Ian Lancaster Fleming was born on 28th of May 1908 in Mayfair, London. He was the son of Valentine Fleming and Evelyn St Croix Rose. Valentine was a barrister and Member of Parliament and the son of Robert Fleming who was an extremely wealthy Scottish merchant banker. Evelyn was the daughter of a wealthy London solicitor. At the start of the First World War, Valentine joined the army and quickly rose to the rank of Major. He was killed by German shelling in France on the Western Front on 20th May 1917. Evelyn inherited her husband's estate on his death but in his will, Valentine set a clause that if Evelyn should re-marry, she would lose the estate. She was effectively forever marred to Valentine. Ian also had three brothers, Peter (1907-1971), Michael (1913-1940) and Richard (1911-1977).He also had a maternal half sister, Amaryllis (1925-1999) who was conceived during a long-term affair with the post-impressionist artist Augustus John some six years after Valentines' death. Ian attended Durnford prep school in Dorset in 1914; he did not enjoy his time here as he was subject to bullying, terrible food and physical hardship. Fleming attended Eton College at the age of thirteen and although he was not academically gifted he excelled in the field of athletics. He received and defended his title as Victor Ludorum between 1925 and 1927. During his time at Eton, he edited the Wyvern which was the school newspaper at the time. He did not fare well at Eton, and his mother removed him a term early on the advice of his housemaster E.V. Slater to attend a crammer course to gain entry into Sandhurst Royal Military College. He was accepted into Sandhurst but did complete his training and left without an officer's commission. At the age of nineteen, at the command of his mother, Fleming was set to Tennerhof School in Kitzbühel, Austria in order to prepare for an opportunity to

He entered the school in the autumn of 1921. His older brother, Peter, was doing very well academically but Ian would not be able to follow in his footsteps. Fleming knew that he was not the brightest crayon in the box so he turned his focus onto other things that would get peoples attention such as his appearance, wearing very heavily scented hair oil, not following the school rules, showing off how good he was at sports and he became a womanizer (British Writers.) In 1925 and 1926 Fleming was awarded the title “Victor Ludorum,” because of his accomplishments of in track and field events. Although he did have an interest in literature, Fleming rarely studied or even cared about his classes at Eton so his mother withdrew him from the academic classes and enrolled him into Eton’s Army Class Division. She was hoping that with this change he would be able to pass the entry exam and then go on and gain admission into the Royal Military College. He ended up ranking eleven out of one hundred students who took the exam. Before he went off to school he was enrolled at a school in Kitzbuhel, and experimental school to help kids find their way, so the Fleming could find himself (British Writers 84.) On the third of September in 1926 Fleming began his eighteen month long training course to become an officer. In training he excelled in the physical aspect but he

In 1798, his grandfather died, which gave him his title and his estate. He later attended Trinity College at Cambridge University and earned his master’s degree in July of 1808 (“Lord”). Aside from his schooling he was an excellent marksman, horseman, and swimmer (Gurney 72). Many thought he was “mad- bad- and dangerous to know” (Napierkowski 38). His personality was very out of the realm of normal for the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in which he lived. He isolated himself from others’ opinions about his cruel, sexual eccentric...

Scott Fitzgerald's writing was enormously inspired by the loss of his three sisters, his relationships with Zelda Sayre, and his ability to separate the world and his work. The first years of Scott's life were colored by grief and loss. The Fitzgerald family was in deep mourning the afternoon that Scott was born, due to the loss of Mollie and Edward Fitzgerald's two daughters that both died from an illness almost three months before Mollie gave birth to Scott. “Although his mother never spoke of the deaths of her first two children, Scott claimed he felt the effects” (Boon 13). Fitzgerald associated the tragedy of his sisters with his career as a writer. A little more than three years later, another sister was born into the family, but only lived one hour. The deaths of his sisters heavily affected his life as a child and an adult. Fitzgera...

The story takes place in the late 1980’s at an imaginary elite public school called Bredgar Chambers and is situated in the South of England. It becomes apparent that it is an elite public school, as the boys are interviewed they tell Thomas Lenley, the detective inspector, that they wouldn’t have been at the school if their parents hadn’t forced them “We’re here because our parents sent us. Matt was no different” which also describes their attitude towards the school.
