Identity and belonging as they are known in the contemporary society are largely defined by cultural and ethnic background. The major difference that exists between societies and communities around the world is cultural based. Culture encapsulates the way of life and perspectives that a given group subscribes to. It includes values, thought processes, behaviors, and symbols that hold a common meaning to a group and which are passed from one generation to another through imitation and communication.
