Salvador, a country with a population of only 6.2 million people, 4,354 were the victims of homicide in 2011 alone, with the Catholic Church estimating that more than 1,300 of these deaths were the direct result of gang violence. To counteract the growth of the gang phenomenon, during the 2000s the Northern Triangle countries favored a mano dura (iron fist) approach to dealing with the increasing belligerence of gangs.
He also theorized that Adam shot his mother four times for each of them; himself, his mother, his father, and his brother. After the tragedy, the school was torn down and many gun-control debates heated up and schools greatly improved their security to prevent any more potential attacks. To this day, the motive of Adam Lanza, is still unknown, but the effects are still felt in the world today. When looking into the reasons that would cause a twenty year old young man to commit such a horrific act, the mental health of the shooter is nearly always the first thing to look at. Adam Lanza was indeed found to have suffered from multiple mental disorders, however there is no direct connection between Lanza's mental health and his decision to commit mass murder.
Imagine yourself going out to a neighborhood party trying to relax after a stressful week. You might want to socialize, drink, or watch television. Now try to think about the penalties that can occur when the party gets out of control such as loud outbursts, fighting, and physical behavior. Depending on the setting of the party, there could be a possible chance of violence happening. In this case, the violent actions can result to homicides, shootings, and suicides. Homicides can vary based on age, gender, race, and methods of killing the victim. Shootings are quick reactions to dealing with victim. Suicides result to choosing to kill one’s life. Overall, there are different reasons to why individuals feel the need to kill someone else. It
The authors state their stance on the issue that mental illness has very little to do with gun violence. Throughout the article the authors use information from other sources such as PsycINFO and PsychiatryOnline and their findings from their own study in order to support their position. They state four claims that followed by their own investigation they did by collecting data and information from previous research that addresses connections between gun violence and mental illness. Metzel gives examples of mass shootings that happened in America that shows if the shooter to had some sort of mental health issues. One of the examples is the recent school shooting, Sandy Hook Elementary, caused a big debate about gun control and if people should have screenings for any mental health problems. The authors later say that the screenings would not reduce the chance of having another mass shooting later on and would add a lot of pressure to therapists. What caused a big issue was that the media diagnosing the shooter due to this many questions arise if the media has been using mental illness as a scapegoat since majority of the mass shooters tend to be white men and if race also played a role in this issue. This has misdirected people on the bigger issues on what we can
Summary: Adam Goldman’s NY Times Article, “Texas Church Shooting…”, published in Nov. 8 2017, describes what allowed the gunmen to cause so much damage. One of the main reasons described is “ the Air Force admitted on Monday that it had failed to forward information about him to the national database” which is why he was able to purchase weapons even though he had been convicted of domestic abuse. The shooter also spent time in a psychiatric hospital when he was serving in the air force. He was a “high risk patient” with “girlfriend issues” who was flaunting his purchase of multiple weapons. In 2015, the shooter tried to get a license to carry a handgun but was unsuccessful because of previous animal cruelty charges.
The United States will not soon forget the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut that came just two weeks before Christmas last year. This tragic event resulted in the death of twenty students and eight adults. Although the event shocked the nation, rampage shootings are nothing new. Over the years, many families have lost loved ones to these horrific events. As a result, these mass shootings such as the one that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary caught public attention leading to a push to find the cause of these events. Out of this research a variety of possible causes came to light consisting of arguments stating that high school bullying, availability of guns, mental illness, violent movies and video games are the cause of mass shootings. However, these researchers and debaters tend to ignore the role of massive media coverage in the increase of copycat shootings in the United States.
As the world recovers from recent school shootings, people wondered why these events have occurred. They are focused on drug use, violent society, video games, bullying, and mental issues to try and explain an unexplainable event. The idea that a person would shoot others for little or no reason gave little relief to the survivors.
Although no one can be entirely sure what motivates teens to commit mass shootings, there are theories that must be examined to develop solutions. One theory states that there are ten factors that contribute to the likelihood of a teen committing murder. These factors include an unstable home life, being bullied at school, obsession with violent entertainment, being suicidal, involvement with drugs or alcohol, involvement with gangs or cults, and mental illness. Usually at least four of these qualities are present in homicidal teens (Khadaroo). While many of these causes stem from home lif...
A gunman fired into a crowd of people at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival on Sunday, October 1st, 2017 on the Las Vegas strip, killing 58 people and injuring more than 500 people. The Las Vegas shooting, one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history could possibly be an act of terrorism.
They suggested that not only mental illness but other factors such as social relationships, firearm access during emotional moments etc also lead to gun violence. However, they failed to cite this with strong facts, numbers etc. Reports suggest that up to 60% of executioners of mass shootings in the United States since 1970 displayed symptoms including acute paranoia, delusions, and depression before committing their crimes[4,5]. In another article “Rates of Household Firearm Ownership and Homicide Across US Regions and States, 1988–1997”[6], the authors emphasized on the “association between rates of household firearm ownership and homicide across the United States, by age group”. In this analysis, they failed to take gender, mental health and other factors into consideration which helps more to analyze that which type of people (mentally ill) and/ or which gender are doing these cruel
