A gunman fired into a crowd of people at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival on Sunday, October 1st, 2017 on the Las Vegas strip, killing 58 people and injuring more than 500 people. The Las Vegas shooting, one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history could possibly be an act of terrorism.
The shooter, Stephen Paddox was 64 years old, twice divorced with no kids. He was a retired accountant who lived in Mesquite, Nevada with his girlfriend, 62-year-old Marilou Danley. Paddox graduated from California State, Northridge in 1977 with a degree in business administration. According to his brother, Eric Paddox, he was a successful real estate investor and showed no signs of violence. On September 28th, 2017 Paddox rents a high-rise room on the 32nd floor at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino not far from the Las Vegas strip where the country concert was being held. Over the course of about 1 year he purchased 33 firearms. He also bought 1,000 rounds of tracers ammunition a month before. He sets up 23 weapons throughout his hotel room as well as cameras. As Paddox lashes out on the crowd of people at the festival they began to run and take cover.
This led to 58 deaths and nearly 500 injured. Once law enforcement officials figured out where the shots were coming from they immediately took action into finding exactly where and who was behind this terrible act. When the police and swat team got there, they found a security guard injured and Paddox dead in his hotel room from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement officials stated that investigators believe that the note found on the nightstand in Paddox room contained numbers to help calculate more precise shots. Investigators are still working to determine why Paddox committed this
crime. Researching this story brings me to believe that Stephen Paddox mass shooting was an act of terrorism. If anyone in this country threatens to kill someone just out of anger in the heat of the moment will be arrested and charged with terroristic threat. Paddox opened fire on 22,000 people at a country music festival killing 58 people and injuring over 500 and officials say it wasn’t an act of terrorism. That’s exactly what it was in my opinion, an act of terrorism. Terrorism actual or threatened use of violence, directed by groups or individuals against noncombatants, to achieve political ends through intimidation. “Terrorism.” Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, 2016, p. 1p. 1. It arouses considerable emotions that are associated with public reactions to attacks and events. Emotions like hatred, humiliation, fear, jealousy and anger. It’s unfortunate when you think that you’re waking up to a beautiful day that’s planned around a certain event and you get there not knowing that moment will be your last moment on earth. Innocent people lives were taken away by Stephen Paddox. People lost wives, mothers, husbands, sisters, aunts, brothers, dads, uncles, grandmothers, grandfathers, and friends. Unfortunately, our community’s lost officers, teachers, doctors, military veterans, and so many more. Families traveled to place crosses and flowers for the lives lost in Las Vegas. Many organizations, celebrities, and companies have donated money to the families that were involved, even blood donations. May all the lives lost rest in peace.
"Columbine High School Shootings." History.com. A&E Television Networks, n.d. Web. 08 Sept. 2015. Eighteen year old Eric Harris and seventeen year old Dylan Klebold were two boys with a fascination of violent video games and music. These young men were known to be “goth” and were bullied all throughout their high school careers because of their different interest. In 1999, on April 20th these boys went into their high school with mixed emotions and a devious plan to get revenge. The two teens went into the high school with handguns and killed both students and faculty members, before they turned the guns around on themselves. This is a reliable source because it informed us of both previous emotion, and the aftermath of the tragedy with detail about the boys, the school and the lives affected. This source was relevant for me because of how thoroughly it described the shooting, and gave me background information as to why and how it happened.

Mass shootings have become a common occurrence in the United States society and have brought our society's safety debate to the attention of American politics. Both sides of the debate agree that we need more safety precautions but neither side can officially agree on what is to be done. What can we do about the raging number of mass shootings? There is no definite solution for mass shootings but there are precautions the United States can take to try to overcome the overwhelming number of mass shootings occurring. Gun Control is a major topic in the debate of how we can keep our society safer but how is what remains a mystery but we can start with altering the second amendment, and having stronger gun laws and background checks.
“That could never happen in my school.” This is one of the first thoughts that goes through a students mind when they hear about a school shooting. The fact is though, it can. School shootings can happen at any school at any time. Lack of security is only a small part of the problem. The major issue lies in the low morality of students and warning signs overlooked by administration.
With the media shining so much light upon this topic, it is evident that mass murders in the United States of America are more frequent and deadly. In fact, studies have found that the USA has more mass public shootings than any other country (Christensen). These numbers have only been increasing in the past decades. This is shocking because the USA holds only 5 percent of the world’s population, but as a nation, contributes to 31 percent of mass murders (Christensen). Although these murders continue to be a rare phenomenon, weak gun laws, the need for fame, and issues with societal views are the main causes of the increase in cases.
The television comes on everyone puts their hand to their mouth in shock. Another mass killing has happened. As a nation we feel this is happening more than it used to, but how much is it really happening? The images of Newtown, Aurora and Virginia Tech are burned into the minds of Americans. Since 2006, there has been more than 200 mass killings in America (Overburg). Newtown, Aurora and Virginia Tech capture the nations attention, but similar bloody scenes happen with alarming frequency and much less scrutiny (Overburg). The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) qualify a mass killing as the death of four people or more. With gun control and mental illness becoming a large topic due to these mass killings USA Today set out to find out who commits these killings, the weapons they use and the forces that motivates them. USA Today examined FBI and local police data and found that mass killings in America happen far more often than the government reports. Also the circumstances surrounding the killings are far more particular than most people think.
