In June of 2016, the deadliest mass shooting in the United States happens at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. In the aftermath of Sunday morning when covering the shooting, News 13 a local news channel from Orlando used pathos in their news to create fear about terrorism to the audience. On the other hand, The New York Times used eyewitness videos and expert interviews to appeal logic.
During the covering of the shooting, News 13 was on its sadly well-honed tragedy TV cruise control, correspondents doing stand-ups behind yellow police tape, grieving families, local politicians, witnesses of the aftermath and lots of speculation about the killer’s motivation for doing this. Still based on these calls and their own speculations, News 13 start creating a fear of terrorism to their audience without acknowledging about the sexual orientation of the victims of this massacre. According to Hyman, Ira, psychologist professor of the Western Washington University, said “the people that focused on terrorism rarely say anything about the sexual orientation of the victims of this massacre.” Most of the victims at Pulse were LGBT individuals in a gay nightclub; primarily young, gay, and Hispanic men. News 13 focused on terrorism and forgot about the other possible reasons for his actions. There was no point during the coverage where they seemed comfortable exploring in depth the motivation of homophobia or the history of violence he had. The survivors told the Times that they were calling 911 and posting on their social media pleading for help. Even the club posted a stark message on its Facebook page “Everyone get out of pulse and keep running.” Eyewitness also recorded videos and took photos of what was happening inside the nightclub and posted them on their social media. The New York Time posted some of these videos on their articles. These videos and images started trending on Facebook and other social media platforms, showing how other people show their support for the victims at Pulse and the LGBT community.
