Identity and belonging as they are known in the contemporary society are largely defined by cultural and ethnic background. The major difference that exists between societies and communities around the world is cultural based. Culture encapsulates the way of life and perspectives that a given group subscribes to. It includes values, thought processes, behaviors, and symbols that hold a common meaning to a group and which are passed from one generation to another through imitation and communication. The focus of this essay is analyzing the various dynamics of culture as defined by Arlene Dávila in her book Sponsored Identities and how symbols and cultures can be shifted from the perspective of "cultural symbols" were used by the residents of Vieques.

It will be argued as well that the influence of modern society does not necessarily lead to a loss of cultural soundness itself, but rather that a presence of certain cultural practices within the respective cultures has attributed to the lasting “purity” of certain cultures.
